PS3 ISO Loader being beta tested?

    What the !?!....

We already knew that the PS3 sceners were cooking something when the earlier news from one of PDX's nfos came out. Then, it said that PS3 these ISO dumps would be playable soon. How soon? Nobody knew. Well, it seems that one of the latest nfos on PDX's dump says that an ISO loader is already in the works, maybe even as far as the beta testing stage.

Now while we can't tell a lot more since we ourselves don't know much, I've received word from a friend that unlike what others say, the application might not come out at all. Strange yes, but definitely something which has happened in the past. On top of that, the exploit is most probably software based since we haven't heard of any hardware modifications. This means that the PS3 firmwares are going to be as flaky as the PSP ones, which indirectly means that Sony will have the difficult task of securing the PS3 firmware. And looking at the PSP firmware scene, we can see all too well that Sony won't be having a lot of fun.

Anyways, here are parts of the nfo which make it seem that something is cooking:

While we don't support piracy, the fact that there could be software exploits in the PS3 firmware makes it seem that PS3 owners could see native homebrew sooner than we think. The fact that they were able to make an ISO loader means that they have been able to compile and run applications on the Game OS.

Again, this being found on an NFO means that we can't trust it fully. Call me a cynic, but I'll believe it when I see it.

Yes, the ability to pirate software and circumvent security measures should be an advertised feature

As much as I don't condone piracy, I have a great deal of respect for the "kids" that manage to unlock and re-write firmwares to make systems do what they want. Take the PSP - SONY should hire Dark_AleX because he's made the PSP way better than a stock model. It's almost a given that within two years, it will be possible to dump Blu-ray ISOs to the HDD and play them directly off it with a simple firmware "upgrade".

People are going to use this to get around paying for games. It's going to happen, nothing can stop it. No sense bitching about how lame piracy is.

What I'm looking for in this, is the ability to save my favorite games (PS2 and 3) onto the PS3 hard drive so that I don't have to haul a sh!tload of discs from one friends house to another. The Console itself is big enough.

Also, when they develop the PS2 ISO loader for PS3, then that's when I'll jump up and down and giggle like a schoolgirl. So many great Japanese PS2 games to be played...

    quite an impressive feature

whether or not it will work the way it is supposed to is another matter

having stuff like this made by the official company is pretty weird in my mind

i'm betting that despite their best efforts, a kid will come along and hack the firmware a lot better then the makers

in my opinion lets just leave it to the kids that know what they are doing when it comes to hacking firmware

The only thing about this is that if it works it probably will get shutdown by sony real fast with a security fix firmware upgrade. Plus I hope they are testing it on firmware 1.5 because that is what the UK is gonna get. The one thing that is gonna suck is if you are not able to go online when future firmware upgrades come along.

I agree with you 100%, Dark_Alex needs some hands on with gaming industry so that the consumer's voice can be heard!

Is suspect that, like the PSP hack-apps...you'll need to hold onto an older version of the PS3 firmware to make things work for you. We've already seen PS3's push of firmware upgrades. That will make for a more forced-upgrade environment in the future...either limiting a hacker's ability to play any new PS3 games he/she should wish to if they hold onto an older firmware...OR, not having the ability to avoid a firmware upgrade at all, without major headaches.

I dont know why everyone gets so wound up for this. If you get online they will patch it in no time and if you dont they will release the patch on some big name game.

Not quite true I'm afraid. There is now a 3.03 downgrader to 1.5 for the PSP now, which then allows you to go up to the latest 3.03 OE-C firmware from Dark_AleX. For a while, SONY were ahead of the hackers WRT PSP, but now they just don't stand a chance. That's it now - PSP is officialy blown wide open. The same WILL happen with PS3, it's just a matter of time. Sure, SONY will play the same game of upgrading firmwares and making games require certain versions, and they also have the fact that most PS3 will be hooked up to the internet. But, sooner or later, it will all be circumvented.

If the PS3 homebrew scene becomes half as good as the PSP homebrew scene then we are in for quite the treat. I was planning on keeping my firmware at 1.10 forever but then I had to get GT HD so I upgraded to 1.32 and I'm staying there. Hopefully the exploit will work on 1.32.

Just buy another PS3 and keep your current one in a box until the time comes when you can downgrade to upgrade!

i really hope that i will still be able to play games with my mates, because hacking a console stops you from playingn online, and if its firmware hack, then its a different story,,

You have to look at this from an odd perspective. Yes piracy is bad mmkay, it is bad for everyone in the long run. However one of the interesting aspects of piracy on the psp was the fact it enhanced the psp. I am not kidding you use a UMD game and you get at most 2 hours max out of it, shove the game on a Memory card and you get nearly 10 hours out of the psp. So piracy is not all "bad", it is possible that the loader could bring similar benefits like reduced wear and tear on the Blu-ray drive. All in all though I don't think piracy will catch on with the PS3, even trying to keep your psp up to date is annoying, it will be doubly so with the PS3
I'll buy a next gen console when someone produces a next gen game.

You can't connect to the PS Network without the latest version so... you will have to choose, online play or ISO loader? I choose online play.

You guys are forgetting the BIGGEST factor, disc size. Most PSP games can fit onto a memory stick even sometimes with 3-4 games on one stick and its easy to do. How the heck are you suppose to get the ISO loader to work and how would you even rip the games? Not everyone has a blu ray burner and looking to download off the net? How long would it take to get a 20 GB, 50 GB or even 100 GB games? Do you even have the hard drive space needed for it? There are SO many factors. Right now even if you get the ISO loader onto the PS3, you would need to buy the blank media which is between $25-50 and a blu ray burner which is $600. I guess you could work around this with an external hard drive but you would still need the burner to read the BD disc and rip it. We still have to see what future games will hold in terms of protection and if this does get cracked, we could see Sony switch to HDCP for games which would hurt some people.

I would do that but I am only 17 and my parents wouldn't let me do that. If an exploit comes out before Sony starts shipping their PS3's with higher firmwares than 1.10 AND the exploit only works on 1.10 then I would buy a new PS3 and sell my current one. I would be happy to do that but do any of you guys know what firmware the PS3's are shipping with right now?

    I later saw this post.\/

The following is just FYI. I don't condone piracy and still buy the games I love to support the developers.

First of all, Blu-ray disks don't cost that much anymore. You can easily get a 25gb BDR for under $20. As for burner, around $500 or less.

So let's do a little price comparison here.

    12 real games: 12 x $60 = $720
    12 BD-R + Burner: 12 x 20 + $500 = $740.

So to break even, you need to pirate at least 12 games. Then after that, for every game you pirate, you will be saving $40. Considering that this simple math was done using current prices and that BD-R and burners will become drastically cheaper in years/months to come, piracy is still the way to go for those less fortunate heh.

I wouldn't mind seeing an HDLoader for the PS3 though if it'll help with loading. That and the ability of storing multiple games on the HDD. No more disk swapping.
