Seriously you mean to tell me that all the partners in the bluray camp coudnt come up with a measly 150 million to keep paramount. This war could have been over with exclusives like transformers coming straight to bluray.
Now us bluray owners have to worry about hddvd coming back from behind with all the finance backing they get from Microsoft. I mean did paramount not reach out to the bluray camp and offer them this same exclusivity for a price, and did bluray turn them down? Dumb![]()

Paramount sold out to HD-DVD ~ simple as that.
I probably will still buy their movies, but on regular DVD. For the sake of a couple of blockbuster movies, I'm not going to buy a HD-DVD player just to watch them, and I'm sure most people are feeling the same way.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

I think he is saying that he can't seem to grasp why the blu-ray camp didn't offer more money to them since they could afford it. I think there is something that we are all missing since I don't think any one on here was directly involved with the deal.

I don't know exactly how Sony does its 'business'. But I think its pretty apparent that they aren't in the game of 'bribing companies to choose them' technique. Since M$ has been doing this with developers, and yet I haven't heard of Sony doing anything like this for game devs.
So I am going to go out on a limb here, and say they Sony is all about making good products, that are high quality to win wars rather than throwing money at companies to bribe them to join their side. They are probably more along the lines of good quality products, than whole can throw the most money at companies to 'pay off' their support.
Sony = Good old style of marketing. Quality products that give the consumer what they want.
Other companies IE Toshiba/M$ = All about the dirty way of business, greasing the wheels of companies and using tons of money to buy their support. Rather than having businesses choose their company's products for their specs and quality.

I think Die hard is Fox I could be mistaken though. I know I just read about it so its in one of the recent threads in here. As for me I only buy blu-rays now, after seeing them it is hard for me to go back to regular DVD's lol.

Well the HDDVD forum is an old organisation and has resoures of its own plus it has major cash risch backers in Toshiba and Microsoft.
The blu ray forum is effectively Sony, fox and so on are in for the ride they dont put much of their own money in just like universal, paramount etc wont be putting money into the HDDVD forum.
The problem is Sony is spending all their blu ray cash subsidising the PS3 to get it into people's homes.

Business is business. If Blu-Ray had offered them $151million they would have been exclusive to them; it's nothing personal. Plus, you're speaking as if Blu-Ray has a God-given right to own the HD market; why is that?
I agree with the OP, this is a major feau pas on Blu-Ray's part and a really shrewd move on HD-DVD's.

I bought the very first hd-dvd stand alone player at launch. Due to this i probably have more knowledge than most of you. Here is the reason they did it - they never really supported blu ray. In the begining - before either format hit the market, warner, paramount, and universal were all hd-dvd exclusive. Later they changed to neutral. They still supported hd-dvd over blu ray as supported by some movies never coming out on blu ray and many that have come out look worse and have less features - less time were put into them. The neutral switch was just a money grab. Now that toshiba is subsidizing this money, paramount has moved back to the format they always supported. Is warner next? why no v for vendetta or matrix on blu? because they cant add features? we all know that studios love selling the same regular dvd with like one extra feature over and over to the same people......

Paramount made a business decision to be paid to drop their sales of Blu-ray titles and to become HD-DVD exclusive ~ what part of "selling out" don't you understand?? Nobody is saying that Blu-ray is the Messiah of the High Definition market.
Whether or not it is a good business decision on their behalf, only time will tell. There is no way you can say Paramount "shopped around" to see if they could sell their brand to the highest bidder. Obviously they were approached by HD-DVD (in one form or another) and were given an offer to drop the Blu-ray part of their sales for a price. Although heaps of people are upset by this decision, you can't criticize Paramount's short-term financial decision for themselves ~ they were offered a lot of money for their product, and they took it.
No dramas or problems for Blu-ray, as it is a FOX title ~ the four DIE HARD movie titles are all slated for a release later this year![SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

Transformer is not the be all end all movie. It was OK, it attracted a lot of attention since it was made on the cheap (by blockbuster standard) and generated a huge return. One movie aint going to make much change to the landscape. Sony have the Spiderman trilogy coming out in Oct and Pirates 3 coming out just in time for X'mas. The blu-ray shelves will look might attractive to holiday buyers.

Finacially, Paramont was smart to take the deal. Look at the best selling HD/Blu-ray movie out now. "300" sold 300,000 units combined. if we goes with the trend that blu-ray out sell HD at 2:1 then 100K would be HD and 200K would BD.
Since hi-def DVDs have a MSRP of about $29, the retailers would get it for about $15 (since they routinely discount them to ~$20), the ditributers probably gets it for $10-11. So you figure that the studio will probably get about $5-$8 net profit per disc.
It would take 100 titles with such strong sales to generate 150 mil and there's no way they can do that in the next 18 months.

I dont see why its such a big deal. If you have a ps3, and you see a blu-ray film you like.. buy it.. who cares? If HD dvd wins is that movie going to self destruct? No. You think too much about this. I have a few blu-ray movies and I enjoy them without worry. GO out and buy some films if you like them and enjoy them.

From what I understand the deal was well into the works before the Blu Ray camp found out about it and could try and counter it.
