Size of Memory Cards For PS3?
-
01-27-2005 #2
most likely Sony will use one of the variants of Memory stick, in fact it wouldn’t surprise me if they used Memory stick DUO pro's like they do in the PSP (which currently come in a range of capacity’s from 32MB to 1GB, and a 2GB one should come sometime within the next year hopefully)
64MB would be plenty though
wouldn’t it be cool to be able to use the same card for both your PSP and PS3 stuff though

yea that be pretty cool to have the same memory cards for both psp and ps3 that way you dont have buy extra cards for both systems and this way you bring your psp to your friends house or something with the memory card in it and you can play from saved games from both systems and only have to keep track of one card

ya that would be cool, and it would make the link cable from PSP to PS3 less needed

PSP and PS3 combineing wi-fi could probably happen... and it would be cool, to transfer music files downloaded from sonys connect service, to your Memory stick... would be an idea i would welcome with open arms...

i think it will come with like a 1 or 2 gig pre-installed hard drive. It would be cool if u could link the PSP to the PS3 for transfering files or playing psp on the big screen, similarly with the GBA and GC.

01-27-2005 #8If it comes with a hard drive, it's going to be a great deal larger than 2GB. The Xbox internal drive was 8, and the PS2's was 40. It wouldn't cost them much to implement one.

I dont think they can create a 40 gig HD for each PS3 cuz it would cost alot. I said it would come with a 2 gig and then maybe u can buy extra space....

2 gigs is ridiculous, and it will cost them a LOT less than what you're probably thinking. They're not expensive to manufacture, especially at a size that small [40GB really isn't that much these days]. We'll just have to see what they do.

indeed
and if they put one in i don’t think they would want to put one in that’s smaller then 40GB because the ps2 add on HDD was 40GB and it would look like there going back not forward and being cheap etc etc to some people
though really if you forget all of that i think a 20GB HDD would easily do"Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former."

yea a agree having a 20gb HDD in the ps3 would be more than fine with me

Way more than 20GB. Well, it actually depends. How much is a 60GB? And a normal computer has how many GB?
My computer's C drive has 108 GB. And it doesn't really cost that much. So I think a hard Drive won't be a problem. Just all frickin' depends on the price."This life is not real. I conquered the world and it did not bring me satisfaction." -Muhammad Ali

whats the point in having larger production costs (remember its likely that they will want to use a laptop sized HDD for it for space reasons, and they are more expensive) when 99% of people wont use more then 10GB ever

Actually, a 120GB HDD (I believe yours is "considered" 120GB, but since formatting takes away some space, and HDD's never are exact, I'm pretty sure yours was marketted as a 120GB HDD even thought you actually have 12GB less than that) does still costs quite a bit. The cheapest 120GB HDD (and it's on sale) is $125 CDN. With the current exchange rate, that's about $100 USD. Of course, if Sony was going to put HDD into the PS3, they would by in bulk and lower the price, perhaps a safe bet is 40% of the retail price? That's still be an extra $40 USD to shell out, or an extra ~$60 CDN.

IMO 60 GB is MORE than enough. I filled only 3 quarters of a memory card in 2 years, and thats both me and my brother saving on it.

Its amazeing how many games you can save on that iddy bitty 8MB memory card, just goes to prove that you dont need 80GB mommoth console to save your games. mine is the same, i always do a clean out of games saves i never play though. but its not a bad thing, it actually extends my games life span (strangely i find obscure cool again! lol). so if it was up to me, i dount think beeing able to play your music on a game is the coolest idea, like you can do on the xbox, id say if they had a choice between a 2GB memory stick and a 120GB hard drive, id go for the memory stick.

the good thing about a memory card is that its portable. portable as in if your friend has a PS2 and the same game you have, you can just take the memory card with you to his house and play your saved data over there...(even if your friend doesnt have the game, you can put the memory card in the game box with the game and just take the game box to their house)

You mean memory cards are more pratical than hard drive, thats absoulty true, you can buy memory cars for the Xbox, but there ugly, chunky and are absoulty [bleep] that you wil get lauffed at for having one.

you can save data on your HDD for ps2 i believe. i think you have to move it from the memory card to the HDD or something.

My guess is actually one of thoose 20 gig Sony thumb drives they are making, cheap to manufacture and alo of space on them, they are samll, and perfect for the next-gen consoles.
And the HDD's arent so expensive, Atleast not here, a 200 gb,7200 rpm hard drive cost about 500 kroners, thats about a little less than 50 american Dollars. And the price for HDD's will drop quite a bit by the time PS3 comes out.

Hopefully memory cards are just optional like Xbox was.
I love the HD because I can put my music library on there and play them while I am playing the game, which is the main reason my ps2 gets played once in a while and my xbox is played daily.
Only problem xbox had was HD wasn't big enough for me,I have a huge music collection and 8gb is seems like 2mb,just simply to small,But I put a 200gb drive in there and all is good.
Memory cards are ok for transfering memory from my system to a friends house but other than that I'd rather just have a HD instead having a bunch of memory sticks i'll end up losing around the house

i think 20-40gb would be good, cheap, offer good strorage, and this could help expand online play with downloadable content
