The Dark Knight Rises - 9.5/10

Great way to wrap up the trilogy. As for Batman's fate:

Bruce fixed the auto-pilot function while he was fixing the Bat to make sure it would work. Sure, shot of Batman before it exploded but we don't know if it was actually above the water or not. It was a close up and didn't show the surrounding area. IMO, Batman turns the auto-pilot on, blows up the top of the building with the Bat, ejects into the building so that nobody sees him and the Bat flies out of Gotham exploding and making everybody think that Batman is dead.

Well I saw The Dark Knight Rises a second time. It's still 3 stars but I think I've solidified a good list of complaints. And no, this is not nitpicking.

Bane is just a puppet. One thing I noticed that people complained about in Batman & Robin was that Bane was just a mindless puppet of Poison Ivy. Well, in this film, Bane appears to be way more in control. He's his own man, and leads an army to fulfill his whim . . . except wait a minute. He's just Talia al-Ghul's puppet, fulfilling her whim. So his actual purpose in the film isn't that different from Batman & Robin, but Nolan makes it less obvious.

Catwoman doesn't fit the universe. Perhaps I was blinded by Anne Hathaway's beautiful body in tight latex the first time I saw the film, but Catwoman fucking sucked in this movie. It appeared as if Anne Hathaway was trying to channel Michelle Pfeiffer's version of Catwoman from Batman Returns. Her version worked in Batman Returns because it was much more gothic and strange and cartoony, but Nolan's universe is supposed to be more realistic, so when Catwoman shoots Bane in the face and then makes a stupid quip, it's more annoying than entertaining. Which brings me to my next point . . .

There are too many quips. Some of the acting was really goofy, and it wasn't helped at all by the many quips this film made. Quips were made by Batman, Catwoman, and various police officers, and it really took me out of the otherwise immersive experience.

Bane's voice sucks. I actually liked the slightly less-comprehensible Bane voice in the original showing of The Dark Knight Rises's prologue. In this, he sounded like a mix between Sean Connery, Darth Vader, and that Hindu guy I get transferred to when I call Xbox 360 customer support. Some of Tom Hardy's lines were delivered well, but a lot of his lines were just goofy as all hell in their delivery.

Christian Bale's Batman voice sucks. Hearing him yell "Where's the trigger?!" is hysterical and it really shouldn't be. His hoarse voice is just awful and stupid. You would think that a man with so much awesome technology at his disposal would be able to find a better way to hide his voice than just growling.

Talia al-Ghul takes way too long to reveal herself and has a weak backstory. Why does Miranda Tate not reveal her true identity until the very end? She basically exploited Bruce Wayne for everything she needed from him by the halfway point, so there was no purpose in keeping her identity a secret, except so Christopher Nolan could provide a shallow plot twist. Also, her backstory is just dumb. She hated her father for exiling Bane, but then Batman killed her father, and then she just became supportive of Ra's al-Ghul's goal?

The cameos suck. Liam Neeson's cameo served no purpose except to create a plot hole. He comes to the conclusion that Bane is Ra's al-Ghul's heir, except Neeson wasn't actually there, so somewhere in Bruce Wayne's mind, he must have figured it out on his own. But how? The only evidence he had was that Bane had no father and Ra's al-Ghul had no son. Sorry, but you don't join a league of highly-trained assassins if you have no family problems. I would bet half of the members in the League of Shadows were fatherless (one of them being Bruce Wayne himself). Cillian Murphy's cameo was also stupid. These are crazy criminals, but we're to believe they'll just follow Bane and set up their own civil court? It was silly . . . sillyan.

There are a lot of gaps in time that aren't explained. Once Bruce Wayne escaped the prison (which was most likely on the other side of the world because the whole "deshi basara" chant is Moroccan Arabic), how the hell did he get back to Gotham City? Only one bridge and one tunnel were open and they were heavily guarded so that no one could pass through. How did Bruce Wayne find Selina Kyle inside Gotham? Matter of fact, how did he find anyone? How did he know where Commissioner Gordon was and how did he make a trail of gasoline leading to the ice upon which Gordon was walking? How did Talia become so wealthy after escaping the prison? I'm not nitpicking, in any other Batman series I wouldn't mind this so much, but again, these films are praised for being steeped in realism.

