I keep reading that if you have FW past 1.50 you can't do certain things. I just got the new psp slim, does anyone know what I can do with it if I want to use homebrew apps? How gimped is it?

Simple
With the old PSP, you need FW 1.5 to run non-Sony code on the PSP. This is what lead to the development of homebrew on the PSP, and people run custom firmware to keep their system up-to-date with the latest Sony firmware while still being able to use homebrew. Currently the Slim PSP's firmware hasn't been cracked yet, but it was just released so it'll probably take a little while to get homebrew running on the Slim PSP (but progress is being made).
