Bad Lieutenant: New Orleans 7.7/10

I have to say TRF was right about this one, a lot more enjoyable and not depressing like the first one. There is a Wicker Man moment from Nic Cage which makes it hilarious because he's high in it and sometimes he talks in a funny accent, as if he were a movie star from the black and white detective era of movies. I don't know if that was on purpose or for whatever reason but it felt weird. Other than that. Awesome movie. Eva Mendes is hot and that girl from the Waterboy is in it and her body is goddamn amazing...oh my god.

But I like how the character starts off with being a little corrupt and still some good in him to pure corrupt and evil. He pays his debts by the end and doesn't get killed. I like that, there's no need for a bad ending.

That being said, Harvey Keitel has the best overall performance, but it's too goddamn depressing.

Yeah, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans has a more hopeful ending while Bad Lieutenant just makes you feel like shit. There's no real development in it, so it's depressing as hell from start to finish.

1. Darth Vader managed to take control of his situation and kill the emperor, so comparing him to Bane isn't exactly accurate. Vader became his own man when he did the right thing and saved his son.

2. She was horribly-written. She tried too hard to be Michelle Pfeiffer and just came off as annoying. The film would've been better without her. Also, she had no chemistry with Christian Bale

3. One-liners and bad dialogue can enhance the right film, like if it's a cheesy good time, but they don't belong in Nolan's Batman films. The weak comic relief was just distracting.

4. I use the Connery voice as an insult because his voice is silly.

7. You don't need family problems to join the League. What I'm saying is that it's stupid how Batman made the connection between Bane and Ra's al-Ghul.

Batman had a limited amount of time to disarm the bomb, yet he decided to make a giant bat made of gasoline and led the trail of gasoline to the ice before Gordon even walked out on the ice? On that note, wouldn't Batman being able to fake his death be contingent on him getting rid of the bomb at the last second?

9. Those were scenes I'd expect to see in a Michael Bay film. Just soooooo stupid. And the field collapsing right behind the player, him essentially outrunning it, made me laugh in the theater.

11. It's not a major complaint, but Nolan didn't exactly end the film well because of it.

12. The plot holes are things like how Batman figured out Bane's relation to Ra's al-Ghul. If not plot holes, then at least it's a huge suspension of disbelief, and one I'm not willing to make. I can buy a dude in a Batman suit. I can buy a secret league of assassins, and I can buy the whole plot of the film. What I can't buy is things that even in that universe are stupid, like Batman learning new information he didn't previously know from a dream, or criminals becoming a self-governing society in Gotham. That kind of stuff is just incredibly dumb, and Nolan for the most part made Batman believable, so it's kinda pathetic how much he flew away with this one.

It's always been an issue with the trilogy, but the other films weren't stupid like The Dark Knight Rises. I guess that's my biggest complaint with the film. It's just dumb as hell.

I'm only gonna talk about the Bane and Ra's al Ghul connection and the dream.

It's just for theatricality purposes. When the guy in the prison was describing the refugee/mercenary, I turned to the person I was seeing the movie with and said "Oh shit, Bane is Ra's al Ghul's son!". I put the pieces together pretty easily (even though that's obviously not the correct conclusion). But it's a movie, he's not just gonna have Bruce Wayne go "Oh shit, yeah, I get it, he's his son.", he's gonna do it in a more entertaining and presentable way. And even then it's not that outlandish. While the people in the audience hear the story of the mercenary and put the pieces together instantly, Bruce Wayne was beat to shit at this point and didn't have the energy to maybe even think clearly, so his subconscious put the pieces together in the form of a dream.

You're just trying too hard to find things that are "wrong" with the movie and thinking the smaller details are bigger than they really are.

But anyway, I'm seeing the movie again finally this weekend, and will be back with a re-review. I'll try to pay more attention to these things. But I'm pretty sure they will not ruin the experience for me.

The Animatrix: 10/10

One of my favorite anime. The amount of creativity that is put into animation is astounding. And this one is no stranger to that. The Animatrix is comprised of seven short films (eight if you count the two-part, "Second Renaissance), with seven different directors. Each film is individualistic on its own. It has its own animated art style and ideas and that's what makes this a worthy successor the Matrix Trilogy. In fact, this should have been the sequel to the first movie. But it makes sense in the time-frame that it came out in. It explains the background of The Matrix mythos through those seven short films.

In chrono-order:

The 2nd Renaissance: Part 1 & 2 explains the history of the machines and how they formed the matrix. This is easily my favorite one because of the ironic elements that contrast with each other. Man and machine. Man vs. machine. Man fights machine with machine. And there are a few subtle references to historic events that have happened, like the Tehran square photograph.

