more analysis on the data
http://www.digitalbits.com/#mytwocents

The first official retail tracking data from Nielsen VideoScan seems to show Blu-ray Disc outselling HD-DVD in unit software sales by a more than 2 to 1 margin, and the gap is widening. According to data reported in Home Media Retailing (you'll find it on page one of the digital edition available on their website) for the week ending 1/7/07, Year-to-Date tracking indicated that for every 47.14 HD-DVDs sold there were 100 Blu-ray Disc titles sold. Just a week later, ending 1/14/07, the same YTD tracking indicated just 38.36 HD-DVDs sold for every 100 Blu-ray Discs sold. What's more, tracking by Nielsen VideoScan since the inception of both formats appears to indicate that Blu-ray Disc is quickly erasing the sales lead HD-DVD enjoyed as a result of launching months earlier in 2006. On 1/7, HD-DVD's lead was 100 discs for every 85.05 Blu-ray Discs sold, while just a week later on 1/14, that lead had been reduced to 100 HD-DVDs for every 92.40 Blu-ray Discs sold. Here are the scans from the relevant HMR issues for purposes of discussion:

Specific unit volume numbers are not available, but one would guess they're still fairly low. No doubt much of the sales surge has to do with the arrival of Sony's PS3 game system in November. We'll have to watch closely over the next few months to see if these trends are affected by specific new software/title releases on both formats from week to week. Still, this data seems to bear out claims made by the BDA at CES, to the effect that their format was outselling HD-DVD as of December 2006 and that the margin could grow to as much as 3 to 1 in early 2007. It'll be interesting to see how continuing sales of the PS3 (and new dedicated players for both formats) impact these numbers as well.

I don't know how reliable these graphs are, but it looks like Blu-ray is winning almost all the comparisons (sales wise). Only the average sale price is higher compared to HD-DVD.

I don't see a clear winner until most/all studios agree on one specific format. Until then, sales numbers are just numbers.

The HD-DVD and xbots were crowing about HD-DVD outselling Blu-ray 10 to 1 early last year, before there was hardly any Blu-ray anything out, and a few months ago in the fall when Blu-ray stand-alone players and the first few Blu-ray releases were starting to come out, they were still screeching about HD-DVD outselling Blu-ray 3 to 1 and predicting the imminent death of Blu-ray. Now, the tide has turned and Blu-ray is outselling HD-DVD more than 2 to 1. Suddenly, the screeching and crowing HD-DVD/xbot crowd has gone meekly quiet, sometimes a squeaky peep every now and then. Soon, it will be a muffled murmuring...then total silence. Truly, silence from then will be golden.

02-01-2007 #8http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/news...s_Numbers_/456According to VideoScan, during the first two weeks of January, Blu-ray discs outsold HD DVD by more than a 2:1 margin. It should be noted that the two weeks in question saw only two new high-def disc releases -- both from Blu-ray ('The Covenant' on Jan 2, and 'Crank' on Jan 9).
January sales follow the trend started in December:
http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=117Blu-ray software sales have now surpassed HD-DVD for the first time the week of December 24 and they did so by an impressive 20 percent. The sales gap is expected to widen further in 2007 based on research conducted by Twentieth Century Fox and Blu-ray is expected to outsell HD-DVD by a 3.5-to-1 ratio by the end of the first quarter.
One of the driving factors behind the growth in sales is the PlayStation 3 (PS3), which was launched on November 17, 2006 in North America.

Well with all these number look great but you have to look down the road with all these releases and think
jk lol
man blu ray just hit hd-dvd with the left hook and hd-dvd is now left dazed now blu-ray is coming around with a right uppercut
have to whach out for hd-dvd secret weapon chineness players and some universal exclusive but what you know all to late why would you put something out on a format war(if its already riscky) if it looks like hd-dvd is having a hard time why would a company try to support them if you are just looking for money
but in weeks to come i believe store chains will hear about this and tell thier employees
(which tell the consumer) or just clear out that section (store/self space is valuable)
one question or one thing i would like to add if you own a hd-dvd player would you buy all those movie that are in the clearence bin/hd-dvd bin for $10
i feal this will allow people who dont want to risk getting in the HD format wars will finnaly will (not talking about ps3 owners)
also rember not everyone who owns a ps3 has an hdTV YET!!!!!!!!!! if you get a ps3 1 more reason to upgrade
very hard battle for HD-DVD

No brandname players are still far away. You can't make something from nothing and you can't make it any cheaper then how much you're paying for parts.
Most HD DVD and BD players are selling it at a lost as it is meaning that no one is going to undercut the under-cutter.
When HD Players components start to reach the point where there is acutally profit, then the Chinese, and taiwanese markets can see green. It will be a while before that happens. No one will buy a player that's both inferior at the same price.
So shake that Sixaxis hard because the you life is being drained fast. If you live, then the counter attack begins. If you die, it's game over.
HD Dvd has some life left in them. It's going to come down to how much punishment they can take before they get on their feet again. Universal is not giving up, so that's some welcome news. Porn is on it. And it's still cheaper...sorta...

i still dont understand the porn argument. They arent dropping DVD, and people wont be buying high def porn at a premium when they can get DVD's for much cheaper. Porns revenue from DVD has majorly dropped, and MUCH less will even transfer to a HD format. Porn is inconsequential in this battle.
