Well,
format wars are not good for anyone in the industry.
Now, evryone has been given a chance. And it's pretty obvious that Blu-ray is the only possible winner with
- more content
- better hardware (superior capacity)
- better sales
Now, in order that the HD generation takes off, the format war must be stopped asap.
Universal going neutral would be a killing blow, but a setllement between Toshiba and Sony would prevent Toshiba from losing face and evrybody would be happy.
Except the few buyers of HD DVD players (standalone or wbox addon).

I cannot see a settlement to be honest. Toshiba will fight there little corner till the cows come home. Toshiba must be feeling the pressure as the screw turns almost daily as new body blows hit.
You can almost feel the pressure SONY pushing in both Ps3 & its BD format. I would not be suprised the big anouncement universal makes some sort of switch within 3 to 4 months despite all the movies they are pushing out for HD-DVD.
There almost an air of last ditch ettempt to kickstart HD-DVD if all this fails to stimulate there flagging fortunes then it dies. Some say it will be a long fight I cannot honestly see it heading far into 2008. SONY will ramp up more pressure to kill HD-DVD quickly.

You just realized it's a last ditch effort? Why else would you hype up a movie on HD-DVD that will just end up launching on Bluray later on (Matrix)? When HD-DVD has only timed exclusives, and no big exclusives to back, it's proof that they don't have anything to stand on...
They're gonna try to lower the price to make it affordable for the average person, but without the content, who's gonna get it? Movies != video games... People won't choose to just watch Universal movies like they may to just play Sony games... Bluray is gonna win out... Maybe by the end of the year, but at the latest about halfway into 2008.

it's gonna take more than just a few sparkles to make the product shine. blu-ray has been releasing a stellar lineup from the beginning and it's just keeps getting bigger. i admit universal has some awesome movies i'd like to get my grubby hands on but not enough to buy HD-DVD... i'll buy the DVD version before that.

Toshiba is pushing an aggressive summer sales season. They're bundling cheaper HD-DVD players with free movies.
The great new movie releases are mainly on blu-ray though.

First off I will fully admit to being a Blu Ray supporter
But for the moment I would have to think that some competition in the market is actually a good thing. Its causing the two fighters to go at it on all levels, movies, hardware, and most importantly price. Sure, I will be more than happy when blu ray wins, but to let them have a monopoly this early into a new technology might cause some adverse issues.
Just my two cents

Format wars = less people buying movies. I'm unable to get the Universal movies I want because I'm not going to invest in another player and most of the people I know that would like to get a player are holding off because there is more than one format. So not only are they not buying movies on a next gen format but they are also not buying on DVD either. Can't see how this could be good for anyone really.
