So far the single play mode has lived up to all of the hype.
The game itself is as short as you've heard (10 to 15 hours), but because it is so fancy looking and fun it has tremendous replay value.
The tutorial is very informative and prepares you fairly well for the actual game.
The first act is very challenging, requireing you to utilize cover and support as well as moniter the enemy's action. The second act presents a new challenge as a new enemy unit is introduced and you gain a vehicle.
The vehicle controls are fairly easy to use, but not too responsive.
The level of swearing and violence is very appropriate for a game rated mature. There isn't a list of unnecessary swears every other scene, partly because the characters seem to be the type of people who swear, even though some of the dialogue sucks. The gore is appropriate for the action in the game. However more sensitive folk may find the "Extreme Setting" option useful.
The melee moves, including the curb stomp and chainsaw, are easy to use. Even more so once you learn the chainsaw needs to be revved a bit before making locust slush.
Your teammates are very helpful, and it is easy to learn to command them and how to utilize them in combat both before you are promoted to a command position and after. They do tend to be a bit reckless, and at times will seem throw themselves into the fire, but they also make good use of cover.
The enemy AI is also good and bloodthirsty. Locust grubs and guards will take advantage of cover, and locusts manning turrets will usually pick you as the priority over your team mates. The berserker does seem to be completely blind, but also more deadly than the game will initially let on. As the tanks of the game, the boomers are usually the only enemy unit out in the open, other than the wretches that is.
Hardcore is where the true challenge and enjoyment lies. Your enemies will be smarter, and you will do less damage and have less health. This mode will not forgive your mistakes, and all of the minibosses will be harder to defeat. If you though RAAM was a cakewalk on casual, then prepare to be impressed with his abilites on Hardcore. He will not go down easily, and you will have to develop a good strategy to defeat both the bosses and grunts in this difficulty.
So far my biggest complaint with the single player mode is that the chainsaw bayonet animation does not always sync up with the enemy you are "chainoneting." Also I have encontered a few in game load times, and at times they have taken longer than I would expect them to, and the environmetn destruction animations could have been done better. Finally, probably because I don't have access to an HDTV, the text is a little on the small side, but it is readable. Not Dead Rising/Advanced Warfighter quality.
However those are the few real complaints. Oh and also the bodies, bullet holes, and broken furniture do dissapear. That means the 360 has been officially dreamcasted /scarcasm.
I am updating this review, so if you wish to comment on a section of this review please quote it as you do so.

"Overall" is based on a mix of individual ratings and a lasting impression of the game. That means if the game is awesome it will receive a high score, and if it sucks it will receive a low score, including all scores and qualities in between.

Well even though I dislike shooters reading your review has made me rethink my decision on not buying a 360, I recently decided blue dragon and LO couldn't justify purchasing a 360 just for 2 games but for gears to have such an impact on somone who's sig show's they truly know a great game when they see one (Starcraft IS the king) makes me think it's worth considering again.
if I am in the PS3 or 360 section I will NOT post about the competitor just to please people, if you want to know what I think about the competitor link me to a thread in the appropriate section

Yea I would give this game a 10 for graphics. It's without a doubt the best-looking game I've ever played.

It deserves more than a 10 if you ask me for graphics. I don't have an HDTV and I am completely blown away by what I am seeing on my screen. It almost makes me wonder how they made it look soooooo good with such fast load times. Strange....this guy must be very hard to please then on the graphics part. Here is how I would score things...
First Impression 10 / 10 (I was BLOWN AWAY!!)
Graphics: 10 / 10
Gameplay 9.5 / 10
Story 9.0 / 10
Learning Ease 9.5 / 10
9.8/10 Would be my final score for this one.

this game can get tough in some spots.. Like a puzzle game with bullets.

Yea it's really annoying that the checkpoints come right before the narrative bits. I also don't like that you're forced to walk whenever you're talking over the radio.

After hitting the PS3, I headed back to my friends house and played some more of it. I got a good 2 hours in.
I'm not gonna give explenations, but heres how it goes...
Graphics: 9.5/10
Gameplay: 8/10
Presentation: 10/10
Story Line: 8/10
Lasting Appeal: 8.5/10

Overall: (Averaged on Calcualtor) 8.8/10

I'm curious, could you expand on especially your Graphic score and your Gameplay score?
The rest seems fair to me, perhaps storyline a little less, and lasting appeal alittle more (no reason to nitpick though, as reviews is always based on your personal opinion and preference).

I thikn the game is pretty damn good. Graphics 10, Sound 9.5, Gameplay 8.5, Storyline 8, Online experience 8.5, Lasting appeal 9.5. Great game overall, lacking multiplayer customization, maps and broken matchmaking system combined with the ever dying teamates in single player hold the game from being 10 out of 10 in my book.

On graphics, nothing is perfect. There are a few, a little few, things that I found kinda ugly. The rest of course was
.
Presentation earned itself a 10 for being so amazing and fantastic.
Gameplay, I felt it brought nothing new to the table. Your standard 3FPS stuff, with the shooting over walls added. It was extremely fun, nonetheless. I was torn between 8-8.5. Just think of it in that category.

Heres my review after playing it the other night with reasoning:
Graphics: 10
I was blown away by them. then I was informed it was a non HD tv i was on. So we moved to a HDTV and my god I have never seen anything so amazing on a screen in my life
Game play: 9
It was easy to pick up and go.I liked the feel of it. the diving and rolls were a nice feature shooting over the walls was very cool (yea i know you can do it in other games) I also like the blind shooting you can do when you dont hold down the L trigger thats a cool feature.
Story line: 9.3
It keeps me guessing im liking it. These some stuff they say and your just like what is going on and you want to keep playing to find out what happened why it happened. any game like that will score high for me.
Multi-player 9.5:
This games multi-player is were it shines the most. it takes being tactical to an all new level. I love it. Curb stomping is an amazing feature gotta love it! the chainsaws are as gruesome as it gets. enough maps to keep me coming back.
Replay Value: 10
This is one of those games i will play and beat. then play and beat then play and beat again. theres just so many things in it. be it collecting tags. or just going into a game with the intent of killing hundreds of locusts. Or playing through on co-op to get Doms achievements.
Overall score (with caculator): 9.56
amazing game.

How come everyone likes the story? From the little I have played, GeOW is very shallow in story. I'd like to find out much more about Marcus than I would about the Locust.

some of the dialoge was sort of bad but most of it was pretty funny.
the story was ok. i didn't like the whole you worked over half the game to get this one objective done then it dosn't work.
