Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD unknown secret weapon emerges..

Unless your a technical junkie you may know that Blu-Ray and HD-DVD are the two new formats fighting for your DVD dollars, on face value both can provide increased visuals over current DVD's, providing you have a proper TV to justify the purchase there is one more thing most of us did not know about Blu-Ray and I infact only found out about it from my Local Best Buy the other day..

Have you Heard of Blu-Ray Java? I had not not only is this the coolest thing ever it actually will enable users to interact with Movies and Games on Blu-Ray in ways we never thought or imagined. They showcased an XMEN 3 Blu-Ray that was GEOURGEOUS and while playing it you could highlight a character and click on them this would than bring up the actors BIO, screenshots and other information about the character or actor on the bottom section of the screen. They were able to select a few other features as well.

    Here is an example:

Now for all the HD-DVD fans I think not 100% sure as Im full behind the Blu-Ray wagon already purchasing a few movies and waiting patiently for some DISNEY stuff I think there is a a way to do similar menus and info from HD-DVD but unless specifically GAME console related you can not store any of the content if you do not have a HD if ever while you can in Blue Ray as all BR players have to have some sort of persistent memory.

I do not want to turn this into a FANBOY arguement just wanted to point out that BD-JAVA is a feature I did not know about, but looks to help expand the Market!

Cool, thanks for the info. That looks like a really good feature. HD DVD dosn't have this but it has a good feature on (which i can't remember) that does something like this (i think its something like advanced PIP)

Yes, I also think Java in the long run will prove to be a good choice for Blu-ray. But it isn't used to a great extent yet, I hope it will be better used in titles coming out next year.

actualy it can all be done on HD-DVD and indeed the extras on the existing discs are in excess of that found on blue-ray.

We should soon see Blu ray disc sales start to increase with all of the PS3s in peoples homes. Especially when it is launched in Europe.

This will be a great feature for the people that love the added content found on current DVD's.

I'm confused why you are talking about a blu-ray feature yet use a HD DVD movie to show how that feature is used. Yes HD DVD has this and from what I've heard from review sites it actually does it a bit better.

To the average user its pointless. I own batman begins for HD DVD and have never used the feature and probaby never will. But then again I rarely watch the special features.

I think that is a cool feature. I hope it will allow you to watch the comentary and the scene over, rather than watching the whoe movie with the comentary on!

    From the sites:

iHD allows interactivity to be authored into a data format using XML and ECMAScript (standardized JavaScript) as its interpreted scripting engine. In contrast, the competing Blu-ray Disc high definition video discs format uses BD-J for authoring interactive features and menus.
    DORFdad:

Here are the titles so far:

    BD-J Enhanced Movie Titles

(This list is known to be incomplete)
    • League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (enhanced menu, game)
    • Speed (enhanced menu, game)
    • The Descent (As of now only working on Sony Playstation 3, Samsung with firmware update and the Panasonic player, other players need firmware update)
