March 20, 2007 — Millions of Americans treat their pets as family. Now a growing number of pet owners are taking that love to an entirely different, more litigious level.
Reports of pets killed or injured by toxic pet food are on the rise and so are the stakes for animal owners and pet-food makers.
The pet-food recall initiated during the weekend by Menu Foods of Canada — covering more than 100 brands — comes on the heels of food poisonings last year that killed 75 dogs.
In January 2006, Diamond Pet Foods recalled about 20 brands after pets died from a toxic fungus, aflatoxin, in the food. The cause of the latest sicknesses from Menu products are still under investigation but may be tied to tainted wheat gluten in the food.
S&M NuTec, the makers of Greenies dog chews, is the subject of a $5 million suit brought by New Yorkers Michael Eastwood and Jennifer Reiff. They allege that the green chewy treats killed their 4-year-old miniature dachshund in 2005 because the material went undigested in the animal's intestine.
They sued after S&M NuTec e-mailed them a settlement offer of $8,587. The offer was meant to cover veterinary costs and the replacement of the dog, the company said in the e-mail.
Alan Sash, a lawyer at McLaughlin & Stern LLP in New York City who represents the New York couple, is seeking class-action status in a Missouri court on behalf of 10 pet owners in eight states connected to the Greenies poisonings.
"A lot of people feel that pets who are companions should have more value to them legally than what has been the case in the past," Sash said. "It's exceedingly difficult for the average pet owner to take a case like this to court, which is why we are seeking class-action status."
Sash said he expected hearings in the case to begin this summer.
In instances where pets have died because of negligence, economic value has generally ranged from several hundred dollars for a mixed breed animal to several thousand dollars for a pure breed, Sash said.

I always stick to getting the pup Pedigree as it's definitely the best. We've got a Black Labradoer though, and they're really sensitive to picking up things, so I'll take a note of this news.

Haha dogs are bad pets imo. Cats kick ass, becuase they are intelligent and social and think they are better than humans, and then its fun to prove them wrong (i.e picking them up and throwing them across the room) ...ahh, I love my cat Pawsey.

Wrong....wrong. How they heck did you come to that conclusion...? Its pretty much fact that Dogs are the more intelligent animal...I believe they understand somewhere around....500 commands or something? Not to mention they don't even need to actually have directions in order to know what the owner's intentions are (such as service dogs...do you ever see service cats?) And social....? What the hell....cats are SOLITARY by nature, except for lions.
Thanks for making me post off-topic to your off-topic post....
Now on to the topic....that's scary, I don't own a dog but I used to years ago, but when I do get another dog this just makes me feel less safe with store brand food.

I feed mine KIbbles & Bits, I didn't see that brand on a list so I guess it's fine.

And cats are more social, just this past week I had a heated discussion with a cat about politics...

Well Poe, even if you think cats are better dogs, the point of the post is that your cat can die the same way those dogs did.
=( And you shouldn't throw your pet....seriously.
Yeah, your dog should be fine. ^^ But not so sure about everything else... lol +rep

As long as the dog food is edible ie me eating it before my dog get some of the yummy than its fine by me. Other than that, my dog won't suffer from it unless I slip up on food assortment. I did technically eat dog food earlier as a child so my dog and me have similar tastes hehe.

Cats are for pussies. The people who think they're more loving, more intelligent, and most bizarely, MORE social, are really off their heads. Cats are extemekly independent animals, they dont love and appreciate their human companions half as much as dogs do. They're very dirty too. Kittens are cute though I'll swallow my pride and admit it. But dogs rule full stop.
As for the topic, how many people give their dogs canned food everyday? I get it the odd week to treat the pup, but I usually get the big bags of dry food because they're a lot healthier for emCAN I HAZ SOME MOAR GRAVY PWEEZ

I can pretty much guess what it is.
