Well not at the moment at least!! I was reading this article on IGN and I was very surprised! I loved the short films, not a big fan of the game, but the short films were very sweet! I would think with the popularity of the game this movie would be a no brainer....guess not! Is it because its Universal and Fox?

Resident Evil and Silent hill had a certain depth of storyline (mystery) which could be drawn upon to make somewhat of a movie (not that they managed to pull off good plots based on RE).
Halo can really only translate itself visually: i.e. you'll see the Halo, you'll see the Elites etc. But there just isn't any story there worth filming. On the contrary, MC's lifestory (which is entirely novel-based) is about 50x more interesting than the story of Halo proper, from a Dramatic point of view...
I guess this opinion of mine just reflects my growing impression of genres and entertainment: I am seriously beginning to wish Hollywood would just stop making big budget action movies, since they invariably suck, and their plots always make more sense as video games. That genre should just be given to the videogame industry where the spectator is the action star.

This is old news.
Fox and Universal pulled out over a year ago. Peter Jackson (producer) and the director Van Kampf? Are still proceeding as they've acquired more funding.
From what I've heard its actually slated for this summer or next i think(?)

^There is a movie worthy story in halo beyond Humans Vs aliens+Giant ring world. A lot of people who play the game dont even understand the full story and the hints that are dropped in the most unlikely spots(Level names, terminals, certain lines of dialogue).
I think the one thing that gives Halo a chance to be a good live action movie versus other video game movies is that the master chief never takes his helmet off. You dont have to find someone who looks and/or sounds like the character. Keep his helmet on and have the guy from the game do the voice. Like darth vader.
Oh and Peter jackson is doing those episodic interactive movie things that were announced at X06. its supposed to be a trilogy and is coming out in Q4 2008.

Halo has an incredibly deep story.
Again if you read the terminals in H3 it only further elaborates on its mysterious past and only serves to further illustrate the Brilliance of the Halo plot.
If they could incorporate this into a movie, without making it another "Doom" or "Resident Evil" then they have a GOLD MINE.
The problem is, as I see it, getting somebody to help put the movie together considering Fox and Universal backed out...
The third biggest contender (Ironically) is Sony I think. (as they own a multitude of studious)... But I seriously doubt they're going to want to have anything to do with a Halo movie. Even if they did, Microsoft would never allow it.
I hope the movie gets made though.

From what i heard, they are doing a movie based off the game. What i think will be a LOT better however, would be to base the movie off the novels, which is actually a great read. Almost finished ghosts of onyx.

I'm kinda glad the idea has been dropped. It would be hyped beyond the stars and would more than likely dissapoint so much for being terrible. Even with Peter Jackson behind it. Infact what's that gonna mean? An epic bloodbath, a mixture of brain dead and LOTR, in space; rubbish essentially. While in theory Halo is actually a good candidate for a decent blockbuster film I don't think a studio would 'get it', rather like the Judge Dredd film or Doom.
They should do a film about the life of the grunts in Halo, it would be rather like Gremlins or Critters. Get Emilio Estevez to direct, provided we can somehow revert him into 80's mold and it'd be classic material.
Oh please. Hyperbole beyond belief. For someone that quotes a classic poet in thier sig I would have thought you'd have known better.Halo has an incredibly deep story.
I've played through the first 2 Halo's, and there's no semblance of an 'incredibly deep storyline', nor even a deep story. It's a workman like sci-fi at best with a bit of supporting mythology. Good to very good for a FPS story (especially a console one), decent for a gaming story, but anything special or deep no way. It's no P.K. **** or Herbert of the Sci Fi world that's for sure, more like Farscape or Star Gate. It's like Poe vs. Lil' Wayne in poetic depth.
I don't wanna sound like an elitist story driven prick or anything because I have nothing against games or films that have simple stories, no story at all or even pretenciously epic sci fi stories a la Halo as long as it fits the mold and lifts the game, I enjoy everything for what it is rahter than what it isn't. But I don't enjoy people painting things to be so much "better" than they really are.
Anyhoo...

the annoying thing about halo is that the story does go pretty deep, but hardly any of it is actually in the games. its in the story bible that bungie has hidden away somewhere, and in the books.
its pretty disappointing that allot of it doesn't make it into the games.

