As I have discussed with Justin, this preview is a tough one, and it's not surprise that no one wants to touch it.

Since we've been shown a lot of MGS4 already, I think it would be beneficial for as many people to chip in as possible.

So please submit your contributions to the preview (e.g. introduction, or prediction of storyline, or review of trailers so far etc.)

Ah yes that's true. Still, a brief summary could be part of the preview.

Here is info to write this preview up...if no one wants to do it I will end up doing it later today. Here is what I will use for the preview:

    link: http://www.ps3land.com/article-305.php

A new real-time demo of upcoming Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots was released on the internet recently. The games developers opened up and explained all the newest technology that is enabled to them with the PS3's capabilities and provided many answers to unsolved questions both about MGS4 and the PS3 console itself.

The video begins with Takabe-san, the system programmer, explaining that the video they are about to show is actual video output from the devkit. The opening shot starts with Solid Snake creeping along battle torn buildings with rifle in hand and hair moving in the wind. Then the developer stops the video and begins to move the camera in real-time showing the characters stance and states that the movement in the game is very accurate. From there they talk about the sharp detail in Solid Snake's face pointing out the defined wrinkles in his face and how his hair is made up of 60,000 vertices driven by the physics engine. Also they state that his mustache alone holds more polygons than an entire character model from MGS3: Snake Eater.

Next, they begin to show the lighting in the game and how it's self-casting which means everything in the game casts its own real-time shadow and provides soft edges. Takabe-san goes on to describe the games "Depth of Field" feature which blurs things distant or in fast motion to dive depth. He states that they use HDR rendering to help the "Depth of Field" feel more accurate.

They finish showing off Solid Snake with changing lighting effects from direction to color and various filters. Then Takabe-san takes you to a different scene of the game where you get to see Otagon from a monitor on the same robot seen in the TGS MGS4 trailer. This is where things get mind blowing!

The developer states that you see Otagon is actually located in the same city you are playing in and that whatever is happening around him will show through the broadcasts on the robot. Takabe-san says that "..this Otagon is properly being rendered in real-time.." Then Shinkawa, another developer, articulates that "...it's not like a passing movie...he's there actually, he exists." Then they go on to demonstrate that they can change the lighting in the room where Otagon is located and it changes in real-time on the broadcast to Snake.

Amazingly the developers said they are still in development and its going to get much better. Hopefully we will see more at this year's E3 and get more info on the storyline and gameplay. PS3Land will keep you updated as more info is released.
    And this preview info:

We recall having heard something to this effect with previous entries in the series, but Hideo Kojima, producer/director of Metal Gear Solid 4, has stated that MGS4 will be his last game in the series. Art director Yoji Shinkawa will also leave the series after part 4, Kojima revealed during an event at Konami's Tokyo Game Show booth today.

The reason for the departure? "As a game designer, I want to make something new," Kojima stated.

Konami's TGS stage schedule is packed full of Metal Gear related events, but this particular event, titled "Mission 3 MG Saga on TGS" was of particular interest to those who've been with the series since the start. With Enterbrain's Hirokazu Hamamura at his side (Hamamura is in charge of all the Famitsu magazines -- he's pretty respected in the game development community), Kojima detailed the history of Metal Gear, starting with the first MSX2 Metal Gear game (released on 7/12/1987) and continuing on through Metal Gear Solid 4. He even shared a few personal pictures of himself.

Kojima had some interesting comments throughout the stage event. "I originally wanted to make movies and novels," he explained, "but nothing worked. I encountered the Famicom (Japanese version of the NES) when I was in a worried state." Continuing on to the NES version's sequel, Meta Gear 2 Solid Snake (released to Japan on 7/19/90), Kojima revealed that he originally didn't want to make a sequel. Good thing he did, as series character designer Yoji Shinkawa, also in attendance at the event, revealed that this sequel is what made him want to move into the game industry.

The dialogue continued into the modern day "Solid" incarnation of the series. "Through the creation of this game, we were able to form the basis for Kojima Productions," Kojima stated, revealing just what a turning point Metal Gear Solid was for him. This first PlayStation entry in the series, released to Japan on 9/8/1998, was originally started with a staff of just twenty people. Two PS2 sequels followed, leading up to the full unveiling of MGS4 earlier this week.

Jumping a bit further into the Metal Gear timeline, Kojima shared a chart detailing the organization of the Metal Gear saga. The chronology begins with MGS3: Snake Eater, followed by Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2, all three of which form the "Big Boss Trilogy." MGS, MGS2 Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 4 follow in that order, forming the Solid Trilogy. Metal Gear Ghost Babel, Metal Gear Acid and Metal Gear Acid 2 are side stories.

MGS4 seems to be generating the same level of excitement as MGS2 did when it first showed off the power of the PlayStation 2 back at E3 2000, so there's no sign of the series losing its appeal. If Kojima does move on after MGS4, we don't doubt that there will be an MGS5 some day, but perhaps it will have some competition from whatever new property Kojima turns his attention to.
