They take rate of change in all of these occurances over the past years and use those to predict future or in this case current trends.
I wonder how accurate this is.

What's scariest is that the births outspeed the deaths by about two times, there needs to be more done to control population or there won't be any room left before long.

Let's hope so... first we have to find a place suitable for living on, which could take a while... then invent a massive-capacity spaceship that can transport people to wherever this planet is - which'll be a fair distance and will need some kind of super-fuel which we don't have.