Good.
Movies based on games are more often than not rubbish.
It's just like games based on movies are usually not very good.
Movies and games do not make good bedfellows. Period.

Silent Hill? That was one of the worst movies I have ever seen.

I enjoyed RE as well. I liked the first a lot more than the second though. The third was closer to the first one. The second had over the top action scenes that made it seem silly if anything.
Silent Hill was pretty good.
Now Doom on the other hand. They should have never changed the story. It was better originally. They cut the concept of Hell out of a doom movie. How that can be allowed to happen.
Any movie from Uwe Boll blows. Bloodrayne and House of the dead are perfect examples and have almost single handedly killed the video game to movie franchise.

They never found a movie studio. I think that was the problem with the movie. They could not find a studio they wanted.
Now theres no way theyll make a movie unfortunately. Halo 3 was such a huge success that theres no way anyone would want to share that kind of money.

dont make a movie, write more books or make prequels, no movie. dont ruin the franchise.

That halo has a deep BACK story is unquestionable: they have been selling tons of books to explain what the game doesn't even try. The point is that it is very hard to make a coherent movie of the Halo game, unless you want to bring in tons of flashbacks etc based on the books and finally have about 15 min of the actual titular Halo.
So no, Halo doesn't have a good story for a movie, since its drama occurs in backstory, not the actual action drama unfolding before your eyes. You would get 1h30 min of fighting on Halo with no dramatic attachment to any of the characters. You NEED their backstories for that: we need to know that Maser Chief John 117 was kidnapped and enhanced and saw his mates die around him while he survived.
Actually, unless they can pull off the equivalent of "Elephant Man" acting in an action movie, that could end up being as terrible as lacking his backstory, you would now have absolutely NO emotional attachment to the main character, not even on a "I can relate to your facial expressions" level.
Replace "expansive" for "incredibly deep" and "achievement" for brilliance and we'll be on talking terms, lol.
Again, see my above comments as for why Halo would make a poor movie adaptation. Just because it works in one medium (books) doesn't mean it will work for others (i.e. video-games and movies).
He's means the books. If you Wiki halo's storyline, you'll get a decent briefing on what its about. I agree with you though, it's hardly any better than most franchise writing, and certainly doesn't stand up to any decent non-franchise Sci-fi novel out there.
Wow wow wow.
The Halo games have a terrible story (no character development/conflict or drama, except perhaps for the arbiter subplot) mixed in with amazing gameplay.
The fact that novels have been written to fill in the blanks hardly qualifies it as "novel quality" across all mediums. Having recently perused one of them, I can assure you that it barely qualifies past corporate writing, let alone literary novel.
All it means is they actually had to write books to explain the story because it is probably too big to do otherwise, either in a 8-15 hour game or a 2 1/2 hour movie. That's not that different from the hundred of other video games that have franchised into novels (although halo having not only a bigger fan base, but a quasi-religious one that will buy what they produce, it means they can develop that aspect of the franchise more than others).
The reason I disagree about Halo making a good movie is that they couldn't do a good job of exposing the plot, motivations of characters and historical context in the actual games, which share the expository model of movies: i.e. you need to SHOW things, not just mention them. You can't afford the HUGE context that novels afford and that Halo needs (since its story is novel based more than anything). That means endless flashbacks and forwards, that means uneven pace of plot, etc etc to try and even do the story honor. What's more likely to happen is they will reduce the hell out of the story to the point where it is unrecognizable as Halo, or so close to the game storyline that the movie will win Turd of the Year (there's no gameplay to save the bad story in a movie). It means big stinking Hollywood B-movie. Worst part is they won't actually have to put any effort into it, because they know the fans will buy it regardless.
