The PlayStation 3 should not be expected to determine the fate of the Blu-ray format alone. So says Sony Computer Entertainment of America President Jack Tretton. Speaking to Electronic Games Monthly, Tretton says “I believe we can complement the Blu-ray format, but I don’t think that we feel we can or should single-handedly carry Blu-ray on our back.”
Tretton also denies accusations that there are PS3s sitting unsold on US stores, a consequence of high prices and the lukewarm reaction to the first catalogue of PS3 games titles. “If you can find a PS3 anywhere in North America that’s been on shelves for more than a few minutes, I’ll give you 1,200 bucks for it,” he says.
“I can get any retail buyer on the phone with you and get them to verify that not a single retail location in America where there’s a PlayStation 3 on the shelf for sale. They’ve all been sold in a matter of minutes.”
