We've seen smaller PS1, We've seen slimmer PS2. But will the PS3 be able to follow with everything that is inside of it? Will sony be able to compact the Blu-Ray player, will they have to drop something in order to make it slimmer, or will they let the consumer down again by keeping it the same size?
Slimmer is the way to go.

i dont know... but im content with the size of it now... its very stable and durable... and the only people i can see buying a slimmer one would possibly people putting them in vehicles.... the size of it now works perfect with my setup now... it fits in good beside the now unused 360... LOL

The technology is to new to slim down right now (Blu-Ray) and the Cell has only just got down to 65NM (maybe when it gets to 45NM).
Don't forget it has a hard drive as well, maybe it will use Ipod style drives.
I agree, 4-5 years minimum, but I'm sure it will happen, there is just not much point now.

i think in time they will make a slim one but its not needed right now. i personally don't think its really all that big but maybe im just different

Blu-ray is irrelevant here. The biggest problem with getting the PS3 smaller is to get the mainboard smaller. To acchieve it, they have to simplify board circuitry, so it is less complicated and takes a lot less space. The technology is to new to slim down right now (Blu-Ray) and the Cell has only just got down to 65NM (maybe when it gets to 45NM).
Take the Ps2 for example. It had the EE and GSX combined into one unit, that alone simplified the mainboard by a lot. In the PS3 we have much more components. The first step would be removing the remnants of PS2 from PS3 and replacing it with software emulation on Cell. The next - maybe combining RSX with Cell on one die? That would be a hard task, since there are so many transistors, no sooner than 45nm I think.
Maybe you could remove other units from the mainboard to further simplify it, who knows. My bet is, that eventually, we will get a slim PS3.Proud:

I'm sure they will eventually, but I don't consider it a "need" necessarily. I didn't like how much cheaper the slim PS2 felt in comparison to the first design (the flip up disc lid, etc) but then again, I like the way my PS3 looks like the monlith from 2001.

er...how many years has the PS3 been out again?
-

Yes they will probably do one when the sales start to slide down, because they are designed to pick up sales again. I bet they do make one.
However i wont get one because i already have one. No point in upgrading to something exactly the same, but smaller

They'll make a slim one when all the technolofy they have in the current one is made smaller.
Should be in 6-7 years I would say. Somewhere near the end of the systems life span.

^^^^ Just think how long it took them to modify the PS2. I agree with this chap, it will be near the end of life when we will all be looking forward to the PS4!!!

If there is going to be a slim PS3 model, then a price drop is usually there as well. It will take a few years before we ever get to see a slimmer model.

Will PS3 follow slim line trend?
I also answered no because the size of my PS3 is not an issue with me. Will Sony release a slimline PS3, yes but not for 3-4 years. IMO I don’t see the need to buy another PS3 unless mine breaks after the warranty is up and repair costs would be more than just buying a new one. Considering that my launch day PS2 is still working fine today, I’m not speculating this happening either.

They will most probably make a slim ps3 i wouldnt get 1 cause with ps1 and 2 i bought the bigger version so its kinda trend for me.
-
04-01-2007 #23
personally i don't care, i wouldnt buy another ps3 just so it can be smaller. size doesnt matter for me on a console. it's what it actually does.
-
04-01-2007 #24
I wouldn't buy one as I have full fat versions of the PS1 and PS2 so I want to keep my collection. However, slimmer means cheaper so it will be a good move.

I love the look of the PS3 as it currently stands... I just wish I could get a surround receiver that looked half as good (or as big, lol).
Until Sony comes out with the "sticker" version that I can just slap on the back of my LCD TV, I'll stick with what I have.