Some scenes are sooooooooo fucking stupid. The aforementioned Batman symbol done in gasoline is stupid enough, but the football field collapsing was the epitome of moronic.

The sound work is awful. It's as if Hans Zimmer took control over all the sound and was like, "Who gives a fuck if people can't hear dialogue well? Crank my score up to eleven!" Also, a lot of times, Bane's voice didn't sound like it was coming from him; the dubbing of the lines was soooooooo obvious. It seems that even when he's on a plane with loud turbines and a bag over his head, his speech is just as clear as it normally is without all those factors.

Bruce Wayne doesn't bother training Robin John Blake. I get that he's letting John Blake use all of his gadgets and stuff, but Blake has very little training, or at least a small fraction of what Bruce Wayne has. So Gotham is gonna have a half-rate Batman.

The script is weak as hell. Aside from the awful dialogue as well as the plot holes and unaccounted for time gaps, there were some plot points that were only in the film for the purpose of being conveniently available later. "Hey Bruce, I consolidated all of your bat weapons and vehicles in one big room so no one steals them! I hope no one blows up the floor!"

He is doing this because he believes in it personally and deeply. All members of the league believe in this. that is why they choose to stay and why their loyalty is unquestionable. And he did all this shit on his accord. Maybe it was inspired by Ra's Al Ghul but Bane is the one who actually did it all. He wasnt some little errand boy. and comparing him to his pet role in batman and robin is just poor. In fact, comparing anything in the Nolan trilogy to batman and robin is just....you should know better than that, man.

2. Catwoman. She fits in fine. its not a perfect fit, but when making superhero movies you try to showcase a lot of characters and story elements. Her character wasnt random. it served a clear purpose in the film. Her character was well defined enough, brought in unique elements to the film, and was purposeful in the plot.

3. Quips. I dont know man, I wasn't really turned off by any odd quips. And nothing ruins a movie for me like bad one liners or dialogue.

4. Bane's Voice. It was unusual but I enjoyed it. I dont know why people point to the Connery comparison like its an insult. You're basically convincing yourself that its bad when you think like that. Bane is south american. But he is also a well versed linguist and knows at least 6 languages fluently, including arcane and dead languages. Im sure those mixed in to the accent. And I thought it made him sound thoughtful and let the audience know hes not a big muscle bound guy, but a real intellectual. Bane is one of batman's most brilliant opponents.

5. Batman's voice. Again, you seemed keen to take it as a joke. it wasnt that different from the other films and I didnt mind it. but this one is a real personal preference thing.

6. Talia Al Ghul's reveal. Here I kinda agree with you. I think its really difficult to give everyone the backstory they deserve while keeping an immersive and coherent plot. Talia Al Ghul is quite relevant in the batman world but the reveal was kind of weak and late. She never 'hated' her father. She was always associated with the League and believed in his vision, as Bane did. Also, she wanted to take revenge on batman for killing her father. It's not a bad wrap up but it did lack development.

7. I didnt think the cameos were necessary but they didnt offend me or put me off. You're making a lot of assumptions in your analysis. We dont know who Bane's father is. What is known is Bane was basically born in the prison and inherited a life sentence from his father. bane was simply a brilliant kind with amazing ability and mind for strategy. It's probably these unique and amazing talents which caught Ra's attention and thats how he was brought in. I dont know why you need family problems to join the league. That seems totally irrelevant.

8. This is where I have the biggest issue with critiques of the film. If something as trivial (yes, it is fucking trivial in relation to the plot of the movie) how did he have time to make the make the gasoline batman symbol, then you're focusing on the wrong things. This movie is already long, and its not worth the time or effort to include a full explanation for every insignificant detail which does not affect the story. How does he get back to gotham? who cares. Lets say he knows powerful people in almost any country from his business dealings and connections. The only thing you should have taken from that was he escaped and was coming back to save the city. That was the only intention. How did Talia become rich after escaping prison? I dont know, ask any rags to riches millionaire/billionaire. Make something up. seriously, how is that relevant to the situation at hand in any way. Why are you looking for problems?

