I would've given it an 8 but I didn't like the ending that much. I can infer my own conclusion but such is never satisfying. That said, the acting is excellent. This movie is intense, passionate, bleak, warm, difficult, the list goes on. Quality movie, though only a one time viewing.

    Iron Man 3 - 7.5/10

Robert Downey Jr was amazing as always and I enjoyed seeing Tony struggle with understanding the world since the Avengers. The extremis story line was great. They should have had the extremis story only and not the Mandrain because it was really cool seeing it being played out and showing just how powerful extremis really is. The final 30 minutes is action packed and purely amazing (Especially in IMAX).
It's funny that in this day in age people can steal as long as they have a reason too. Even if that reason is created by the thieves themselves.

Just saw a super advance screening of this on Thursday night (it's out June 21). Very funny, enjoyable, & heartfelt. A real return to form for Disney Pixar!

    A solid 4 out of 5.

Got an advance screening of The Great Gatsby tomorrow!

    City of God: 8.5/10

Wow. Talk about $#@!ed up. City of God doesn't joke around about the environment the characters grow up, but it's really the editing and the narration that sell his harsh reality the people of Rio have to live with. We are given two characters to look out for, one who is a photographer and one who is a gangster, or "hood" as described in the film.

What I didn't really like about it was that it had far too many characters to keep track of. I mean, the narration really works to piece the story together, and it reminds me a bit of Pulp Fiction, which says a lot about the direction and cinematogaphy of this wonderful gem, but it's just a tad convoluted with characters.

Aside from that, great acting from everyone, some really intense moments, especially the one where he makes the kid choose who to kill in the alley and of course the prologue moment. The chase sequence with the chicken at the beginning was really nice, and it complemented the way this story is told later on.

Death Proof (directed by Quentin Tarantino)

This was probably my third time viewing this movie, but there was a long gap in time between the last time l saw it, and for the better. l wasn't much of a fan the first time l saw this in the cinema, but that was because l didn't get it. This is a film not to be taken seriously. It is a throw back to the b-movies or "grindhouse" movies released back in the day, which featured gore, ultra violence, and young women generally being brutally murdered. Now l got it and it was a good watch once l left my brain at the door. Apart from the ongoing dialogue from characters who are unlikable with the exception of stuntman mike, the movie genuinely has some great features. Brilliant stunts, car chases, soundtrack, direction, cinematography, action and a stellar performance from Kurt Russell.

Good watch but l would recommend turning off your brain while doing so...

Not as good as I was hoping, but still enjoyable.

The thing after the credits was a little retarded.

    The Amazing Spiderman: 5.5/10

I liked the first 40 minutes but it reached it's top $#@! point with uncle ben's murder and aside from some of the cute Peter/Gwen stuff, it just wasn't that great. Just another superhero movie they threw together to make money. I also didn't like Ifrans as The Lizard or how they portrayed him. I thought Dylan Baker was better.

    Elephant 7/10

This is from Gus Van Sant's Death Trilogy. The 2nd one in the collection. This is the controversial one that is based on the columbine massacre and what a way to be effective with the camera! Almost every single shot of this is long, like in Children of Men, although most of the shots seem very out of place and anti-climactic, with very little room for any character development whatsoever, except for Eric and Alex.

And did they forgot to white balance and color correct? Anyway. The long steadicam-like shots that follow the characters are supposed to give us insight into what they are, but it's really just a mockumentary on their daily lives in high school. The best is obviously Alex and Eric's story.

It's worth a watch for sure.

I'm a big fan of Van Sant but never heard of this trilogy. Is it like a documentary style kind of film?

In a sense, yes. Just the way he shot it and the way it's edited makes it feel like a doc, more or less.

A damn fine film, and a good swan song for director Steven Soderbrough, after leaving the film business. It's not the biggest way to go out, but it is the boldest. And this film certainly feels bold in its presentation. From the trailers, you have a film about the side effects of prescription drugs, just like the title suggests, but when you see it, it's a whole nother beast of a film.

Great writing on that behalf, and let me just say that Rooney Mara is goddamn beautiful in this. So sexy, and of course that comes with great acting. Jude Law steals the show near the end, and there's a really sexy erotic scene between Rooney Mara and Catherine Zeta-Jones. It's quite close to Mulholland Drive. Catherine Zeta Jones is still hot.

But aside from that, good shot composition, editing and pace. I just didn't like the twist too much. It could have been more subtle. And also, I thought this was gonna feel like a sequel to Contagion, but it doesn't at all, it's completely different and that came unexpected when I saw it, so kudos to Mr. Soderbrough for excellent writing.

    The Great Gatsby

Saw an advance screening of Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby on Monday night. The original novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald is one of my all-time favorite novels. This new film adaptation was…interesting. I thought the first half was very cool with Gatsby’s parties & a hyper-realistic 1920s though. The cast was more than solid, especially with really great performances by Leonardo DiCaprio (Gatsby) & Carey Mulligan (Daisy).

It’s soundtrack, produced by Jay-Z, is better than the film. Great stuff mixing modern styles like hip-hop with 20s jazz. Lana Del Rey’s “Will You Still Love Me” served as a recurring theme & is airy & beautiful, yet melancholy.

Check out my full review on 411mania.

Slips in with a 7 out of 10.
