The fog of mystery that has surrounded Fallout 3 for the past several years is rapidly dissipating. Yesterday, developer/publisher Bethesda Softworks revealed that the long-awaited role-playing game will arrive in fall 2008--some 10 years after Fallout 2. The confirmation came in the form of a teaser trailer, which all showed off around two-minutes of in-engine footage and confirmed several story and setting details.
One thing Bethesda did not confirm was which platforms Fallout 3 would be arriving on. Though originally developed for the PC, the game officially remains only a "next-generation" title. However, the fact Bethesda's last RPG, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, was simultaneously released for the Xbox 360 and PC and later ported to the PlayStation 3 led many to believe Fallout 3 would arrive on all three platforms.
Though Bethesda is still publicly mum on the subject, the question of Fallout 3's platforms was also answered this week. Not long after the trailer debuted, Game Informer posted the cover for its July issue, which confirms that Fallout 3 will indeed arrive on the PC, PS3, and 360 in 2008. Sources close to Bethesda said the information on the GI cover was accurate, but would not go into further details.
The GI cover also added ammo to the theory that Fallout 3 would be a major departure from previous PC Fallouts and the widely despised console spin-off, Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel. The magazine claims that Bethesda's goal has been to "reinvent" the RPG, which was originally a top-down turn-based title, into an all-new "open-ended RPG." Both Fallout and Fallout 2 offered open-ended gameplay with many side quests inside a larger, linear storyline--as did Oblivion.

^^Fallout 3 is a rpg...but I think it's a cross between RPG/RTS. Either way...I'm kind of excited about Fallout 3. I haven't played Fallout 2 since it came out, which was a long time ago. I've already forgotten what it was about.

As long as it isnt the crapfest that was Brotherhood of steel for the last gen consoles. My god that was horrible. I felt empty playing it, like I was walking around shooting and beating on things for no reason whatsoever.

Fallout's actually a turn based strategy. It's really a GTA on crack-- you can get addicted to drugs, become a porn star, murder everyone in the game--not to mention the overly gratuitous gore when you kill an enemy. You can set people on fire, blow their head off--you can even shoot their crotch. If Bethseda lightens up one bit, I'll be disappointed.
GIMME DA CROTCH!
...playing it right now and I became a pro boxer in New Reno. The Masticator just bit my ear off and now I have an ear in my inventory...

From op's article
"Was originally" kinda implies it WON'T be. I HATE And LOATHE RTS, so this better be what its supposed to, the most amazing RPG for a long time, and no *@#*(@ RTS crap, theres enough of that junk around.....next."reinvent" the RPG, which was originally a top-down turn-based title, into an all-new "open-ended RPG."Discipline. Obedience. Unity.

From the sound of the game the way it was envisioned it sounds like a post apacalyptic verison of Oblivion already. I mean it's free roam, fully interactive environments, multiple factions, corruption upgradable stats...
I wouldnt be suprised if they didnt just use the Oblivion engine again and change the environment and weapons.

Does anyone know anything about this game? So far I've seen it described as a MMO, a turn based RPG, action RPG ala Star Ocean, FPS RPG ala Oblivion, RTS, GTA open style game etc. In fact I think it has been described as being every genre of game that exists.

Basically, you have a main objective at the beginning (find the water chip, find the G.E.C.K.) from the starting place. Then you walk out into the desert and start doing random crap (ie. become a porn star, get in with the mafia, start an intercity war, defend bastions of civilization etc.) after awhile you will find the objective and then comes a plot twist that you have to deal with.
The most important thing is the freedom. The main story is kind of brief, but you spend so much time on everything else that it can easily eat up 200 hours. Everything was just fun and colorful, and it just meshed together.Last Gen: Weakest console = PS2, Strongest = Xbox.
Console that sold the most = PS2
Futureproofing a console means getting dev support, not adding $200 of useless technology.

Beth will screw it up easily!! HEED MY WARNING PLEASE, don't get your hopes up. IF it's good then fine, but knowing Beth they will completely ditch all lore, and just create a typical post-apocalyptic game.
BTW, if you aren't a fan of the game, and you are a mainstream gamer, you probably will like it. But otherwise you probably won't. If any of you knew what Cyrodiil in Oblivion was supposed to be like, then you'd understand how much they can screw up a game! Bordering on everything was inaccurate, or if not inaccurate it was just generic and crap.
I HAVE NO FAITH In BETHESDA, and I suggest you lose faith in them too, atleast when they produce a good game they can redeem themselves to you.[sigpic][/sigpic]

Yeah, but what made Fallout completely different was the turn-based & TEAM-based nature of it. Yeah, it was kinda open-ended in that you could go where ever you wanted (if you didn't get killed by enemies that were too bad for you & your team), but the battlesystem was one of the best things in it. If Bethesda makes Fallout 3 a futuristic, real-time version of Elder Scrolls, then they have one person LESS buying the game (me). Fallout is meant to be turn-based, I just hope they won't be changing that. It's what makes Fallout what it is (in addition to the black comedy & post-apocalyptic world), making it real-time would make it just like every other hack 'n slash/action RPG there is (in terms of gameplay).
