To all the Xbox 360 owners on this forum who don't have an HDTV, what is the console like? For anyone who has played it on both HD and ordinary, is there a lot, and I mean a lot, of difference, or just a little bit?

360 without HD

You can see some difference between 720p (HD) and 480i (Standard TV's).
But in terms of graphics, they are very marginal, meaning that the graphics in game will still look the same.

360 Insider has a very good article that compares the xbox 360 in Hi-def(720p) and SDTV(480p). The screens give you a basic idea but are not the best examples out there of the two.

12-30-2005 #4Dude, 480p isn't SDTV, 480p is EDTV. Plus they are both progressive scan so you wouldn't be able to tell the difference at all. They need an article comparing 1080i and 720p though.

On the standard TV are the graphics noticably better than the first Xbox would you say? Is it worth paying a lot of money for an HDTV just to play the Xbox 360/PS3?

There's a big difference between 720p and 480p. You'll notice a much sharper picture and more details.

As for 720p vs. 480p there is a huge difference. 720p contains 720 vertical pixels and 1,280 horizontal pixels with a widescreen aspect ratio of 16:9 while 480p has only 480 lines, usually with a horizontal resolution of 640 pixels and an aspect ratio of 4:3. This all gives you a much superior picture on the 720p set over the 480p set regardless of the fact that they are both progressive scan.
As for 1080i vs. 720p, 1080i may show more detail than 720p for a still shot but is not as good with fast moving content as 720p. A good article about this is Here.

Psh, I hate that article, the guy just like disses on 480i and 1080i. Oh well, I still like 1080i because of the mass of details, but i have never really seen any tearing at all.

all i can add to this is i am playing my 360 on a standard tv 28 inch widescreen and it looks beautiful, on some games u lose some minor details, like Amazing looking grass on Madden or Tiger woods, but the games still look phenominal
Dont worry if your hesitating to get one, it will look mint i promise you that!WII FRIEND CODE = 5509 0447 7406 7959

Thanks everyone, I think I will get a 360 and then either get an HDTV or a very good standard TV after I have bought the console

I have a RPTV that's a few years old so it doesn't support 720p.
I have read that images in motion don't look as good on 1080i as on 720p. While this may be true I watch lots of sports and action movies(HD movies over cable) and they look awesome.
For practical everyday purposes I don't think the untrained eye is going to notice much of a difference, if any at all, between 1080i and 720p.
Also, of course games look better without the HD. It's not like we all got brand new tv's when we went from PS's to PS2's.
on a side note PsychoMantis, I dont' think the standard xbox360 comes with the hi def hookups. If so you'll need those to view the games in HD.
