    cell vs. G80?

    Did not see this posted.

Interesting to say the least. Cell bests a 8800gtx at ray-tracing.

It's not surprising at all since GPU's are naturally very inefficient at ray tracing due to it's random nature on memory calls and works against it's prediction systems entirely.

It's cool to see Cell doing well at such a task but it is comparing these chips in a completely wrong way.

So, if you take a Ray tracing program that was written specifically for Cell (Cell iRT Ray Tracer) and try to run it on a PC GPU, it doesn't work as well as it does on Cell?

I don't know about you, but I'm stunned. Any chance that the program being written and optimized specifically for Cell may have influenced the results?

All the tech comparisons are well and good. What I'm waiting for is what comes in the next 5 years or so for PCs and consoles. I'm a little older than some of you folks. When I was starting school TRS 80 computers with the black and white screen and a massive 16kb of memory were cutting edge. And I walked uphill to and from school, it was either 100 + degrees or 12' of snow, I had to spend most of the lunch break working to earn what I got to eat, truant officers shot on sight, etc....

Yes, iRT was optimized for Cell. But so was saarland Ray-Tracer specifically optimized for G80. sRT exlpoits todays GPGPUs immense FP power to Ray-trace scenes using Stackless KD-Tree Traversal technique. Results are very promising as G80 literally crushes Quad Core Intel processors.

But the thing is.. no matter how optimized sRT was for G80 it did not held a candle compared to IBMs iRT for Cell.

There are kinds of things that GPUs outdo CPUs at -- and vice versa.

    Nothing new here.

To make a long story short, a GPU can do more than just drawing pixels; someone did a test using one for a more mathematical rendering system, and found that it didn't do as well as Cell.

You can read the headline as "McDonalds sells more hamburgers per year than KFC", and get the gist of it pretty closely.

The new hybrid GPU's from intel (Larrabee) will blow away cell and all current GPU's at ray-tracing without taking a such a toll on the CPU.

That would be natural. If Larrabee (release 2009/2010) can't outperform Cell (released 2004/2005) then intel is 90% surely going to be out of business or in need of beowulf class reorganization in R&D department. I wonder how Cell2 (release 2010) performs against Larrabee...

Why are we focusing on ray-tracing people? All the Cell could render was a small, very badly textured rabbit.

Ray-tracing won't become a standard in video gaming for a very long time.

How is intel going to be out of businness? Larrabee has the best chance of making it into the mainstream market. So it doesn't really matter how Cell2 performs at ray-tracing except for specialized markets.

Re above were does it say they ran CELL iRT Ray Tracer on the G80
    NOWHERE is the answer.!!!!!!!!!
