Sling Blade -7.5/10- Dwight Yokum was funny yet a bastard, good acting from him in this, not to mentiion Billy Bob Thorton.
"When I was 12, I milked my eel into a pot of turtle stew. I flogged the one-eyed snake, I skinned my sausage. I made the bald man cry into the turtle stew, which I believe my sister ate. At least I hope she did."

Safe House: 6.5/10
I feel like this should have been directed by Tony Scott, but it was entertaining, although extremely cliche and done about a dozen times before. I will say this, the character interaction between Denzel and Reynolds was pretty cool, but aside from that, the movie is just based on running the whole time. It was cool to see how the CIA works. It shows more than regular CIA movies. Like how waterboarding is done.

I think its ok for one's personal favorite to be less than a 10/10 depending on their rating criteria. My favorite comedy is Kung Pow but i wouldnt rate it a 9 or anything. When I rate for example, I rate on overall quality in addition to personal taste. Gone Baby Gone is a great movie but I dont think I would ever watch it again. Same with Letters from Iwo Jima.
I think Wes was being objective with his rating. Even though he loved Tron, he knows its not a 10/10 film.you game? http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=55990

I suppose, but I'm not a fan of that criteria because it allows public conception of a film to interfere with how one rates it. TRON: LEGACY received mixed reviews, and for that reason, one might be reluctant to rate it a 10/10 even if they love it more than life itself. However, if the overall public opinion of TRON: LEGACY was much higher, one might be more open to the idea of giving it a 10/10.
And I only say this because I feel like I'm subconsciously guilty of public pandering as well. If you really liked, KUNG POW: ENTER THE FIST, then give it a high score.
P.S. Here's my brilliant review of THE AVENGERS: http://www.magjournal.net/the-avengers-review/
I just wrote it today. Discuss.

for me its not about public perception, its about quality. Kung pow is a simple movie made without standout actings, action, effects, or directing. but its unique in its own so i love it for that. But if i were to be objective, even loving the jokes and objectively thinking its hilarious, its still like an 8 at the very best in terms of quality. and even that is probably high for some reviewers.
And there are other movies where i think the acting and directing are good, and the movie is acclaim is near immaculate, but i think sucks. Raging Bull comes to mind. To me it was just such a shitty story. That is, the story of Jake just gets shittier and shittier and shittier. I mean, he married his wife saying 50 words to her and he's just a psycho and total ahole all throughout the film. I didnt even get the point of the film. sorry to go off tangent. I guess im just saying you can (sometimes) distinguish between your personal feelings and more objective feels when rating movies.Last edited by DINAMO788; 05-29-2012 at 03:48.

I don't mind people having their opinion, say, not liking the film but if you're going to write a review do yourself a favor and don't write like a troll. If you don't like Joss' writing that's fine but calling him a "talentless hack" sounds like you're looking for a fight. And then it goes into a restaurant and cave scenario which is just an irrelevant tangent. I'm not trying to bash your review but think about these things and how other people read it, when you're writing them.
I do think think it's ironic that you say it's not a bad film after all the ranting.

05-29-2012 #9543Well i guess this is where you'll lose most of your audience. And I for one, think your being unfair. If you were expecting a gritty superhero movie in the vein of the batman movies, then youre the one at fault. We all know this movie wasnt going in that direction and wasnt even trying to. None of the character movies were like that. Not even everyone's beloved iron man. Thats why I still maintain that movies like the Avengers and Ironman are B-class movies and movies like Spiderman and X-men, in general, are A-class because they arent just a bunch of action driven exploits with cheeky dialogue thrown inbetween. They took the material seriously and though action was a big component, they had meaning to them, beyond the action. I felt this was especially evident in X-men films [-origins] (my favorite comic; disclaimer).Writer-director Joss Whedon is and always has been a talentless hack, unfit to properly pen my order at a restaurant, let alone a big Hollywood adaptation of such a beloved property. His writing is massively and annoyingly pretentious; he wants you to know just how clever he thinks he is. I cannot think of a single point in the film that properly sustained a solemn or tense atmosphere for more than a couple minutes before Whedon butted in and tried to be funny.
The way you bash the writing though makes it sound like its as bad as Transformers, which is the real antithesis of Nolan's batman, not this. It had MUCH better writing than transformers and though it had a lot of quick little witty lines and jokes, none of them were shoved down your throat, which is why i wasnt bothered by the writing at all. There wasnt anything in particular that i hated. I didnt like the story and sequencing more than the writing. Also Scarlett ass shots, Whedon is not a hack.you game? http://www.ps3forums.com/showthread.php?t=55990

Well I think my personal style is supposed to make people angry … that's kinda what I do. I do like your review though.
And I wasn't expecting a gritty superhero film, but rather than make THE AVENGERS not be stupid, many of his jokes revolve around how stupid it actually is. Nolan took his material seriously, and I wasn't expecting Whedon to do it to that same degree, but I found it hard to take any bit of the movie seriously at all.

That was everything but brilliant... And why would you want to make people angry with a review? It's supposed to inform the reader of the movie's qualities or the lack thereof on the basis of a personal statement. It certainly does not need to juggle with the emotions of the reader. Let the movie itself do the job with respect to that part...

Dark Shadows - 6/10
It's an alright film, something to watch to kill time.
Men In Black 3 - 7.5/10
Not a patch on the first one, miles better than the second. Still a pretty decent film.

And I thought I did inform people of what I liked and didn't like. I can't keep how I feel about the film out of the review, so I'm not sure what you mean by "juggle with the emotions of the reader."
Besides, y'all would love this review if it was of a film like THE VOW.

All I'm going to say is that awarding a B rating for a movie seems awfully generous when you criticize the director for being a 'talentless hack'. To me anyway, it sounds like a C rating would better accompany your overall opinion.
