It was previously reported by IGN that Silent Hill 5was was under development by Team Silent, and had been for some time, corroberating rumors that the game was planned to be released late 2007 but was subsequently delayed.
However, recent interviews with the Silent Hill team sound as if the title is not only pre-development, but the entire concept of a next generation Silent Hill title still in it's very early stages: the systems for release hadn't been chosen, and it sounded like work hadn't even begun on the story.
Team Silent is generally able to produce Silent Hill games in a relatively short time, and people had said that it was in development since before even Silent Hill 4, and yet SH4 was released in 2004, and it's now 2007.
So where the hell is it? Where is the news? Why hasn't there even been an official announcement?
Is Silent Hill 5 actually almost finished, or where the previous reports false? Or have they scrapped the whole project and started from scratch?!?!

So there's no Konami event before then? Like Square' and Capcoms etc?
I really hope this game has been in development, and the last interview was just "playing dumb" to fool us. I mean wtf else have Team Silent been doing for the past 3 years?...

Lol...Silent Hill pwns Resident Evil.
I'm hoping we hear something, ANYTHING, at this year's "E3"...I'm looking forward to Silent Hill Origins, but I need to know something about SH5. Pretty much all we know is that Akira Yamaoka will be doing music once again, and that they are experimenting with a Daylight environment, instead of all the dark, creepy ones...That could end badly, but I hope Team Silent does good things with this idea. A little change is always welcome in my book.

Why do you say that?
Team Silent generally release one SH game a year, and it's now been 3 years.
At this rate I hope the game is released shortly after the announcement, otherwise this is in danger of becoming vaporware - not many games take 4 years to make, and certainly not linear survival horrors.
And btw, Team Silent had nothing at all to do with Silent Hill 0rigins. If they really haven't started on SH5, I cannot comprehend what they've been getting up in the morning and going to the office every day for.

Well Silent Hill needs to be refreshed IMO. While Silent Hill 3 was good, it really was just more of the same from 1 & 2. They tried a new direction with 4, but I am not sure that change was for the better. Too broken up, too action orientated, and too dream like to really feel like anything is on the line. It is possible the original concept and control scheme are getting stale, so they need to experiment with new ideas for developing SH5. It takes time.
Consider they seemed to be going with a new control scheme with Origins, but it appears they scrapped it. They may be just figuring out how to freshen SH5 along with all the creative design that has to go into a game like this.

I actually prefer it this way. I don't like it when a game series gets a new title every year...the quality tends to go down a bit, or not much really changes since the last installment. I would like to see a new Silent Hill game ever 2-3 years instead, that way we will/could see many new ideas, features etc, instead of maybe one or two different things.
And you don't have to worry about it becoming "vaporware." Unlike Duke Nukem Forever fans, we have the luxury of knowing our game WILL come out; Konami won't let SH5 just sit on a shelf forever, it's coming.

Gameplay innovation doesn't particularly bother me, nor does graphics to an extent - I'm in it for the story and atmosphere, and art teams, writers and v/o actors can usually get that done between years, so if a developer has a solid engine, I'm fine with them sticking with it an serialising the franchise annually.
But this is all a bit of a mystery. E3 is ages away, so I guess we'll just have to pull our hair out for a few weeks, forget about the whole thing, then have it suprise us in June.
