    Tera-Discs To Blow Away Blu-Ray and HD-DVD?

Read the article below. But i believe we won't see this until another 5 years or so because the cost is probably huge! Just look at the cost of TB harddrives.

Who in the hell is going to use that much space? It's pointless! "for now at least... maybe in another 10 years from now..."

    Seriously. That is too much...

I could care less about the movie industry but imagine the possibilty for gaming? Well I hope they do get the 500GB BD out and run a firmware update to the PS3 so it can read them.

I mean just think with 500GB-1TB guys like Konami, Capcom, and Square could literally sell ever installment of their franchises ever on one freaking disc. Now that would be cool.

You're Wrong, It has a theoretical maximum of 8 layers, 8x25gb=200gb.

huh? Not for at least 10 years.

And BTW: I think that this Tera-Disc thingie is obsolete now. We have PCD in the plans now: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protein-coated_disc - 50 terabytes of storage. Who needs TD again?

Yea DVD's have been aroun for maybe 12 years and Blu-Ray is just starting to pick up and become affordable so I don't think this new format will catch on as most people will have just become comfortable with the Blu Ray format.

This is up there with hologram discs, bio disks and a host of other "experimental" storage capcities out there. The only thing that will push these discs into existence is a commercial need for them. Right now Blu Ray is still new and will replace DVD for storage as the price goes lower.
People will not need this for another 10-15 years at the most and by then, there would be newer technology out. Technology is moving at a blinding pace and by the time Blu Ray gets replaced, Tera Discs will be obselete and we will be using something that probably has 5 TB or more.

TDK just wrapped up their 8 layer 200gb Blu-ray not too long ago, there are numerous articles stating that Blu-ray discs can go well beyond 8 layers. So 500gb's is not far fetched. I wouldn't be surprised if we starting seeing terrabyte BD's in the next 2 years.

With a single sided Blu-ray being able to store 100GB data, Blu-ray should last even if we have a new newer HD resolution, I believe HD content as it is now, will last longer then DVD
    Tera Discs aren't needed yet

No I mean because in theaters they have the films in resolutions far beyond that of 1080p, so they could hold all of the film on one disc, rather than using a big ass film real to show movies.

only way I see this happening is if this is aimed @ some type of target like a business to back all their data up, if this 1 Terabyte medium is ever going to reach a house, they better have some new innovative way to enjoy content that would justify the wopping amount of space....

200gb's..not 100 and that is barely pushing the envelope. There already is a 500gb's Blu-ray in existence. Whether or not first generation blu-ray players can read it is another question altogether

This is nothing, in 2009, the creators of the Holographic Versatile Discs (HVD) will be rolling out 3.9 Terabyte discs to the public.

Nothing will be replacing Blu Ray for a very long time.

The HD DVD format is behind in technology and will not catch up. 500GB blu ray discs do exist, as do 200GB discs.

All this talk about holographic discs, downloadable content, replacement of a generation yet to pass..... get real and come back to planet earth. We've to yet get the public weened of DVD! Never mind get them onto HD formats.