9. Scenes were fine. The flaming bat signal looked cool and served as a symbol of hope for the citizens of Gotham. The stadium collapse showed the nation that Bane wasn't fucking around. Also, I guess in exchange for stadium use they had to showcase Hines Ward lol.

10. Sound. I do wish the speech was clearer at times. Especially for Bane.

11. Are you seriously knocking the next batman before you've even seen what they do with Blake? Also, who the hell is john blake? I know dick grayson and tim drake, I dont know any john black

I thought the stadium scene was very cool. It was simply there for shock factor but what movies don't do something like this at some point. Although it was a large collection of people and a good place to get their point across about the bomb.

I agree with most of this so I won't repeat.

Unexplained time gaps are not plot holes. They are simply irrelevant time gaps. The story takes place over many months. The movie isn't about how he got back, it's about him gaining the strength, physically and mentally, to save Gotham. You can use your imagination as to what happened in between, because not every little thing needs explaining. If they went and explained every time gap there'd probably be complaints about too much time spent on irrelevant aspects and not on the core narrative.


BTW Dinamo, I pulled this piece about John Blake from the IMDb FAQ (which has some pretty good answers in general, check it out) to answer your question about that.

John Blake is a symbol for what Batman inspires and may be the successor Batman had been looking for since The Dark Knight. In the Batman universe, there are a few Robins, with John Blake being a product of the three of them. Nolan took aspects from Dick Grayson, Jason Todd and Tim Drake to create Robin John Blake: (1) Dick Grayson - a morally righteous orphan, much like Bruce, and additionally became a police officer (2) Jason Todd - his anger issues are much like Blake's tendency to hide his anger and desire to lash out behind a smile, and (3) Tim Drake - much like Blake, Tim becomes Robin by figuring out Batman's identity, which is probably the strongest resemblance to the character.

If you're putting so much effort into scrutinizing all these MINOR details which, in the big picture of the movie, are quite unimportant, they you're simply looking for shit wrong with it instead of trying to enjoy it and appreciate it as it is. If you let these things ruin the entire experience for you, the film never had any hope.

If you've followed some of my posts, you may already know that I marginally prefer Batman Begins. But this is also an incredible movie. Fuck, it's so good. In terms of acting, it's probably the best in the series.

Saw the Dark Night Rises last night. I'd give it a solid 9/10. I enjoyed it from start to finish but I think i was probably expecting just a little bit too much. It was a long film that i thought it could've easily been an hour shorter (maybe i just think that because i went to a 11:30pm showing) but it kept me interested throughout the duration of the film and offered a few cheap laughs throughout.

I may go watch it again so i guess it wasn't a bad film if it left me wanting for more.

I can buy a dude in a Batman suit. I can buy a secret league of assassins, and I can buy the whole plot of the film. What I can't buy is things that even in that universe are stupid, like Batman learning new information he didn't previously know from a dream, or criminals becoming a self-governing society in Gotham. That kind of stuff is just incredibly dumb, and Nolan for the most part made Batman believable, so it's kinda pathetic how much he flew away with this one.

I like how it only took three movies before you finally bring this up.

It's always been an issue with the trilogy, but the other films weren't stupid like The Dark Knight Rises. I guess that's my biggest complaint with the film. It's just dumb as hell.

11. It's not a major complaint, but Nolan didn't exactly end the film well because of it.

12. The plot holes are things like how Batman figured out Bane's relation to Ra's al-Ghul. If not plot holes, then at least it's a huge suspension of disbelief, and one I'm not willing to make. I can buy a dude in a Batman suit. I can buy a secret league of assassins, and I can buy the whole plot of the film. What I can't buy is things that even in that universe are stupid, like Batman learning new information he didn't previously know from a dream, or criminals becoming a self-governing society in Gotham. That kind of stuff is just incredibly dumb, and Nolan for the most part made Batman believable, so it's kinda pathetic how much he flew away with this one.

It's always been an issue with the trilogy, but the other films weren't stupid like The Dark Knight Rises. I guess that's my biggest complaint with the film. It's just dumb as hell.
