First off.. I am a huge BLU RAY fan and I already have a ps3 and 68 BR discs..
but I don't want to wait a year and a half for some of these flicks that are only coming out on HD DVD (for now anyways..)
I will still buy way more BR discs than HD DVD's .. I just wont have to wait out the war..
I figured it would be cheaper than a hybrid player down the road so I got the 360 add on for my 360 Elite and got 5 free HD DVDS for free.
anyone else gone both formats?

So I finally broke down and bought the 360 HD DVD add on...
I own an XBOX 360 Elite, and a PS3 60GB...
I hate them both equally for different reasons.

I'll stick with Blu-ray no need in helping to drag out the format like yourself

Agreed T2OY. No need to give them an ounce of satisfaction for us to go HD-DUD on them. Let's face it, HD-DUD was on the cusp of dying. This last minute deal with satan helped them keep their doors open. For what? Three titles that I can surely wait for. I loved Transformers. But, if these A*Holes want us to by "DVD" then they can kiss my Blu-Ray A**. Too many good BD on the horizon before the holidays to waste money on what are soon to be COASTERS of the 21st century. HD-DUD is flat lining soon.... I know you couldn't wait my friend. But, hang in there. We can't keep giving them crumbs to hang on to and pro-long this stupid "WAR". Microsoft wants them BOTH to fail so we can all just Download this crap from them exclusively. 68 BD is a great collection. Don't help the other format... and hurt yourself.
SAVE the $$$ for games and BD...

Yeah. People who own only 1 format miss out on a lot of awesome titles, on either side of the format war.
I have had both since November of last year. I had a HD DVD player before I had my PS3! This is the 2nd HD DVD player I have owned as well, the first was the first HD DVD player ever made, the HDA1, which was great! But when the XA2 came out I got that, it was about 1200 dollars when it came out! Its SUPER high-end. It is one of the very best upscaling DVD players in the world and it is the best HD DVD player on the market today by a long shot.
Like my signature says, combined I have almost 150 HD DVD and Blu-ray titles, with the amounts being about even on both sides. HD DVD has a lot of VERY good movies that Blu-ray fans are unfortunately missing out on. Same goes for HD DVD fans, they miss out on a lot of amazing movies too. Thats why I bot both from the very start.
HD DVD must haves are Bourne Series, Children of Men, Matrix Trilogy (doesn't really count cause its coming to Blu-ray later), The Thing, Hot Fuzz, Sean of the Dead, The Hulk, King Kong (not too great, but the transfer is amazing), Transformers!, Syriana, etc... I could go on for a bit. But you get the idea.
The list for BD (personally for me) is huge as well... so yeah, the moral of the story is that if you only own 1 format, you miss out, end of story. Now if you care about that or not is different, I did.
Edit: I heard decent things about the Add on, but the reason why I didn't recommend it to anyone so far really is because it lacks full audio support and no direct HDMI feed.

thats pretty much me.. I have 500+ regular dvd's and a good start of 68 Blu Rays and 6 HD DVD's
depending on the war outcome.. worst case scenario is I have a bunch of high def movies I have to watch on my 360 or my ps3. (neither of which I am getting rid of)
I just love to buy movies, and the "war" is getting old.I own an XBOX 360 Elite, and a PS3 60GB...
I hate them both equally for different reasons.

how would you rate the hd-dvd add on???
i already have 1080p 42"
had ps3 took it back
have potc 1-2
loved them
in 2008 ill have both

Gonna have to agree with you on this. I decided to get the add-on because there a lot of movies on HD-DVD that I wanted to get that weren't coming on Blu-Ray, and getting a total of 8 free movies to start wasn't bad either.
I was aware of the lack of full audio support, but I won't have a surround sound system for a while, so it didn't really matter to me. I'll probably get a stand-alone HD DVD player when I do, tho. My 360 isn't connected via HDMI, either, so that's another thing.

Yeah, definitely...... both format users are the only current winners of the war because we don't have to wait. I guess a better way to put it is we aren't casualties.
Anyway, the Add on is fine if you want regular surround sound in the future, but you are limited to that. But whatever, its peoples choices, not mine. If you are going to be having regular surround sound, then its a fine thing.
The inclusion of the XA2 being one of the best upscaling dvd players ever was also a big selling point for me.

Is it any good though? does it upscal any better than the 360, what are the pic pic comparisons like?
-
09-14-2007 #12REFLEXGuest

What the XA2? The XA2 is considered by the HD world to be the best hd dvd and upconverting player around basically..... I can't give screenshots since I don't own a 360, or the add on.
Its upscaling ability compared to the 360 add on is superior in every way possible. The XA2 uses the Silicon Optix chip in it, the best processor for upscaling in the world, only a few select high end models use it, Oppo players use it as well, but those aren't HD DVD players. There is a reason why it was 1200 dollars when I bought it. Its high end, not for the casual HD DVD watcher.

