http://www.bit-tech.net/gaming/2006/...ands_On/1.htmlBit-Tech recently got their hands on the Wii, and as we get closer to the release date and see more and more footage, the hype grows a little worn and the realistic among us grow ever doubtful.
What I do want to do is provide a little realism. Too many journalists are giving out the impression that the Wii will provide an unbelievable, unique experience unlike anything you will have ever played before. That the Wii remote allows for completely dynamic gameplay that will revolutionise the gaming world. These facts are half-truths, based most probably on people spending a small amount of time with the console at a booth at one of the big conventions. When you get down to the nitty gritty of the Wii you find something a bit different from the 360 and PS3, but not drastically as you may have thought/hoped.They played a handful of games in a controlled environment and faithfully recorded their impressions, included embarrassing photography. When it comes down to it, will the Wii be, as their comparison goes, an occasional party game as opposed to a serious system? And if so, will it matter? Eliza Gauger
Well I am not impressed with Wii so far but I will save my judgement for my hands on time with WIi later this year.

I am a big advocate of the theory that the DS and the Wii are about as far apart as can be in terms of their possible impact. Too many times people give the wii a write off as a possible huge success just because of the DS. That being said, I do believe that this is one of those instances where the two can be compared.
The DS launch lineup was gimicky at best, most titles were not a great fit for the system. Most people felt that the touch screen/mic were not an addition to gameplay, that changed over time when people began to see true proof of concept games (and the industry has now begun to use many features in excellent ways). I will admit that I have not played the Wii as much as I would like, i've had experience with many of the games but it hasnt been as concentrated as it could be. I will say though that as not really a nintendo fan persay, I was doubtful, until I played Mario Galaxy. Galaxy (much like mario 64) just sold the concept of the controller to me, it was intuitive, im not even going to try to describe it because (to me) it was perfect. And that's all I needed to see/play to realize that this console has potential to be a huge jump forward in gameplay.
I dont feel that there is a launch title anywhere near as good as galaxy as far as "proof of concept" material. And I would agree (along with most of the industry) that most of these launch games are not huge gameplay achievements. However I am sold on the potential of the console.
Just my opinion, take it for what you will.I miss my dreamcast.

I knew this was a bad idea right from the start. It was either going to pay off well of totally screw them up. The Wiimote is good and all (original) but i think it would be hard to really play a game for hours on end. It's just too different from the stardard controller and i don't think most people are ready for it.

For a console release, the Wii's gimmick is pretty cool, but too many people overhyped it. I do think that after a while, the concept will wear itself out and lose appeal, save for a few titles.
The same, I suppose, could be said for the DS, but I think its gimmick has a much better life-span. And it won't feel like a chore after a while of prolonged playing ((unless you've been busting your ass for hours in, say, Trauma Center... <3)).
All that I've typed could just be a basic repeat of what everyone else has said, but I didn't read the other posts yet. Sorry, guys. XD

come on now, you can only swing/aim/tilt/etc for so long until you get tired of it. i admit, i was really hyped about the system at first but its beginning to die down. i wonder how this is going to work in the little room i have.
Microsoft spokesperson:"Yes, it is true. As part of our standard and ongoing process of analyzing repair data, we recently noticed a higher than usual number of units (360s) coming in for repair."

Here we go, one site gives their impressions that aren't favourable, and suddenly everybody is like, "I knew it was a big mistake" etc. Like lemmings, if the reviews had been raving and posiive, I'm sure you'd all agree with those too and give Nintendo some credit

I happen to think that the DS is a mixed bag, just like Wii could be. Very few games make truly innovative use of the touch screen. Plenty just use it for the sake of it, and the rest are just normal games. How long is it going to be before the novelty of swinging the Wii-mote around wears off? It has potential I'll give it that, but a golf game is a golf game...
Having said that, how about waiting until we get our hands on the real thing before passing judgement?Phat boy gone slim!

I do not often double post on the same topic to emphasize my point but:
To anyone who doubts the potential of the wii for deep, fun, intuitive and innovative gameplay needs only to play Mario Galaxy.
The jury is still out as to whether there will be a vast amount of games that can transcend the mediocrity of gimicky shallow controls. But the potential is there, and I guess that's all you really ever buy at launch, potential.I miss my dreamcast.

There is no doubting that Wii will have several killer apps up its sleeve, and there is also no doubting its potential. It's just a case of how how much the "fun" can last. When I got my DS, the first two games I played that involved using the stylus as the primary input were superb. Now, even though the games might be different, using the stylus and touch screen is no longer innovative or fun - it's just a means of control, and once you get over that, the games are really not much different.

To CX1 and Graham, I'll wait and see, but as I've stated before the graphical abilities of the majority of the third party games are below sub par and from MY experince no where near as fun as the first party games as well...
If you recall the Cubes top games were almost ALL Nintendo and a select few third party, which severely hurt it...(lack of third party) Perhaps the DS factor WILL come to pass for the Wii...
I agree nobody should count the Wii out yet, but giving it undeserved credit (remember its NOT OUT YET) is also foolish. I say wait for all the next gen systems to hit, before you crown a victor and pick a loser

Of course the first games won't be the kind of steps forward as everyone would like them to be. Just like with PS3's hardware, it takes time for the developers to realize all the possibilities of the controller and how to make things work with it perfectly. Of course there are some launch (window) games that do it better (Twilight Princess, Super Mario Galaxy, Trauma Center) and some that do it worse (Splinter Cell, crappy licence games etc.) Just like with PS3, there are some things that make it easier, but, by the end of the day, the best results won't be delivered using middleware etc., but developers taking the controllers possibilities into their own hands.

I'm not a nintendo fanboy (I find myself saying I'm not a fanboy of this or that a lot on these forums or someone will attack me and call me such, strange huh?), but I don't put much stock in any 'journalist' who can't properly spell

Not saying I'm a frickin' master at the ol english language, but I'm not being paid for my jibba jabba.

Surely the name of this thread is a little extreme, how does one bad review mean that people are getting less enthusiastic about it. Infact i just read a really positive review about the wii-mote on ign, where the reviewer had tested it for a couple of hours and found it to still be incredibly fun, and didn't get tired by the moving about either.
If you would be a real seeker after truth, it is necessary that at least once in your life you doubt, as far as possible, all things.

It seems like some of you guys in here FEED on negativity....
One occasional not so good article about Wii and you all come flooding in here to bury it. Whats wrong with you people? What about the other 95% of positive articles about the Wii? Im inclined to go with the majority opinion and the vast majority have great things to say about it. Remember what you're reading is one mans opinion...
Dont take what he says as the definitive truth. Wait until you get a chance to try it for yourselves and make your own opinon.

What the man says is half truth. I agree with some of the points he makes, its not like the Wii's controller will stay as suberb fun, most likely it will be a burden later on in some games.
It can be alot of fun, who knows, lets wait and see but I wouldn't bet my money on Wiimote being suberbly fun after the excitement wears off.

Still eager here, sure the article does not do any favours for the Wii, how many articles are posted with negitive sentiments concernhing the 360 or PS3?
Just as Graham has said, how about waiting until we get our hands on the real thing before passing judgement?

i think by this time next year we will be able to tell if the wii is just for casual games or serious ones.
it is alright to play games in short bursts like nintendo mentions but i would be pretty mad if i paid $50 for a game i get tired of after a couple of weeks.
