Hi everyone,
To start off here I am a huge fan of flight simulators. I am not talking about Top-Gun style aircraft shooters. I am referring to realistic flying trainers such as M$'s Flight Sim line. I enjoy these partly because I am a civilian private pilot and also they allow me to hone my navigation and instrument skills while not having to pay through the nose to actually go flying. Does everyone feel there is a market for a quality flight-sim for the PS3 along with joysticks to accommodate such titles?

Realistic Flight Simulation For PS3?
-
12-14-2005 #2
Well i don't really think that people would by a flight sim over all the other quality games. I think that a flight sim would get boring over time because it's missing
1. Story line
2. Action/adventure
but thats just my opinion.
But i must say that flight sim would look amazing on PS3.

Ok to clarify this post... I am not talking about a launch title flight simulator. I am more giving reference to a future product for aviation instruction or just plain fun software. I think with the advent of the cell and Blu-ray technology, the flight sim community could really stand to benefit from such a product. Also it would inspire creative peripherals for the PS3. Lastly, the storage capacity of the Blu-ray format could dawn some really spectacular graphics in the realm of flight simulation. Also, I realize that most console gamers are not aware of the huge community of computer simmers that fly regularly in large groups on the internet. We are talking about formation flying, virtual flight schools airlines ect. ect. I would like to see more people able to join the exciting world of flight simulation via the PS3.

I have to say, I'm more into my flying games (i.e. Ace Combat!) than flight sims, but when I have had a mess about with a flight sim, there is something quite satisfying about taking off from an airport close to you, flying over where you live, and then landing at, say, Heathrow airport! Boring at times, but hot without its thrills.
Given the right method of control, I think the PS3 and its ability to precedurally render landscapes on the fly based on satellite and topographical data would make a fantastic look flight sim.
Would I buy it though....no, 'fraid not...

Are we talking something like A.C.E. Combat or something like MS FLight Sim?
I myself would like a Red Baron or ACE combat game. Those are pretty good.

Could you imagine the furore created by the appearance of a flight simulator on a mainstream gaming device like the PS3? You can just picture it now - a prospective suicide bombing maniac purchases a copy of Flights Over Central London, memorises the locations in the game then hijacks a passenger jet and flies it into the Houses Of Parliament wiping out Blair and his comb-over friendly sidekick Brown.
Jack Thompson will be standing there, his arms folded like a magnanimous Sonic the Hedgehog, muttering the words 'I told you something like this would happen' ad infinitum.

See, everytime someone mentions flight simulation software, someone has to mention terrorism. I think this is a very close-minded approach to a very useful application. I say "useful" because I've had my life changed by such software and I've seen countless instances of troubled youth finding a outlet in learning to fly via flight simulators. Such software, can help someone discover aviation and educate them on the very respected feild of aviation. I think to minimize the good these programs do by saying that they are a terrorist training tool is a very ignorant thing to say. Flight simulation software has one of the largest online communities in the history of on-line gaming. It boasts billions of downloadable add-ons made by users of the software. It has an extremely active online community who participate in creating a complete virtual aviation industry to include virtual airlines (VA's), voice and radar controlled live air traffic control (ATC) services, aircraft and scenery designers, add-on software design ect. ect. My overall point being, flight simulation software has brought opprotunity to those people who may not have found a way to contructively learn and hone various skills. It has provided an eye opening experience for millions of users and those users have built one of the most robust and mature online communities in gaming history. The actions of a select few that use the software for malicious intent are a non-issue. Keep in mind the people that attacked the World Trade Centers in my country were trained in a real flight school and in no way, shape or form, can be contributed to the use of flight simulation. By saying that you are also saying that by playing any shooter on a console that people are training to go out and shoot people. Thats rediculous. Thanks for letting me get that off my chest.

This is exactly what I was hinting at in my post, which proverbially flew over the heads of everybody. Because of the non-linearity offered in flight simulations, the freedom to explore and do anything you want, having a game like this on a console that's owned by the vast majority of console users will bound to be targeted by people like Jack Thompson if an event similar to 9/11 happens again.See, everytime someone mentions flight simulation software, someone has to mention terrorism. I think this is a very close-minded approach to a very useful application.
I acknowledge the fact that flight simulations are educational tools and it'd be great to see them available to more aeroplane enthusiasts but the ramifications of selling a detailed flight simulator to the largest console install base (there's bound to be a few 'unstable' folk amongst them) can only serve as ammunition for Jack Thompson and other anti-everything crusaders of his ilk.

Go read about 911 properly..stop watching tv and use your reading skills..

12-21-2005 #17I am a big fan of all flight sims and fps, I think that they should not only come out with a flight sim, but make it more of a grand theft auto style type game. Work hard to get you licence, start small and grow to flying boeing 747 and later join the military. Have a wide selection of career choices. The ps3 would defenatly be able to acomplish this. Map type like gta (cars, buildings, other planes). The hole world is the map. Have no fly zones, realistic weather(hurricanes). Be able to land get out of your plane(fps) go in the airport buy shit, eat, talk and manage crew. Have a head set hook up to talk to air traffic control and other pilots and command co-pilot and crew. Im saying have a huge interactive enviroment. For a bonus level that you have to earn, maybe say a trip to the moon, nasa, space station. That would be totaly wicked. I believe the ps3 could acomplish that. You could also have a variaty of different camera's when flying(i.e. fps,3rd person, side view, fly buy, civilian piont of view, on radar, even have a passangers piont of view. Some flight sims have the cock-pit down pat,but half the instruments dont work, so make every detail stick out on the control panel with full control. Make it so the player actualy has to learn how to fly the plane and read the instruments. It would make for an educational game, fun, exciting, and very very realistic. A game like that is the future to any new game comming out. So realistic that there is cabin pressure, realistic turbulance, gas, oil. It could be done and I hope it will be done,What you guys think?

One of the best flight simulators out there is MS flight simulator 2004 or 2005(cant rememebr the exact year). and if there is a good FS it will be on the 360 not PS3,
but I think the PS2 has a flight Simulator but it only has Military jets, the name is Aero Elite Combat Academy its one of the best Flight games on the Ps2, I think they will make some thinkg like Aero Elite on the Ps3 but nothing like a real Flight Simulator.

Ya, Iv played Aero Elite Combat Academy. Its ok I gues, but when it comes to controls...they suck. In gameplay I felt as if I was piloting a boeing 747 instead of a f-18. Its ok for the ps2, but I think they could have done a better job

Trigger,
I like your ideas for flight simulation on the PS3. A totally encompased enviornment. Thats what Im talking about. Being able to supply fun for all types of people in one game. I was talking to my freind the other day and discussing this type of cross-genre gaming. My idea was take a game like EVE-Online (A space empire building game) and being able to land on planets then the game changes into a FPS style game like KZ. I have never really seen a game that can truly cross-genre. GTA games hint at it but both versions of the game (driving and shooting) are watered down becuase of the limitations of being able to put more than one engine in a game. Now with the advent of the PS3, could it be possible to include multiple engines in a game for a quality cross-genre experience? Interesting Idea.

Ehh...I don't think there would be that much money involved far as making money goes if you made a realistic flight simulation game for the playstation 3. If they did make one they would have to have the best graphic quality that the playstation 3 can pump out, a variety of planes ranging from all the years of flight. The number one thing you would need would be fighter planes and war simulators. Otherwise I doubt you will see one. I wouldn't mind a realistic flight combat game like Ace Combat (which I have for the ps2), but I want graphics, awsome physics, variety of war planes and graphics. Oh ya and gameplay. lol.
