The first PS3 I had it would make these slight "crackling" noises when the system was on and up to 5 minutes after it was turned off.
I exchanged it for a new one for different reasons. The new one has those same exact sounds still. I swear I'm not crazy, if you listen real closely, you can hear these slight "crackling" noises.
Anyone else hear this? Or am I going nuts.![]()

I bought a 20 gig unit at launch and I constantly heard the crackling noise you're talking about. Last Tuesday I traded in that unit for a 60 gig unit and I'm still hearing that noise. I haven't experienced any problems with either unit so I'm not worried about it.

Maybe it's caused by the cooling/heating up of the system. When metal gets hot, it expands, this could cause the crackling noise. I can imagine it's the PS3 metal frame inside that is making the noise, coming from the places where screws are attached.
It's kinda like the noises a hot car makes right after it's turned off.

Don't worry guy. Sony is a hardware design master. They are in my mind the best. So you have nothing to worry about. Just take care of your PS3 and it will take care of you.

yea uhh i never herd these kinda noises on any electronics. i think its time for me to turn the base down in my truck.
I like how I got an infraction for saying "Wiitard" when other people only get warnings for saying the F word.

the popping/cracking sound is hear is the console cooling off.
it wont hurt it just make sure that your PS3 gets plenty of air
and its in an open spot... not a in a inclosed space

Just sounds like it expanding/contracting as it warms/cools.

Is it coming from the PS3 itself or speakers?
If anyone is having this problem from their speakers and are still interested in a solution to that, than I can post up information to fix it cuz I had this problem, again through my speakers, and was easily able to solve it, but i'm not sure if anyone is having the same problem or if applies here...so post up if u need help...

ROFL no. I returned my original PS3 because it kept on having overheating issues when it should not have been overheating. I left it out in an open space. I would come home from work and play a game for not even 5 minutes when I got the flashing red lights and the system turned off. Weird thing was I never even got a message on the screen saying it's overheating.
Damn, the PS3's run pretty damn hot though.

My PS3 stopped making this noise after the first month.. The board just needed to settle.
