Compaq computers, are they really bad?

I think Compaq/HP PC's are junk, So many times have i seen RAM & Hard drives fail on them its not funny, they are poorly made with cheap dodgy parts & generally they are made up to 6 months before they even get sold.
Where they are good is in the support, thats basically what you pay for, buy a shit computer but get good support when it fails.
Your better spending the money buying something thats build for what you want, it may cost a little more, but it gives you the peace of mind that at least you know its got a smaller chance of failing.

The HP/compaq Media Center computers are some of the nicest MCE boxes out there, but they are also priced very similar to other boxes. For that price I would just get one of the pretty Sony MCE systems.
In general, HP/Compaq computers are garbage. They aren't worth the frieght costs to ship them to your house. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. I use to own a Compaq and I must admit that it was a decent machine. However that was at least 6 years ago so I am under the impression things have changed by what I have heard from various sources. After that machine kicked the bucket I began building my own, and have ever since.
I think at the time that machine was a Celeron 667MHz, 15GB HDD, with 64MB of RAM. Man that takes me way back!

Well Compaq has been bought out by HP since then. However HP still carries the Compaq brand of computer. I have an HP Media Center, never really gave me problems but it's more than a couple years old now. My girlfriend has it Im looking to hopefully buy a new one.

I'm not a fan of HPs or Compaqs either, but my loathing is from a PC repairman's point of view. Both Compaq and HP install their own customized versions of Windows. The problem with these customized versions is that both companies throw so much crapware and useless utilities into Windows that it actually begins to conflict with the way Windows is intended to work. This makes it a pain in the ass to try to repair, configure, or troubleshoot anything on these computers.
99% of the time all I had to do is install a non-customized version of Windows and it would fix the problem everytime. So if you do get a Compaq computer, my advice is to format and reinstall Windows with a Windows disc that doesn't come in the package. Then the PSP included a touchscreen. Then the PSP included more ram. Then the PSP finally ditched the crappy UMD format.
And then the PSP was perfect...

08-22-2005 #11Im a tech as well and I completley understand where your coming from, they have so much junk installed into it and usless app's that on their standard P4's with 256mb RAM, as soon as windows boots its sluggish.

I advise people to stay away from Compaq/HP when I can, most times I can convince people to let me build them a PC.

I've had nothing but bad experiences with Compaq/HP so I wouldn't recommend them. That's just my opinion, however, but I think there are better brands to choose from than these two.

This... is my BOOMSTICK!

I might not get comp anymore due to my pocket book running thin but PS34life good job getting a AMD processor in your laptop only place where I find Intel acceptable is in laptops because they use so much less power. Like I said I hate intel so boycott intel!

08-29-2005 #20Those Power Supply's are called Mini-ATX p/s, you can still get 3rd party supply's to replace them if your HP one dies.

I had a Compaq 486, couldn't say it was horrible. Still worked until I gave it away. What I'd recommend would be getting someone (who is certified) to build you a PC based on what you want to do. That's better than getting any brand based PC (be it HP/Compaq or DELL).

I have a Compaq, it's pretty good and fast. It's like three or four years old. It still runs good except, it just sucks with games. My Quake III runs at 35fps

Never had a hard drive fail on me, I've replaced all my original ram sets with higher memory sets, upgraded from 2 128 bits to 2 256 bits, so I can't comment onthe RAM, but I still have my original CD/RW drive and DVD drive, and my original HDD and it's fine, perfectly fine. I got it some 3 years ago and It hasn't failed me yet.
