I'm getting more RAM tomorrow

I'm finally getting more RAM after using the horrible 32 MB of SDRAM I've had for 1 year now. It's 256 MB of SDRAM and I know that 512 MB is better but I won't need it for now because the CPU and Video Card aren't very fast. So I will set it up for Win 98 and there's a registry hack to make the OS use it all up before the SWP file is made. I heard that Win 98 sometimes doesn't use the whole RAM before the swp file is created.

I will clean the PC and run tests to see the difference in speed and the number of programs running at the same time. What difference do you think I will see once I upgrade from 32 MB?

32mb or ram? Um wow, that's defintally a few years back. Even 256 is a little outdated. I'd go w/ 512 are perferblly even a Gig.

The reason's I'm not getting 512 MB or even 1 GB of RAM is because it will cost me way to much money for it because SDRAM is not common anymore but still very much around. It would cost me $160-$180 for 512 MB. I know 256 is getting outdated but it's a huge improvement over 32 MB.

Yeah i know what you mean about it being expensive, My old PC had SD ram. i wanted to upgrdade to a gig, Had 512 Was going to cost $230 for another 512 of pc133 sd ram

So i waited and got my new PC when i bout the ram for it, 512 pc3200 DDR 1 got 2 sticks for $65 each :P, May go get another 2, or swap my 2 out for a 1 gig stick, and then go get another gig.

Ok I installed the RAM in my computer and everything works great so far but 2 problems. The First one is my SWAP file is still it 60 MB and that shouldn't be the case. The Second problem is Windows 98 doesn't see 256 MB instead just 128 MB of RAM

.

However I know how to fix both problems except The File I need to edit for Windows to see all 256 MB of RAM doesn't make sense, and I don't know what to do next! Please help

PS: My computer is much faster but that's not the fastest yet til these problems are fixed.

I upgraded from 1GB to 2BG of RAM for my notebook and it cost $300. But it was worth every penny.(I'm not rich or bragging just really happy that i finally got a new computer!)

Im not sure what difference you will se cause ive never had a PC with 32 or 256 mb of ram :P lol

I think if you reinstall windows that should fix the problem; but if you are going to reinstall windows, be sure too back up your files first.

How many ram slots, 2? Sounds like a reinstall solution as someone stated before. If you have 4, I would of said you grouped your ram sticks incorrectly.

32MB isn't a big upgrade, I didn't even think they sold them like that anymore.

OK I'm not going to re-install Win98 soon so I need another plan. There is a way to edit a file without re-installing Win98.

I have 3 RAM slots in my Motherboard and I got a 256 MB stick and put it in without any other ones.

Well I would but my money goes to gaming and I put some upgrades in this computer which will end shortly with time.

Wait hover... you said three? Try moving your ram to the other slot, and see what windows tell you.

I don't know why I would because the other RAM was 32 MB and that was the right amount for it. The Slot should would fine.

Plus my CMOS (BIOS type thing) says I only have 128 MB as well. I can't edit the amount ether so re-installing Win98 may not work. This is dumb

No I mean with ram you have to group it a certain way, otherwise windows wont recognise it. For example, my motherboard has 4 slots. My computer came with 2x256mb ram, one in the first, one in the second. When I bought my 512mb stick, I had to move the second one to the third slot in order to group it. I then placed my new 512mb in the new vacated 2nd slot. If I didn't do that, it would only recognise I have 256mb

Just try moving it to the other, you have nothing to lose.

Ugh I have to do this again

. Moving it to another slot may not do anything because I only have 1 stick and not 3 like you. I know there is another way but it would take me 20 minutes to do what you said.

20 mintues to open your case and move one stick of ram. It took me 5 to install a new AGP card into my relatives 4 year old pc? Isn't it worth a try vs reformatting your whole computer?

Yes it would but there is a written article that tells you how to fix it without moving your RAM around (which may not work) but I can't find it. I read one already but it didn't do anything for me.

uhhhh if u only have 3 slots and ur computer is old i dont think it can read single 256 MB. My old Dell is from 1998 and i have 3 ram slots in it too but when i upgraded my RAM from 64 MB to 256 MB i had to use 2x128 MB. Check wuts the max amount of RAM your motherboard can hold.

I was hoping never to hear something like that. I can't find that out about my Motherboard because I don't have a manual for it. I did find out that my motherboard can handel up to 1 GB of RAM so I think my motherboard can handle it.

Nope my Motherboard has DIMM Slots. So that means it should work on my motherboard. Also what's up with the "mate" thing?

PS: I cleaned my computer and CPU and there was a lot of dust!!
