You know, at first, I doubted blu ray would win the format war because hd dvd had the "dvd" name, and it was cheaper. But lately, I've been realizing that it appears Blu Ray is leading, which, as a ps3 owner, is very good news.

Apple=Instant win. Well, for me at least. I will support Blu-Ray just because they are (I know that sounds pretty bad, but I'm just a huge Apple fan...)

Yes I would also like to see an HD DVD list. Where does Disney stand? And I keep hearing that it matters a whole lot what the porn industry ends up using, no joke.

I can't find any lists of companies supporting HD-DVD. They don't even have an official site up yet so...

I wish Universal and New Line Cinema supported Blu-ray. A lot of my favorite movies were made by them. But oh well.....

About the sales:
HD-DVD is leading Blu-Ray but it seems the recent sales have been encouraging for Blu-Ray Movies

No they can not, each has its own special codecs and what not to run. Some companies actually wanted both formats to be supported for future players so there would be no one left behind incase one does win while the other flops. Right now HD DVD is the current sales leader with two factors: the low cost of a player (499 compared to Blu Ray at 999) and more titles. This will change in the coming months as people get more PS3's and notice Blu Ray movies.
About hybrids: there is currently only hybrid DVD and HD DVD. A hybird will not exist for HD DVD and Blu Ray because pretty much the lines are divided. Some like HD DVD while some like Blu Ray. Some companies wanted both while some were told to choose one. Later on to save face, some companies might decide to do a hybrid if they are allowed.

Yeah, every time a company has come out and stated their intention to build a hybrid machine they've had to later retract the statement (ie, LG).

Actually dispite the fact that HD-"DVD" has the DVD in it, most of the board of directors for BR are also from DVD.
So BR is the true sucessor to DVD in terms of movement. This is why earily on most companies aligned with BR because they hold the same pulls as DVD.
How well this works out we won't know for a while, but about a 3rd of them are playing both fields, but the biggest hitters ie Sony entertainment are behind BR.

Blu-Ray players DO NOT play HD-DVD. some manufacturers have hinted they may work on a hybrid player though.
HD-DVD does have an official site
http://www.thelookandsoundofperfect.com/
Disney's on the Blu-Ray Board of Directors......so I think we all know where they stand.
as far as who will win, sales and all that......too early in the game.
Sales-wise, HD-DVD should be in the lead.....they got about a 6 month headstart on BR.
The two keys, IMO, are software titles (movies) and storage capacity (as it relates to viability for storage, not application to movies and gaming).
Right now, there are more HD-DVD titles out there, but the available catalog for BR movies is larger. Warner and Paramount are the two biggest dogs playing both sides of the fence. Universal is HD only.....no BR for them. on the other side, you've got Disney (which includes a host of studios underneath them like Miramax, Buena Vista) and Sony (which is Sony Pictures, Columbia Pictures, MGM and UA). TWO mammoth libraries. What's more interesting, Warner and Paramount were HD-DVD exclusive.....then months ago, straddled both sides. I think they saw the writing on the wall.
Supply = demand. If there are more titles available on BR, logic should follow that they will win out in the end.
the other side of BR, is what it means merely as a disc for high capacity fixed storage. Why do you think there are so many computer companies like Apple lined up with BR? more spacious storage now........period.
as a web/flash professional, knowing that the BR tech is out there, with 50GB storage on one disc.....that sounds more appealing than 30GB that HD-DVD could offer as storage. now i can offload uncompressed video from RAIDs and other mass storage onto one disc.
those, i think, are the real reasons BR will win.

Disney certainly does NOT support HD-DVD.

By content alone, I don't see how HD-DVD will be able to compete once Blu-ray is spread with PS3. Blu-ray has way more exclusive content while HD-DVD doesn't even have any exclusivity at all on the top grossing movies of 2006. And no gaming content whatsoever.

I dont support one or the other, I just like movies so I have the HD DVD Player and the Blu Ray........ I buy both HD DVD and Blu Ray movies.
I love this stuff.
HD DVD has a bit of a hard time this Christmas because their players released from earlier this year are very VERY hard to find brand new in stores. They were sold out in the last few months (they didnt make that many to begin with). I was lucky to grab the last one in any store in my city. The HDA1 and the HDX1 are pretty much outta the loop. Toshiba was supposed to release the A2 and the X2 players late last month but then got pushed back because some parts of their new players didnt pass inspection. So now they arent due out till right around or right after Christmas. The only HD DVD player youll be able to get is the 360 add on, and well..... while it is a good quality player a lot of people are discouraged because it doesnt support HDMI, and most people dont want to buy a 360 JUST for the HD DVD add on.
While I just opted for the stand alone Toshiba HD A1 player, most people do not have that option anymore and this Christmas Blu-Ray has a good chance to get things rolling. Who knows though, we cannot tell the future.
Like I said.... I buy both and I enjoy it.
