PS3 and Your Home Security [Old Thread]

Given the outlandish costs that we may see on second hand PS3 sales early on (e-bay or not) has anyone given any consideration to the fact that a $1000-2000+! small box will make a very tempting target for any would be burglers.

HDTV and home cinema system added to that makes another sweet incentive.

What steps are people taking to ensure they dont become victims of crime because of their PS3's. Will you keep it a bit quiet that you have one? Dont keep it on view? keep it upstairs?

Alarm system, a dog, and a slew of firearms keep me worry free. We will see more people trying to grab and run PS3s on launch. I doubt we will see any home burglary events.

Unless somoene knows you have an HDTV and a PS3 its very doubtful they will break into your house just looking for those items. Picking out one house on a block and getting an HDTV and a PS3 is very slim.

True, but given the small number of people who will have them early on and their pride in telling people it wouldn't take too much by word of mouth to find out where they live.

I didn't even want to mention the wait outside the shop, grab and run strategy. Scary.

Interesting question, but I really think unless you are broadcasting your new PS3 to the neighborhood by putting up signs or playing it outside somehow, I think you should be fine. I think people will have to be more careful in terms of transporting the PS3 from the store to the house. I have to take a bus, so I am going to try and find some luggage or some type of bag to put the box in (NOT an EbGames bag). Hopefully it can fit into something I can put on my back.

Do not throw out the box on garbage day. keep it in a closet. That is what I do. for the TV box... I now use it to store outher things in. (40" LCD TV box its huge).

Close cutains at night... and I doubt you will have any trouble... unless you live in a poor area.... then all people will see is drug money sitting on your shelf... shiny..
Check out this PS3 video I made:

I usually keep the box in case I need to send it in for repairs anyway. I kept the PS2 box and used it for shipping 2 times.

i mean cmon, they will only target the weak coming out of the store, you know the husband who sent his wife to pick it up , or a young kid with his grandmom, them type of guys arent men, so if you are a guy i dont think they will try anything...

PS3 is a weapon of mass destruction capable of launching missiles. Nobody in their right mind would mess with a ps3 owner. j/k

I think you're a little paranoid, unless of course you live in a bad area or something where there are too many druggies and theives lurking the streets but if that were the case I'd advise you move first then buy all the goodies.

People have HDTVs, expensive PCs, quality SS units and some hear it being used from the street.

At the end of the day anyone can have their homes broken into and I do not wish it for anybody, however if it's going to happen it'll happen, do your best at locking and securing doors, windows and what not.

I dont think it alot to worry about. There are alot more valuble things to steal from my house/garage (and alot of other peoples) then a PS3 and my HDTV. I think someone would shoot for the CBR first of all.

That's why you don't tell every single person you run into that you have a PS3. I live in the dorms here and there's only 4 people here that know I'm getting one.

my neighbors just got robbed by some "friends" they invited once so they new what to take...(HDTV, DVD players ....). So watch your "friends".

Precautions we took since we bought a big TV: we put thick curtains on the windows where the TV is...so no one know during night time that the TV is on (big TV = expensive TV= other expensive things in the house ...in a thief mind)
