This is a favourite and it's been a while since I've seen a good documentary. If you're in the film industry, in film school or a consumer who buys digital or film products for your camera, then you'll really appreciate this doc. It explains film and digital, and basically puts them in a ring. We have Keanu Immortal Reeves doing the interview questions on these various famous directors and cinematographers. He asks them about film and digital, and everyone has an opinion.

You have these comparison and contrast points. Pros and cons of film vs. digital. There's good arguments for both sides, and basically what I got from it is that visually, film looks better and that the process of loading a magazine of film or doing everything on film manually is better than having the convenience of digital.

But then digital argues that it's cheaper and faster to make movies that way, and I can agree with this because I'm in film school. I've already experienced working with actual film on an old school ARRI camera from Germany, where they manufacture them and I hate it. You have to buy film, and it's $1 per foot of film, so essentially you have to make your actors perform at their best in every single take or second of the day, there's no room for error because you're rolling film through that camera that is being wasted, so you're rolling money strips and they're being burned.

With digital, it's so much faster, because you get to finish more scenes in one day than with film, it's also cheaper because you're using some form of card or flash drive to shoot your footage. And when it's full, you can just off load your footage onto your computer, format your card and film with the same card, just more material.

This documentary explains all that, and even goes into other post production sections of film-making, like digital and color correction, which is a really cool process and looks like a super advanced version of Photoshop, while giving a history lesson on those inventions and again, more arguments for it and against it by actual film-makers in the industry. Highly recommended.

If the story is not tied into Quantum of Solace, I'm sure I will get around to seeing it. Only reason I say is because I haven't seen Solace and don't really plan to watch it anytime soon. Are they linked at all?

Skyfall looks like it should be a good film, the reviews have been favourable.

I'm currently watching Avengers Assemble - it's got quite a bit of action and I've got plenty of time for Scarlett Johansson!

    i would give it 6.5/10

We Need To Talk About Kevin: 8/10

Woah. This is one fucked up movie. Aside from that, I love the score and the composition. It also teases you a lot, constantly keeping you anxious as it builds up to whatever it needs to reveal. The actor who plays Kevin is really good, but I have a real hard time picturing Tilda Swinton doing an American accent, and being in the movie. Does she choose to be that anorexic on a regular basis?

This is also one of my favorite films of the year and one of the few films I've given 4 stars to. I just like hearing filmmakers talk, so watching interviews with Martin Scorsese, James Cameron, David Lynch, etc. would be enough for me, but it's really informative. It certainly changed how I feel about George Lucas. I used to dislike the guy and even though his prequel films are bad and the changes he's made to the originals are indefensible, I've come to realize that he is a one of the most important filmmakers in cinema history, at least in terms of technology. He changed the Hollywood structure by promoting digital filmmaking in the mainstream.

I haven't seen Quantum of Solace or Skyfall, but Bond films are never linked story-wise as far as I know.

Exactly. I dunno if I really care for the changes he made in the special edition of the original trilogy. I wasn't there when they first came out, so it doesn't affect me at all. The one change he made in the blu-ray in Return of the Jedi wasn't really necessary though. But yeah, I owe him my thanks because I'm not a fan of using film cameras at all lol. But I'm also not gonna be in people's faces about digital like Robert Rodriguez, because that's just an asshole thing to do.

    Chronicle

It's a bit of an unusual film but it picks up after the first 20 minutes or so. Some lads that like filming stuff get sidetracked at a party, go for a wonder and find a cave that gives them powers and the story goes on from there.

    I would give it a 7/10.

    SKYFALL: 9/10

Skyfall was the bond movie we've all been waiting for. I love that Sam Mendes directed this because he's a damn good director. If you don't know who that is, then you'll know he made AMERICAN BEAUTY and REVOLUTIONARY ROAD, among other great works. Let me just say that this is one helluva of an amazing Bond movie and an unforgettable one. I had my doubts about the villain, because of the way they made him look in the trailer, but Javier Bardem still manages to surprise me with his brilliant acting. There's this long shot where he gets introduced, and this guy can act like it's nothing to him. He's gonna become one of those memorable Bond villains like Jaws and Oddjob.

Other than the great acting from Daniel Craig, Judi Dench and Javier Bardem, the cinematography is outstanding! Whoever said that there's some Blade Runner influence in this was right. There's a sequence in the film that really reminds me of Deckerd entering the Bradbury hotel and the rest, reminding me of 2019 LA. There's also some subtle references to previous Bond films in this like Live and Let Die and my favourite, Goldeneye. When I heard the Goldeneye reference, I cried tears of happiness, more so because of the person who was saying the line.

But what I really loved about it was the way Sam Mendes set the movie up so that there would be more sequels, or a new era of Bond. By the end, you get the sense that these three movies were just the start of it all. There will definately be more Bond movies. I can't wait to live long enough to see the 100th anniversary of James Bond, and see what goodies the Bond100 film collection will offer. By then, we'll probably all have holographic displays that run off laser projects at insane 4k or 6k resolutions or even higher.

But yeah, I raise a glass of martini, shaken, not stirred, to BOND, JAMES BOND. LONG LIVE BOND!!!!

    Go see this movie.

    Wreck-It Ralph: 7.5/10

This is the first Disney animated movie I've been to, and the only reason I went to see it is because it's based on videogames and I saw some popular videogame characters in there like Bowser and Zangief. So yeah, it was worth it. I love what they did with the animation for the Fix-It Felix characters, how they all move in block-like ways, it was so cool to see that 8-bit transition into a full, 3D environment. It had its super cheesy moments, but I did laugh quite a bit at all the great videogame references. I have a feeling it has a deeper message than the plot, that arcades were a fun past time of ours, but now they don't exist anymore because we have them in our home. In a sense, the console killed the arcade. I also absolutely love the animation short film that starts before this film, really great ideas and and style. The only person missing from this movie was Link. Arguably has the best game ever made according to thousands of people and review sites, but yet there is not one single reference to him or Zelda. Did Nintendo ask for too much money to put him in? I mean they got Luigi in the movie and even Mario as a line of reference, but apparently Link has the most expensive rights. I loved the Metal Gear Solid nod. That was so nice, and I got a chuckle out of it.

A good animated film with a bunch of great nods to famous and not-so-famous video game characters from the past and present.

Skyfall 8/10- The action in this movie was great as well as the characters. Although the story was a bit weak in my eyes, it didn't disappoint as a Bond movie. Overall great movie.
