It was of concern but we are starting to see the first DL BR movies now days, it looks like they have gotten over this little issue for now. While it is true that most Blue Ray movies have been single layer while most HD DVD movies have been dual layer, that also is the biggest single complaint about Blue Ray by video industry experts. A 30GB DL HD DVD has 5 extra GB over a single layer Blue Ray disc. That 5 GB translates into a considerable image quality increase. Consumers and experts have been begging the movie industry to switch to dual layer Blue Ray and go even futher with the quality. These cost charts demostrate why that is not happening. An extra $1 per disc is enough to make the movie industry go with the cheaper single layer discs.

The PS3 was just an excuse to iron out the early technological gaps for BluRay like price per unit and rolling out the fully featured discs.. By late '07, stand alone players should be more competitively priced to HD-DVD in time for the holidays and some real hot titles like Pirates of the Caribbeam, LoTR, and Harry Potter should be available for the scooping.
Meanwhile, 2007 will be dominated by BluRay sales announcements.. It was just a matter of making it a smart choice rather than an early choice. The PS3 trojan horse theory is working. The BluRay onslaught is about to begin. Casino Royale is going to debut a hot year for Sony.
