Remember !!!, not all games support installing to hdd, and
remember !! , that PS3, just installing part of the game for caching purposes, not whole game, whole game means open the door for piracy. so you can only install part of the game ....., and the disc still have to be inserted.

I'd love an answer to that one. I just got my PS3 today and want to install some of these games onto the hard drive. I did the whole HDAdvance thing with PS2 and it saved me a lot of $$$.

It's a shame that you can't. I had a rota with my friend on launch. I would get Rsistance and Motorstorm, he would get Oblivion and Rainbow Six. Then we would swap games and put them on our HDDs.

Resistance installs 129MB of "stuff" on the HDD the first time it's run. That's what it's doing during that 45 seconds or so it asks you to wait.
RR7 and MSG Crossfire have an Install option on their respective game menus. It's akin to how Resident Evil: Outbreak works - there's an HDD Instal option on the game itself it it supports HDD install.
These installs aren't true game installs, they're just caches of data. Games still have to run off their respective discs. The only games that truly "install" are demos and games bought from PSN for the PS3 like Blast Factor.

Sigh... Sony used the wrong term, or something was lost in translation. You arent installing anything to your hard drive. The PS3 needs to cache data from the BRD for quick access, much like a paging file on a windows system. There is no way to buy (or rent) a game, copy it's contents to the hard drive, and then return it and still be able to play. That would be retarded, so dont be suprised (and dont complain) that sony did not build in that kind of functionality.
Remember kids, everyone that wants the PS3 to fail, support piracy now! Or shoot yourself.

Some these installs can be a couple gig, like NBA2k7 from Sony, which also supports this (in fact, it's required to install a portion of the game onto the HDD).

You can rip the games into ISO format onto the hdd using Linux. Thats why they shouldnt have let linux be installed on it lol.

I'm sure it'll be a long while before pirates can get around the security and encoding of blu-ray and the PS3. The 360 for example, has been out for a year now, and no HDD support for game backups. You can however flash the firmware to play burned games, but it's like 50 steps and the risks in getting caught are not worth it. Probably wont even see that for the PS3 for years.
