Phil Harrison: "no regrets whatsoever" with PS3

For the sake of accuracy in reporting, Phil Harrison replied "no regrets whatsoever" when asked by GameDaily.biz about Blu-Ray's inclusion in the PS3. The attitude the SCE Worldwide Studios President has taken with promoting the PS3, however, can be reflected by that statement: "no regrets whatsoever."

The guy strikes us as funny, but we (well, this writer, anyway) slowly realized, funny in a good way. The guy may have quite the history of saying stuff that end up mangled, tangled, and the butt of some jokes, that once someone wanted him to seal those lips. Given the chance (and a lot of time to talk), however, he sometimes comes off middle-of-the-road, even as he thumps the PS3 as his gospel.

Given the chance to thumb down the opposition, he doesn't even come off as aggressive, too arrogant, or completely snarky (although knowing the opposition in-depth may not be one of his strong points). The long DICE interview with GameDaily has to be left as a Via link, for you to take in the raw, but we'll take some snippets of note here as a teaser.

    * Still definitely "no regrets whatsoever" with Blu-Ray's inclusion in PS3, even if he describes the decision as "painful."
PS3 is still going strong...so is sony $$

Hah, it's like a "commitment". But you can easily spin to show a 'no confidence' on Sony's part.

I agree . i see no downsides/pitfalls w/ PS3 vs any new console to date. We got the baddest ass cpu ever heard of , blu-ray ( which from what i hear has hd-dvd dead to rights as far as studios & such signing on.) , & a core of multi generation games that people were playing waaaaaaaaay before the crap box was even in the works ( MGS4 , TEKKEN 5 , GRAN TURISMO HD , RIDGE RACER 7) , i know i left alot out but these are the ones right on the top of my head.

I agree 110%. And everyone who has played the PS3 has also stated teh same thing. They know (even previous xbots) ps3 is where its at. 1 Game will not make a console. But PS has tons of games!

sony's inclusion of blu ray is a good move for the company. its one of the good decisions sony made with the ps3 among a sea of bad ones. i commend phill for defending blu ray, however i think his (and sony as a whole) way of dealing with bad press is quite arrogant. never has sony admitted a mistake (and there are many). they really need to rethink their pr strategy.

eventually people are going to want HD TV's and they're going to want the best quality movies playing on their HD TV's.

When people find the ps3 can play bluray and games, it'll be killing two beuatiful birdies with one stone. the 360 and wii didn't do this similar approach because they are not going to be around for very long.

They would make me alot happier with blu ray if they output movies in 720p.
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure.

I don't see a reason why he would regret it PS3 is selling just as well as the PS2 did when it launched. Ken today announced 4million shipped which puts them on pace to meet their 6 million units shipped goal.

Resistance is doing great VF5 just arrived on the scene and Motor Storm coming on the 6th things are actually great over at Sony camp it's just to bad no one wants to believe that...

phil shouldn't have any regrets especially blu-ray is what makes the ps3 so much better than the 360 without it the ps3 would have been barely any better that it
it gets me so giddy to know how much money i save buying a ps3 instead of purchasing a BR player alone do you know how much one costs by itself? at least $1000
if anyone can find one by itself for any less than this please people tell me

I think Blu-Ray was a great decision. It's just a case of "you don't know what you need until someone makes it for you". Sony is a great product leader.

It's pretty easy to fill up 50GB of disc space with voice acting, video etc. And even if it's not being used fully at the moment it will be over the next few years.

I'm also pretty sure that soon people will be saying 50GB is tiny. If you think about CD space now most people think that. It's just about giving developer’s time to utilise all this newfound disk space...

well obviously people will have the need for more space dosent mather how much they can fit in a bluray disc today in 20 years people will laugh about it

even if it didnt go good with the ps3 they'll still say the same because if they regret putting blu-ray into the ps3 they'll look stupid!

I just got a ps3, but without an hdtv , you will not see thevalue of your purchase. BluRay is very fundamental and important in this era.
