Yeah so im sitting here about to play some unreal championship 2 (awesome game got it for 5 bucs) Go to turn on my xbox and I get the three red lights. I tried unplugging everything and replugging. Tried different power outlets. My xbox has been freezing and I suspected that this would happen, so surprisingly I'm not freaking out about it.
What kind of gets to me is that I have taken really good care of my xbox. It's not like I did anything wrong to have it just randomly stop working on me. It's well ventilated, and all that stuff. Just a faulty product I guess.
Now my question is. What do I do now? What are the necessary steps to get my xbox working again, without having to pay money. My xbox was purchased march of 2006.
This sucks especially because of the upcoming halo 3 beta im looking forward too. I stayed up all night for the website to open to register for the beta, now i might not even be able to participate.
So guys what do i do?

But it wont detect the wireless controller and screen is black.I'll restart it again. Ok now Im just getting 3 red lights again and black screen. its looking like a very doom situation.

I'm sorry to hear it my friend..i hope that someone could help you.I know its out of warranty but i think you should call Ms and complain about it.They know that their systems has design flaws so they ought to replace it even if its out of warranty..If they want to keep their fanbase that is.I suggest you not to open it until you call them.Good luck..
Good "night" my baby...i will always remember you.I love you.

yeah I wasn't planning on opening it. One thing about my xbox is that when I bought it right out of the box the faceplate was cracked by the little door where the usb ports are and the case is a little dented. I called gamestop about when I first bought it and they said there was nothing they could do for me, except give me a madcatz faceplate of "the outfit". Will having a cracked faceplate and very slightly dented case be a problem if I were to try to send it in "if they accept me"?

You know what. I rather not use that trick. I think I will try my hand at calling them. I should not have to resort to some trick that shouldn't have to be used in the first place.
I don't think anyone should be using this trick at all actually. Everyone should be calling ms and report their faulty xbox so they know that this failure with their system is occurring.
Also my guess is that this is not a permanent fix. Correct me if im wrong.

95% of these problems result from the 360 getting so warm that it melts the epoxy resin which secures the chips in place which upon cooling (contracting) the pins are forced out of their seating. These tricks can work because they raise the heat of the 360 to a level where the epoxy resin melts again but this time allowing the chips to reseat themselves.
Are they permanent fixes? I would say that if you get your green lights after doing one of these tricks then providing you keep your 360 cool to the point where the epoxy resin doesn't melt again - then yes. That would mean given it a ton of ventilation (AV stand shelves can sometimes not allow the warm air to escape causing the 360 to recycle it continually and get warmer and warmer).
The towel trick won't void any warranty because it would be impossible to prove.

This is still unacceptable to me. I will not resort to a stupid trick to fix my 400 dollar machine.(unless there is no other option left) lol

lol it's all smoke and mirrors.
Seriously though, they will have a hard time defending a well known manufacturing defect which one could strongly argue there should have been a recall for (imho). I would tell them that if they don't replace it you will go with a competitor's console offering and refrain from ever purchasing any future generation of xbox. Be polite, but be firm. I think you have a good chance of being successful.

GartMon;
I was in the exact situation as you. My Xbox 360 was also manufactured in March of 2006, and my only advice for you is to simply get a replacement. I'd tell you to get a PS3 instead (like myself), but this isn't a debate thread.
Call Microsoft, have them send you a box; you're definitely in warranty, just be sure to have your serial number in-tact. And you're basically good to go. They'll send the box in about a week and you ship it off.

I'm probably not the best person in the world to try to persuade them, but I think I'll give it my best shot. If they say they can't I can always try calling them again.
Thanks for the input. much appreciated.

I say demand a refund then buy a PS3 a couple of months down the line.
-

LOL! Yeah, but back in the real world a) you can't demand a refund because you won't get one (in the UK for example you can only demand a refund with 28 days of purchase - known as your statutory rights), and b) all the money spent on games to date will be completely wasted, c) his friends list will still be all on 360's, d) he'll be bored until more games are released for the PS3

The ps3 doesn't have a little something called the Halo 3 beta. Which is the main reason im trying to get a working 360 ASAP.
And honestly there are no games that interest me on ps3 right now. Resistance I really want to try, but nobody I know owns a ps3.
Anyways, im only looking for input about my situation, so enough of this chatter about ps3.
Thanks for the.. ermmm.. input.. lol

I think the only problem with calling MS is that they'll send you out a refurbished one
And then that will brick on you
anyway sorry I can't help

Buy a new 360 and you'll get a new receipt. Keep your new 360, put your old one back in the new box, take it back to the store you've bought it from then ask for a refund. I don't know what the refund policy is in other countries, but in the UK the above method worked for me. I did it when my out of warrenty 360 broke. If the country you live in has strict refund rules, they'll definitely give you a replacement as you have a new receipt. So if you end up with two new 360s, just sell one on ebay.
