Are they the same and will Ultra ATA hard disk drives work in the PS3?
I want to get a 160GB hdd but they only do them with Ultra ATA interfaces.

They are two seperate interfaces...Ultra ATA is also known as IDE, so you will only be able to use a Serial ATA drive inside the PS3! Just get a 120GB SATA drive for now, later when they come out the the perpendicular laptop drives then upgrade to one of those since those will be 200+ GB's.

They are not the same actually.
Heres some SATA drives for your PS3:

i dont think they are the same. it talks about how the ultra has perpendicular recording technology and sata has regular i guess. and since ur putting it in a ps3 i would go with what sony says it supports which is sata. but im not really sure if there are real differences between them just better safe than sorry

Perpendicular recording is just the way the bits are arranged on the drive platters:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perpendicular_recording
Right now only the Ultra ATA (IDE) laptop drives offer this, but they are suppose to have the SATA drive with this soon as well. When this happens you will start to see very large laptop drives because they can cram a lot more onto the same size platter.
Edit:
Here are a couple sites that offer 160GB SATA 2.5" drives that will work in the PS3:

(The Seagate one is 7200RPM so it will run hotter in the system)
