I'm the same way. I don't have that bone that makes me pull apart every detail of a movie. I usually sit back and watch a movie and enjoy. If there are any problems that I see with a movie they are usually very apparent to most. Not saying critiquing a movie is a bad thing, I just think that is takes much of the enjoyment out of the movie. That's why my 10/10 is usually someone else's 7-8/10.

Raid redemption
9/10
What a movie, the action and fighting is unbelievable, makes 99% of other fighting films look like child play, very brutal and not a bad story too. Very good camera, not bad it was subbed though and quite short :P.
Defiantly worth the watch if your into kung fu style fighting.

I just rewatched "The Prestige"
Love how you recognize scenes with such important symbolism and other literary devices the second time around.

Phenomenal film with an equally amazing sound track.
Now I'm googling Edward Zwick for his other movies

Oh, I saw that movie on the TV when I was in Germany. It was really good. 9.5/10

“Thank you Mario! But our Princess is in another castle!” (Super Mario Bros.)
"Why not take a break? You can pause the game by pressing +." (Wii Sports)
“It’s super effective!” (Pokemon series)

I finally saw the Marty McFly trilogy and before I get all the hate, let me assure you that I tried to watch it with an open mind.
I would rate the trilogy a 7/10, the best being the first movie.
I like the way they handled time, but there were some parts in that movie that didn't take itself seriously even though the subject matter is very serious (like gee, I dunno, going back in time and your own mother trying to have sex with you?). It was handled in a mild tone, but I guess that's its own style. Th 2nd movie I really couldn't take seriously, not after how retarded Robert Zemeckis imagined the future. I can buy the hover board, the self-serving diners and the video conference in your own home, but I couldn't buy the look of the place or the fashion choices. Why is MJ suddenly serving customers in a diner? This was clearly done for the time people were living in. And Marty's nemesis is very immature for his age. "Butthead" really? But the good parts are all in the original, first movie. They should have stopped there.
And here's the funny thing, I love the Indiana Jones trilogy, but not this one, and I didn't grow up on them or live through the 80's. Hell, I love Ghostbusters too! But not this one. But what Zemeckis did to the future is forgivable because he's made some decent films over the coming years (Forrest Gump, Contact, except for that ending lol).

I'm indifferent to the Indiana Jones trilogy. But I agree with you on the Back to the Future trilogy. I enjoyed the original the most and, as for the sequels, feel that the third movie is better than the second.

Agreed.
Ghost in the Shell: 10/10
I was watching a special feature on the Animatrix that talks about anime and they touched upon the process and creation of it, how it all started. Joel Silver, the producer on the Matrix trilogy, mentioned Ghost in the Shell as a major reference for the Matrix and that grew my curiosity to see it.
My mind is blown after seeing this movie. I have so much to process after what I just saw, but damn it was amazing, an information overload. This isn't your typical action anime with guns blazing. It's a slower paced anime, but the 'less is more' figure of speech works here for that matter.
Everything else is so beautifully done. The cinematography is superb and the musical score just adds to it. I remember saying Akira is the unofficial sequel to Blade Runner, but I think Ghost in the Shell is its true successor. Ghost in the Shell covers the main theme of Blade Runner and expands on it through key dialogue scenes. There is so much philosophy in this that it forces you to think for a good few hours.
And I can see how the Matrix was influenced by this movie. There's certainly some shots in the Matrix that pay homage to this anime. Hell, even some material from the Metal Gear Solid series seems to be reminiscent of Ghost in the Shell. Specifically, its heavy dialogue and philosophy on war and nuclear deterrence. Different subjects, but similar way of approaching it to the viewer, through philosophical discussion in dialogue. Self awareness, if you will.
I highly recommend this if you're into the sci-fi genre, or if you're taking philosophy courses. Or if you just wanna see a damn good film and ingest some knowledge.

The last movie i watched was Iron Sky. Watched it on Monday and it was a brutal film. Basically its about moon nazi's. They went to the moon after WWII and now they are returning to earth in the year 2018 to take over the planet.
I'd give it 3/10.
I also watched Ghost Rider 2 on Saturday and its another shite film. The 1st one was and still is way better than the sequel. Nicholas Cage should be ashamed of this muck movie he starred in.
This gets 2/10.

Finally saw The Dark Knight Rises, I'm going to say something and probably various people here will disagree. So be it... It's better than the Avengers.
8-8.5/10
The movie has a lot of great story and psychological wrap-up from the past two movies to conclude the trilogy. One of the stronger points is Alfred's speech and how it shapes the story. I enjoyed that even the vehicles have a sort of arc, Batman gets the Bat, Catwoman partners with the Pod, and Bane turns the original against batman/the city. Anne actually comes out on top as the best character which is great to see. Bane is very good but I personally prefer the Joker who can embody a grounded personality while raising the city to the ground the next day.
The bad parts... unfortunately the movie doesn't fire on all cylinders. It seemed like Nolan and Goyer could have written a novel in place of a movie. The story encompasses so much, not in terms of trying to like Transformers but in being the climax of the trilogy. Nolan strips the movie down to the necessities which makes the pacing somewhat rocky and stretches believability. It's hard because I can't picture the movie taking longer but it certainly couldn't be shorter without being blatantly choppy. The villain does get a somewhat cop-out end but it happens from a turn in the tables so-to-speak.
Nolan, your great director, but you need to work on the sound mixing. It's not the first time and I wish it was the last... not likely though. I'll have a full review on my blog.