A Detective Story is anime noir, and beautifully done. The time this takes place is vague, but it suggests that it could be right before Trinity meets Neo or after he's converted into the real world. This is a story about a cop who tries to understand why people are going crazy in his city (due to them believing they are in a dream world), and he goes into hacker hideouts on the Net until he finds Trinity. The film starts with an epilogue, and ends with it.

Kid's Story takes place between the Matrix and Reloaded. The kid is essentially the teenager you see in the sequels who thinks he's been saved by Neo, and kind of looks like Justin Timberlake if you add some hair. The film explores how he's been saved by Neo by waking up from the Matrix. And the art style is meshed and jumbled, but still has its own flare.

Final Flight of the Osiris is the first short film that plays when you start the movie. It's completely CGI and you see a small glimpse of it in the sequels and in the Enter the Matrix videogame on a small screen within the scene. The story basically takes place right before Reloaded and it shows how a ship got lost in the tunnels and eventually reached the Machine City where they witnessed the machines preparing an attack for Zion.


The rest of the shorts are all spin-offs, but still refer to the Matrix and compare with characters from the movies and how they contrast.

Program is about a simulation used as a test to see if a crew member still sticks by the decision of choosing the red pill.

World Record is about a track running athlete who slowly realizes his reality is not true. But agents try to stop that, however, he still manages to break a world record and walk in the end because he's "waking up".

Beyond is my 2nd favorite short. It takes place in the Matrix. In Japan, and it's a story about a teenager who loses her cat and must follow her trail to an abandoned haunted house that has something different about it. The gravity there is distorted and everyone is light as a feather. To the agents, this is a glitch in the program, or in the Matrix. They evacuate everyone from there and destroy the place. At the end, the teenager still tests to see if there is any magic left in the place, but there isn't. What I found ironic about it is how it correlates with Alice in Wonderland, and this is by how she chases her missing cat through the rabbit hole to the haunted house with the distorted gravity physics.

Matriculated, my third favorite, is about a crew of freed minds in the real world who capture machines to see if they can free machines just like they do humans. This is probably the most artistic one of all, and the most colorful one. Each scene with the machine being jacked into the Matrix is so beautifully done. The cinematography is just astounding, and it feels like you're in a dream world or experiencing astral projection.

And throughout these films, there seems to be a lot of Buddhist imagery and references, just like in the movies. But as I said, each short film is unique in its own way and should not be missed. Definitely watch these. If you can shell out $50-100, then go for the Ultimate Matrix collection on blu-ray, or DVD. Yeah, the sequels are not worthy of the first movie, but they are a welcome addition to me and I enjoyed them and still do to this day. But I think the Animatrix is the true worthy successor and sequel/prequel to The Matrix.



I'm hoping to get a hold of Ghost in the Shell because it was the inspiration for the Matrix.

I didn't say he was following the comics. I was just commenting that Ra's al ghul could have been revived after the train crash in Batman Begins. I'm not saying he was revived, I was just trying to clarify that it's technically possible that he could have been if Nolan wanted him to.

Machine Gun Preacher 10/10- Oh man did this one catch me off guard. I saw the trailer and thought it would be good but didn't think it could be this great. I know many won't give it a perfect score but this movie was the most inspiring movie I've ever seen. It shows how someone can better their life and actually better others in the process. It is so crazy to think that the person in the movie is an actual person who lived this tale. Such an amazing story. There were some pretty bad accents in the movie but it wasn't enough to knock it down because the movie was that good. I was glued from beginning to end.

The Dark Knight Rises - 8/10

Well, I've seen this twice now. I didn't know what to make of it after one viewing, so luckily my company all went to see it yesterday in IMAX. Pretty cool, eh?

Anyway, I feel the first half is poorly pasted (the scenes are a bit messy and lack flow). This is because a lot of different characters are shown and they're not all brought together until shit starts to go down in the second half of the movie.

Also, I feel the story is bit pretentious at times, again, more so in the first half. There's a lot of scenes where we don't know what's going on or what the goal is, yet there's action that we're supposed to care about.

As for Bane, I couldn't understand about 20% of what he said, even though I really liked his voice. I also didn't like his "conclusion". Pretty anti-climactic.

Other than that though, it was well done!

Half of Bane's lines are about removing the corrupt politicians and wealthy aristocrats from power and giving it back to the people (despite his ultimate plan having nothing to do with that) and he even takes down the Gotham Stock Exchange a.k.a. Wall Street. I'm not saying it's wrong for a film to have a message, but to say the film makes no parallels to the Occupy movements across the nation is a little silly in my opinion because it's so blatantly shoved down our throat in Bane's dialogue, again, despite it having nothing to do with anything.

Oh and if i was thinking about my movies like you at least half the movies i love would be shit. To you it means i love shit but to me it means i try to enjoy things in life even if they are not perfect. Life is pretty shitty for me in general and movies are one of my few escapes so i try to have fun with movies. I get where you are coming from though and thank you for your opinion.
