well, when xbox 2 does come out its going to be only a matter of time before LOTS of people get the console. and when they do get the console, the market will be as it is now with xbox...

-

That can go both ways. e.g. Halo 2 sold more copies than the original Halo sold in over 3 years in less than one month.

thing is though with the increased production costs of next gen development most of the smaller independent studios will not be able to afford to develop across platform and generation, and so they will either go for xenon or ps2 and xbox (or ps2 or xbox) and with the xenon’s very small base at first most will go with current gen consoles, with most of the smaller developers going with the current gen consoles less people will want to get the xenon at first and it could potentially get rid of any advantage of coming out first, and then with the ps3 having superior hardware and a stronger market recognition with more mainstream appeal and penetration though the playstation brand name the ps3 will easily win
that’s just one scenario though"Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former."

You forget that this is a problem with every system launch. Even the PS3 will experience it.
All system start at 0.
On top of this, at least in the US, the game developers and publishers have seen the Xbox outsell the PS2 for most of the year, including the holidays. This gives them increased confidence that the Xenon/Xbox2 will sell well.
To top it off, MS's moto going into Xbox2 development, is reduced development costs. Their goal has been to make it cheaper to develop for Xbox2 than it was even for Xbox, nevertheless PS2. This will go a long way toward atracting both big and small developers alike.
One final point. If the Xbox2 does indeed come out this holiday season, and the PS3 isn't out until the following holiday, this could give the Xbox2 a 5 - 8 Million unit head start just in the US. That would mean that by the time the PS3 launched stateside, you could ask why developers would want to put their games on it with such a small base comparitively. (Needless to say, this statement by me was just to point out how stupid the 0 at launch argument is. We all know that there will be a nice selection of games at both the PS3 & Xbox2 launch.)This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. I dont see how Xbox2 couldnt release this holiday season. MS has repeatedly said that they would be beating Sony out the door. By how much is still up for speculation but all sources point to Sony releasing in early to mid 2006. The most logical thing for MS to do is to get their console out at a point in time when its going to sell the best and give it enough buffer while the sony hype machine starts

Wouldnt you think the sony hype would start at E3? i know i would go hyper over E3 this year... especailly over the hardware innovation put into thw ps3, and i hope M$ dosnt make another [bleep] looking console, i really disliked the Xbox because of how it looked...

I sure hope Sony really starts hyping the PS3 at E3. This is basically them agreeing that the next generation is starting now. This will only help Microsoft's cause.

im sure sony is smarted than that, its like a visable trap if they start hypeing up their next generation... id say they would star putting on pounds of hype dureing the xbox 2 release, to give them a bumpy ride...

It will be hard to give Xbox2 a bumpy ride without having hardware actually on the market.

01-25-2005 #17No, it won't and never has been. Remember the Dreamcast? Remember the hype Sony started when Sega first released it? Thanks to that, people were neglecting the Dreamcast and effectively waiting for the PS2.

This might be a clever strategy, but I sure would have hated Sony for abandoning the PS2 in winter 2003.

The dreamcast had bigger issues than Sony hype. Sega could not afford to make any hype for the Dreamcast. They had very little going in terms of commercials, and they had almost no games.
Microsoft has the money for the commercials and if EA's 13 announced games are any sign, they will definately have the games.
The PSP is in a completely different market. If kids want a portable console, they get that, if they want a TV console, most will want Xenon. They are not going to want their parents to get them the 4 and 5 year old systems respectively.
Microsoft can pretty much with certainty that whatever they can produce in time for Holiday 05, they will sell. Assuming they can get the word out. Sony could even run counter commercials saying why buy it now when you can just wait and get PS3 next year, but all that would make them do is look like idiots. This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. 01-26-2005 #19They created enough hype for me to act like a giddy little school girlSega could not afford to make any hype for the Dreamcast. They had very little going in terms of commercials, and they had almost no games.
I bought the Dreamcast right after its launch, and it served me very well. =) I do feel that PS2's hype was much greater, though.
I wouldn't mind a few "Coming Soon" commercials. That would get my blood flowingSony could even run counter commercials saying why buy it now when you can just wait and get PS3 next year, but all that would make them do is look like idiots.