Blue Velvet:
I'm not sure how to rate this because I love and hate it. There's some really wierd and random points in the movie that just showcases Lynch's oddball style of directing and it's not the first time I had a problem with it, remember the Dune review? But what I loved about it was the surrealism, which does get weird, but I think it adds a nice touch to the setting of the story. Here you have this nice, suburaban place that looks all honky-dory on the outside, but underneath it is a monster who no one seems to know about. That's where Frank Booth comes in, played by the late, great Dennis Hopper. They say this is his best or most memorable role as a villain and that statement is spot-on. You have this sociopath who enjoys his split personality and does so by inflicting pain on others, on his sex slave, this singer he owns and is holding her family hostage. Lynch takes it to the max with the violence. And that's pretty impressive for an 80's movie. The score also helps illustrate that this is film noir, to a certain extent with some Lynchian absurdity (the part I can't absorb). However, this movie does make me want to see his other cult classics like Lost Highway and Muholland Drive. I'd say the only person who can get away with being a total weirdo (and I mean that in the nicest way) and making it work is Stanley Kubrick. Because he makes you think why the scene feels so weird and makes you question and come up with several conclusions about the plot or character(s). I guess you can say I have a love/hate relationship with David Lynch. Oh and I also want to see Twin Peaks. Another thing is how True Romance borrows quite a bit from Blue Velvet. It's got Dennis Hopper in it for one thing, and it's about a woman in trouble.
Lethal Weapon: 9/10
Wow, I am so ashamed of myself for skipping out on this movie for so many years. I've seen most of part 4, but I should have never doubted Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, and I like both those actors. This is not just some typical buddy cop film from the 80's. There's more layers to it. It has a serious side and I expected this to be an action-comedy, and in some ways, it is, but it's so much more. Danny Glover and Mel Gibson have some amazing on-screen chemistry and it's hard to like one character more than the other because there's admirable qualities about both of them. Hell, even Gary Busey, despite seeming a bit two-dimensional is likeable. And I should mention that the cinematography shines in some scenes and it's written by the great Shane Black, who did Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. I haven't seen too many action-cop films from the 80's, but I have a feeling Lethal Weapon broke some of the norms and cliches of those kinds of movies, and it did it so well. If this is on blu-ray, I'm definitely getting it. I'm a little scared to watch the sequels, are they as good as this brilliant one?Last edited by DreDayDetox; 08-02-2012 at 06:47.

Atlas Shrugged 6/10- This was an interesting enough movie just very slow. I'm looking forward to the second part just to see how the story goes. Not that the movie was that great but the story that it is based off of was very interesting. Actually had a surprising number of recognizable actors in it. They all played their parts well which was one thing that made this movie average and not terrible. Just way too slow for an hour and a half long movie. Sadly though the sequel has been completely recast.

The movie is a joke IMO. I watched about 15 minutes of it and turned it off. My graduating class had better short films.
I've heard the book is good for those interesting in that kind if thing. So it's kind of a shame that it's represented that poorly. Thankfully it seems like they realized that.

Melancholia 5.5/10- This movie was much like Atlas Shrugged in the sense that it was insanely slow and didn't really pick up until the end. Part 1 in the movie was boring as hell. Part 2 was much better and interesting than the first. Although it wasn't leaps and bounds better. I respect all the aspects of the movie such as acting and filming but other than that this was a snoozefest. Don't really know how in the hell this got rated that good. Not to mention the intro was just down right fucking weird and drawn out. It makes sense after you've seen the movie but just seemed a bit unnecessary.

Antichrist 6.5/10 - I don't know why I watched another Lars Von Trier movie but I will say I enjoyed this one more than Melancholia. Although this one was much more weird. It's got weird moments in places all through the movie but the last 20 mins was just WTF. I did overall enjoy the story more than Melancholia but this guy is just plain fucking disturbed to put it nicely. This movie was very controversial and I can fully see why.
Metropia 8/10- This was an animated movie that was original down to its core. I've never really seen the type of animation used in any other movie. The story in it was very interesting although a little stupid. Not to mention some high caliber voice actors with the likes of Juliet Lewis, Alexander Skarsgard, Stellan Skarsgard, and a few other notables. Pretty good watch and pretty funny. It's on Netflix if anyone is interested.

If you think Lars Von Trier is weird, watch a David Lynch movie. I loved Melancholia. I'm curious to see Antichrist though because I heard Willem Dafoe does a good performance.
