So, what happens next? From all of the sources of information I have, it appears that Blu-ray has a slight lead in current sales, after being behind last year. With the large number of Blu-ray models now in the market, and the huge lead in announced titles, it is almost inevitable that Blu-ray will be outselling HD DVD over the next six months at least. But this is not the whole story.
Last summer, HD DVD had a clear shot at dominance, with great looking titles from Universal and Warner Bros. and a player that was half the price of the only available Blu-ray player. While HD DVD convinced many of the early adopters, it didn’t really close the sale with the average consumer.
Now it is Blu-ray’s chance to win the format war, but to do so Blu-ray has to make the most of this window to expand their customer base. I predict they have six months to get the job done. Under this scenario, the tipping point will be Universal announcing support of Blu-ray, if that happens.

Microsoft is not tied to HD-DVD in anyway other than offering the HD-DVD add on drive. They are not on the board of directors of HD-DVD or anything like that. And throw in the fact that microsoft keeps saying they may still support Blu-ray....
So it really makes no difference if Microsoft and Universal are affiliated
