Can't Connect to PSN? Try this

Found this solution this morning. Tried it and it worked beautifully. Hope it works for ya

    http://boardsus.playstation.com/play...ead.id=1114625

I had been having difficulty logging into the playstation network the last couple of days. It seems the problem reared it's ugly head after I updated to firmware version 1.5 but can't 100% confirm this. My connection had been working fine since the second week of December when I purchased my PS3 and bugged out, like I said, a couple of days ago. Oh, I just want to mention that the last couple of days I was able to surf the web on my PS3 but unable to log into my account (didn't make sense to me either). I've been pulling out my hair trying to resolve this issue myself and finally gave up today deciding I would give Sony customer support a call. Basically they came to a conclusion that since their network seemed fine, that the problem must have had something to do with my internet service provider (Bell Sympatico). The Sony rep had said that they could have beefed up their security settings and/or made a few changes within their service which was causing me grief. He told me to give them a call and find out. I called Bell Sympatico and they told me that no changes were made whatsoever on their end and that the problem must then lie within my wireless router (D-Link, DI-624). They told me to give D-Link a call. So now I'm on the phone with D-Link and finally was able to talk to someone who knew what they were talking about (the others seemed like they were reading out of a manual and had no formal training). The person at D-Link quickly found a solution for me so I could get back onto the playstation network and seeing as how many people on the forums are having trouble with this, I'll share my solution (hoping it may help some of you as well). I didn't have to change any settings within my router as the problem was within the PS3 settings. I'll skip the basics and get to the important stuff:

On the PS3, go to Network Settings. Once you get to 'WLAN Settings' (assuming you've chosen the wireless setting previous to this), choose 'Enter Manually'. Enter your SSID, go to the next step. I used WEP here so I scrolled over to the next step and entered in my WEP key. Next, choose 'Custom' and 'Manual' after that. Here is where the most important step is at:

IP Address: 192.168.0.105 ---> I believe the range of the last 3 digits can be anything from 100-199. This was just my preference.
    Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
    Default Router: 192.168.0.1
Primary DNS: 4.2.2.2 ----> Changing the primary and secondary DNS #'s to these here, I was told were of the most importance. I didn't get an explanation but I didn't ask for one either.
    Secondary DNS: 4.2.2.3

Scroll over to the next step 'MTU', select 'Automatic'. Next is 'Proxy Server' and select 'Do Not Use', and now for the last step 'UPnP', select 'Enable'. Press the x button to save the settings and you then have the option to test them. So, if this does not work for you as it did for me, then you're on your own. However, if this helps anyone at all, I'll feel a sense of accomplishment for sharing.

I saw that post yesterday, tried it again this morning and NO! I'm going to flip the s*** soon if I can't get it working. If I can't get online, then there is no point to having the system (for me that is).

Brilliant, Cayman. Your detailed description resolved our problem with the 80028EA5 error. Thanks.

I GOT IT!! Here is my post on the PS boards (and pasted below):
    http://boardsus.playstation.com/play...hread.id=22245

Okay, for those of you that have been having problems connecting to the PSN lately and get the error 80028EA5 when trying to sign on and also get error 80710102 when either testing the connection or trying to check for a system update, this may be a big help. There have been many possibles fixes posted and they have worked for some people, but others like me tried them with no success. This one, however, worked for me and I tried every other solution over the past 2 days. How about some speculation first though?
I called Sony support today and the woman told me that they have been getting a lot of complaints about problems related to ours, and the engineers are looking into it. She also suggested that it may just be congestion from the newly released update and system maintenance performed. However, if it were just congestion, wouldn’t everyone be affected by this? Certainly, this is not the case as only a minority (which is still quite large) of the SAME people are reporting this problem. Surely, we would be able to access it once in a 1000 tries if it were just congestion.

So, if it is not congestion, can it still be the Sony servers? I believe that the problem lies within the way some people’s DNS (Domain Name System) is configured and is communicating with the Sony servers. This would explain how people can access websites on the PS3 but not the PSN. I believe that in the new update, something happened where DNS values are not “accepted” like they were before by the PSN.
The solution lies perhaps in the post that NexVision and nlong2 have been posting around here (sorry if someone else was the originator):
    -----------------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------
For those of you still having problems unfortunately there is nothing Sony is going to be able to do for you it is a ISP issue to bypass this issue you need to repoint your DNS away from your host. There are many services out there that offer free DNS routing for instance --- OpenDNS is one there information below.
Change your DNS settings to the OpenDNS servers:
    • 208.67.222.222
    • 208.67.220.220
Above information taken from http://www.opendns.com/faq/ offered free from them.
    -----------------------------------------------------------------
    ----------------------
Okay, here are the steps that I did to utilize this information to my advantage. I’ll try to make it as simple as possible:
    1) Leave your PS3 settings on automatic/easy (probably what you already had it set as before).

    2) Locate the IP address of your router. For example’s sake, mine is a D-Link DI-604 with IP 192.168.0.1
    3) Open a web browser (Firefox or Internet Explorer for example) on a computer connected to your router (The PS3’s browser might also work but I didn’t try that).
    4) In the address bar, type in the IP address of you router.
    5) If it asks for a username and password, enter whatever you set it as. If you never set one, check the manual with your router and it will probably give the default username and password. If you can’t find one, try username “admin” with no password.
    6) Once you get in, look for the setting to enter "DNS Primary and Secondary." (In mine, it was under “WAN.”) Once you find it, enter the values above for DNS (208.67.222.222 primary and 208.67.220.220 secondary). - Mine had 0.0.0.0 for both primary and secondary before I did this which makes me further believe that this was the problem. - Make sure to apply the changes.
    7) Check the connection on your PS3 and hope that it is working.

Best of luck, and thanks to NexVision and nlong2 for the information.
    Jared

EDIT Please check the site above for updates to this post - I'll be making the changes there instead of here

Was that Cayman's or mine that helped? I'm just wondering because I'm interested in knowing if it actually works for others or not - cause if the solution only works for me then I'm the outcast.

glad i aint having such problems.. the only time i cant log into the network is when the network is actually down for the entire country LOL. which usually seems to be happening once every two weeks. i have a wireless router too (trendnet) and i did all the automatic stuff on the PS3 and it pretty much automatically entered all those digits into the PS3. I use to get problems in the beginning when i first got the PS3 and router but a quick firmware update to my router fixed it all. many people over look the simplest solutions and they think the solution is far more complex, i can imagine how many people over-looked the fact that they can update there firmware on there router and more then likely it'll fix all problems.

Believe me, most people that have this problem have tried the simplest solutions...power cycling, updating firmware, checking settings. Nothing worked. The problem I think is rooted in the DNS servers of people's ISP's after the 1.5 update - especially not a coincidence since most people that are having this problem are Adelphia and Time Warner Cable customers (TWC which just purchased a large part of Adelphia). Now, this DNS thing has fixed it for almost everyone that has tried it. More than likely yes. However, this case is an exception.
