I picked the game up as a birthday present to myself (with checks from other people), and I popped it in tonight. I gotta say, the graphics are pretty awesome, and everything looks really nice.
But just starting out (first time I've every played any Monster Hunter game), seems pretty tough. I did most of the training missions, and they seemed pretty easy. But now that I went out, it got really hard. Even just doing a one star mission (getting the monster you hunted in the training missions) is a ton harder than the training missions.
The controls seem kind of whack too. There isn't any target assist, and if you are a tiny bit off when you aim your attack (or the guy moves, which happens a lot) then you miss. It gets pretty frustrating when you are trying to hit these people, and you keep missing because they went behind you. There isn't a lock on, or anything. So you just keep swinging, all the while getting your butt whooped. Maybe I just don't get it? I don't know.. But I'm pretty frustrated with it right now. I hope there is more to it than the 8 areas that you start out with. I'm sure there are, but it still kinda sucks.
I'll try it some more tomorrow, but so far not so good.
I must say though, that the quirky Japanese style is there, which I get a kick out of.

welcoming to hunting and a more realistic type of game .... this is probably one of the best games ive ever played .. i also had the first one on PSP
the first 5-6 hours of playing are real tough in this game .. i promise though if you stick with it and learn how to play the game you will love it ... there is just so much crammed into this game ...Anything worth doing , has probably already been done by someone else !

As GoodIntentions said, you definatly need to play it for a while, you will get used to attacking properly and everything.
Also get rolling down by using the joystick + X it should help you not get your butt kicked so much

Welcome to the world of monster hunter, first of all I would like to give you some advice on what words to practice
First: ****ING TAIL!!!
Second: AHHHHHHHH JUST DIE!!!
Third: AHHHHH ****ING TAIL (in rage mode)
Fourth: OH THAT SO MISSED ME!!!
I would be happy to give you some advice with targeting but need to know your weapon of choice, mine is the hammer though I wouldn't suggest that for people just starting out in a MH gameif I am in the PS3 or 360 section I will NOT post about the competitor just to please people, if you want to know what I think about the competitor link me to a thread in the appropriate section

as a starting weapon i really think the sword and shield would be best .. probably the best weapon to use to learn the combos and when/how to dodge /roll outta the way also it allows you to block if you should not be able to get outta the way quick enough .. i used the SnS thru the entire first game .. and nwo have switched to the Long sword .. with a bit of hte bow .. although i tried out a hunting horn recently and have to say i really like it ...
remember too early on GATHER EVERYTHING ..... you will need the money early on from selling it all ..Anything worth doing , has probably already been done by someone else !

I'm using the sword and shield right now... I played it some more today (it was my first time last night), and at least I actually finished a quest. Of course, it was only a gathering quest, but at least I got on the right track. I equipped the cold protection stuff, so that way I don't have to worry about Hot Drinks, and I've been keeping my stamina up by eating meat, so that way I don't run out in a fight. That seemed to help a lot, and I've been doing a lot more dodging (having that extra stamina helps a lot), and I'm doing better in the fights.
I took on four of the Giaprey, and took them fairly easily, so I think I'm starting
to get the hang of it. It kinda weirds me out how you can't go out and get stuff on your own, you have to do it through quests.
I must say, I like the inclusion of surround sound support. I've had my PSP hooked up to my Pro Logic receiver, and it's sounding pretty good on it. The thunderous steps of the large herbivores fading in the distance is pretty cool.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

It's good to see you're learning well, I know of some people who have spent weeks trying to figure the basics out though I may give you some advice since you have been practicing with sword and shield and that advice is MASTER blocking, sure it may seem like a better idea to simply avoid the damage by dodging but when you get to some of the larger creatures you have a large chance of still getting hit but if you block the hit the enemy may pass right over you and you can nail it from behind while it recovers
Still dodge ofcourse but it's best to learn all there is to know about blocking soon because it is just so valuable some times, as a hammerer I have no block and **** it hurts sometimesif I am in the PS3 or 360 section I will NOT post about the competitor just to please people, if you want to know what I think about the competitor link me to a thread in the appropriate section

To put it short: Monster Hunter Freedom 2 is the very best game out there that has been released for the PSP so far!
Itīs unbelievably fun to go out hunting with a fully equipped four man team.
You guys should go and get yourself the Wifi Max as well as Xlink Kai.
Online this game is a beast!

well as you play you will unlock hte pokke farm which will allow you to gather most of hte more important items you need .. once you get ot accertain parto f htegame yoiu will find you really only need a few items on a regular basis ... most of hte rest you only need to craft weapons and armor .... and yeah blocking is good BUT it decreases your stamina faster if you use it TOO much ... plus you still take some damage from some of the bigger attacks blocking them ..Anything worth doing , has probably already been done by someone else !

I have now logged well over 100 hours into this game. And I only had it for over two weeks. Yes it is that addicting. This was my first monster hunter game, and yes the learning curve is very steep. But the controls becomes second nature. And when a certain monster kicks your arse for the 7th time, once you learn its attack it becomes second nature as well.
The progression in this game is simply amazing. I love how you can completely destory a boss, face a new one and get your arse handed to you. Each weapon has their strenth and weakness as well. All i know is, because of this game, all my other games are taking a back seat...I am even playing it as we speak. Slow day at work, sooooo PSP time

So how exactly does one get more HP and stamina? I haven't gotten to level 2 in the guild yet. I figured it might go up with that, but who knows? I'm sure some of you do.
I just upgraded my sword up one level, and that helped a little bit.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

you dont gain more HP or stamina as in a RPG or anything ... theres items you use that boost your stamina and health .. the stamina is only temp. though and has do be done again over time .. health boosts can come in the form of armor skills or from food in the felyne kitchen ...

Ah, okay. I'll be sure to look into that more when I get the chance. I just found my first armor sphere in the farm, and I made some better armor, so I should take a little less damage.

dont concentrate too much on building up defense .. the real key to this game is learning to not get hit .... thus why the school training always has you with very low defense ... ive seen vids of people doing naked runs ... hunting without any armor on at all ..

I tried using the dual blades yesterday... I think I liked them a lot. I definitely don't like the big slow weapons though. I like being able to move quickly, even if it means doing a bit less damage.

the long sword is my weapon of choice this go around .. has close to the amount of damage as a great sword but moves a heck of a lot of faster .. plus you can get quite a long combo going when combined with a full spirit gauge ...

I take it that it works for Freedom 2 as well?
How does it work? Does it pretty much just take an ad-hoc game and turn it into an infrastructure game?[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]

yeah bawsically it uses your computers online to piggy back thru ... i dont do it but there seems to be a rather large following .. and it isnt just for this game .. theres a lot of other games people do it for ...

Yes exactly this was one of my favorite franchises on the ps2. I had tons of fun playing it online with people were its ment to be played. Its better to play it with 4 ohter people so it wont be so tough. But i dont noe why capcom is dumb enough to only have Add-hocc and no infracture mode ? kinda dumb i think, but the 2nd best thing to do is what he said and buy the wifi max and dl the xlink kai its so u can play games online