Well, like I said I'll be getting a proper surround system once I get the means to... it's not so much the money as much as it is the fact that my room is tiny and have no room for the speakers, lol. But once I correct that problem, I'll be getting a standalone HD DVD player and a surround system to do all of my HD equipment justice (it bugs me knowing that, despite my TV, I'm not getting the full HD experience
)

You have betrayed the Covenant! How dare you forsake the Blu-Ray Clan!
Hand in your pen!s! you have brought shame to yourself and your family!
Commit seppuku now! disgraceful Gaijen!

what's wrong with just getting DVD and upscaling?
what's the point in having 2 hi-def formats?
I rather stick to one (cuz it'll seem odd having dead technology for the sake of seeing 4 movies in HD)
oh well..

well idk about all that.
but I'm a simple man
I'm very picky about my wallet and what I buy (that's why I'm always gotta be sure I'm dead set on what I want)
that's why I view things such as these as a sin
buying a HD-DVD add on for what? so you can see Transformer in High Def
and the Bourne trilogy in High Def as well? pssht I need more than that pal.
sorry but post like these remind me how vain some people are

Do you buy Blu-Ray movies? If so, would you have bought a Blu-Ray add-on for your PS3 if it didn't have it built in? Just asking, because I figured you have an HDTV after mentioning upconversion in the PS3.
And on the same note, why buy next-gen game consoles? I mean, gameplay isn't that different, right?

Until one format (we know which one) stops being produced and there only exist an add on (while it works). Maybe at that point a dual format standalone will be cheap.Yeah, definitely...... both format users are the only current winners of the war because we don't have to wait. I guess a better way to put it is we aren't casualties.
I don't plan on contributing to prolong the inevitable. Especially for one or two movies (Bourne, Transformers)
I'm more pissed about not getting Heroes in HD.

If we all thought like that, We woulda never have left the 2d side scroller games.

moving on...
If Blu-Ray was a add on I probably would not have bought it simply because I'd say to myself "what's the point? I don't have a high-def set up nor do I have the proper surround sound for it. I'll stick with regular DVD because it has all I need"
I rarely buy add ons anyway (if you count the adaptor and headset for the PS2 that's about it) because I see them as trivial things that were conceived half-assed (see 360 & PS2) and weren't given too much thought to the original design and are thrown in for the f*ck of it
I'm just following the same rules as my PS2
It has a DVD playback so I may as well put it to work
(bought close to 20 dvds soon after)
same now for Blu-Ray
It plays High Def? well why not watch some flicks in HD
Overall I don't really care I just wanna watch my movies and play my games
I don't need them in ridiculously high setting of 1080p and 7.1 surround sounds and 60 Fps (on that note. Does it really f*cking matter if Killzone 2 is not 1080p in 60 FPS!? the game looks awesome as it is folks no need for overkill)
Honestly folks We've been playing in Standard definition for a good chunk of our lives, HD just came into it why the sudden rush to have everything maxed out and have quality to the most highest caliber?
It's over the top ego trips which I once again blame on people's vanity
-
09-14-2007 #21REFLEXGuest

(also, your argument again, is weak, are you saying you don't want high quality movies or games? you will settle for knowingly lesser quality?)
What the hell are you talking about? Ego trips? Vanity?
Whats this talk about vain? None of these things have any relation to the definition of the word vain.
01. They all have purpose and are not for "style" or nothing else other than to show off.
02. No one is conceited about it, we are just really happy with what we got and why.
03. And they all have a direct and known and useful and practical purpose.
Your use of the word vain is... how should I say... incorrect.
Whats wrong with DVD being upscaled? Its DVD. Thats whats wrong. This is HD, not SD. This is how I feel, and obviously not how you feel. Some like jam, some like peanut butter.... its a preference.
Sorry but that argument is REALLY REALLY bad on your part. Uncompressed PCM sound is far better than most regular surround tracks on DVD or HD DVD and Blu-ray, the ability to have this is great for home theater. Plus sound is the other half of the movie, without it.... well your missing half the show.
HD DVD has a lot more than Transformers and the Bourne series going for it. You should know that, and if you don't know what movies are exclusive to either format then you shouldn't be arguing about it. Both are future investments, both formats are going to co-exist for at least another 20 months.. probably more. The deal with Paramount is for 18 months! And both are going to exist after that deal is over... and certainly during. Thats a while, to enjoy exclusive HD content from both sides of the war. If you love movies, and if you love HD, then there is only 1 true option. Get both. Perhaps you think HD DVD only has "4 movies" to watch, but I have far more than that.... about 70 on HD DVD and about 80 on Blu-ray. There is lots to watch. And that list will grow to about 200 by Christmas.
You follow your "rules" from PS2, and I'll follow mine. When the PS2 came out, it was my first DVD player, for about 2 months until I got myself a top of the line Sony DVD player. I bought about 6 movies a week for months and months on end... into the 100's. I love movies, and I love Entertainment and big TVs and surround sound, and HD, etc. etc. etc. This is why I have both formats. And why I cannot blame anyone for wanting both.
The reason why I'm so happy about the top quality upscaling player the XA2 is, is because there are so many SD DVDs that I own that are not going to be on HD for a long time, or ever.
You don't know the half of it man. When I move out of here and after I'm done school in a few years, I'm going to get a house with my girlfriend of many years, and we are going to get one around 2 major things.... a study for her, and a basement suitable to remodel and build into a full fledged Home Theater, with a bar, seats, proper lighting, 200" screen, 11.2 Surround sound, etc. etc. etc. You better believe it. And then something in the next room like a 7.1 surround sound set up with a 80" HDTV with my PS3 (or PS4 by then) hooked up to it.. Hell yes. Going to happen, just gotta get there.

gah I knew I was using the wrong word here
sorry but I haven't slept for some time so I knew I wasn't typing very well
didn't realize it was that bad
I need sleep
but what I guess I was trying is that topics like these are overkill cause I'm not much for dual formats that offer the same thing ( I lived in a time where my old man bought Laser Disc and DVD so imagine my joy when not surprisingly... Laser Disc died)
but if that's your preference then I guess go for it
again no sleep makes this squirrel not so Solid
I'm Mental_Squirrel right now
sorry for the f*ck up lol
