Although reviews are best taken with apinch of salt it would be important to know that the average gamer has rated this game as a 7.5, muvh higher then the reviews and shows the core gamer does enjoy games not popular with mainstream gamer sites.

Once again, Idea Factory, Compile Heart, and NIS America get it done through quality localization, a finely tuned array of systems, endearing characters, a wicked cool OST, and the seemingly unending power of the 2D spriteling.

In the end, I can’t recommend Cross Edge to everyone, but I can recommend it to people who like deep RPGs and don’t mind a little bit of camp with their story.

Cross Edge is a mesh of great ideas, tons of fan service, and a few snags that keep it from being the masterpiece it should have been.

From dialogue that loads one line at a time to the lack of PS3-level graphics (high-res static art aside), everything seems like a remnant from the early 2000s. [July 2009, p.77]

Turn-based sections can become cumbersome, but platform-centric dungeons are a fun diversion. However, this game's true weakness lies in its feeble story and overextended roster of characters.

Ah Cross Edge how I wanted to love thee, it’s too bad the clunky menus, overused traditional storytelling and mediocre fighting system wouldn’t let me.

Worth Playing
Overall, I was mostly disappointed with Cross Edge, and while the hardcore fans of the series involved will be willing to give this one a try regardless of the content, I wouldn't advise it to the more casual RPG crowd. The battle system is pretty inventive and fun, but everything that surrounds it is a total chore.

Video Game Talk
Cross Edge features a brilliant combat system and the character roster is like a dream come true for many J-RPG fans. Sadly the rest of the game stinks.
Hands On Preview
Spoiler:
Quote:
Characters from across the gaming multiverse come together.
US, April 7, 2009 - If there's one thing I can tell you from my limited time with the turned-based Cross Edge, it's this: it's extremely complicated. That's not a bad thing, but after approximately two hours of play, I still have no idea what's happening. But I suppose that's to be expected from a game that borrows heroes and villains from franchises across the Japanese gaming landscape -- including characters from the minds of NIS, Gust, Idea Factory, Namco Bandai and Capcom. These reputable companies came together to create a "dream RPG" that acts as a massive dose of fan service for PS3 owners. Even though my experience with the game is sparse, I'm already intrigued to see where things are going and I'm eager to master the game's neat, albeit confusing, battle system.
Cross Edge is a traditional Japanese role-playing game complete with world map, random battles, level grinding, item synthesis and talking anime portraits. The real charm of Cross Edge comes from the fact that so many different characters unite in a single story. The start of Cross Edge is unquestionably surreal. Main character, Miko, begins by delivering a monologue where she muses about what happens when your thoughts are immediately forgotten. Where do they go? What do they do? That's what the "world" of Cross Edge is all about -- it's a place where a person's lost thoughts and a collection of forgotten ideas go when they disappear.
This battle system runs on power generated from all of Japan.
Once the intro cinematic is over, it's on to the next scene, where the young, gun-wielder, York, regains consciousness in the middle of a strange grassy field with Miko by his side. They're friends apparently, and after some playful banter, York and Miko head off to explore their odd new environment. Before they can decide what to do, however, a small pack of wolves comes bounding up behind York and attacks him. Queue your first battle!
The battle system in Cross Edge is, like its characters, a mish-mash of elements from familiar "wait and attack" RPGs. Characters and enemies each claim their own half of the screen, while both groups work inside a grid that serves as their "movement cap" for that turn. Once it's your turn to fight, players can use each face button to execute a different skill and, like Fallout 3, you can do as many attacks as possible as long as you have enough Action Points to spend. During this string of attacks, you can switch to the next guy with R1 or L1 and keep up the beating. In this way, it feels somewhat like the obscure PS2 RPG Ar Tonelico. Speaking of the Ar Tonelico series, characters from the first Ar Tonelico are present in the roster. How convenient.
What makes the Cross Edge battle system interesting is the potential for combination attacks. If you execute certain skills in a specific order, you can activate a special "chain attack" that does more damage to your assorted wolf enemies. Looking at the Arcane Tome, which is an encyclopedia of these combination attacks, there are more than 100 combos to discover. That's a lot of combinations to figure out.
As you've probably surmised, Cross Edge is an extremely complicated game. There are more gauges, diagrams and numbers on screen then there are stars in the sky (on a clear night, no less). With enough time, I'm sure players will be able to decipher the various sub-systems included in Cross Edge's combat, but all I know right now is that if you can chain enough attacks together you can break an enemy's guard and score an overkill which nets you some rare items.
New costumes for the win.
After the first battle is complete, another pack of wolves rushes in -- perhaps to avenge their fallen comrades. York and Miko prepare for the clash but Morrigan from Darkstalkers comes in to save the day. The three characters decide to set off and explore the world together. There's safety in numbers, after all. Following a few more dialogue scenes, the three companions meet up with Marie from another obscure but sharply-named role-playing game, Atelier Marie, and an original character to Cross Edge, May.
May is a little girl that can sense wandering Souls and send them away from this dreamy world. Apparently, "bad guys" (her words, not mine) are going around and sapping energy from these wandering Souls that rightfully belong to other worlds. As with many other JRPGs, the story is very cryptic at the beginning but hopefully things will clear up down the line.
I've just barely scratched the surface of Cross Edge, but I'm excited to keep playing. Sure, the game uses low-res sprites but they're animated well and you'll be able to collect new costumes for all the characters which change their appearance and portrait. It should keep folks busy for awhile.
Now, if you'll excuse me, it's time for me to continue analyzing a battle system that's more complicated than a fusion reactor's design schematic.

Yeah, I'm really loving the art, alot like disgaea but expanded, i know alot of people may not like it but can really get my teeth into these kinda games. The difficulty doesnt put me off, kinda increases the want to play it. Hope E.U gets it, otherwise will need get a U.S copy. Would be nice see a PAL copy though, and NIS did release Disgaea 3
So many features is X Edge that i love, world map \o/ finally it returns :P. random battles <3, and item synthesis . Wonder if we can hope for lvl9999 to
if this is relatively successful, NISA should localize Agarest Senki and Agarest Senki ZERO...they share a lot of the same battle system aspects and what not so it would be an easy transition for people who've played Cross Edge.

I'd take Agarest Senki ZERO, however, I am not sure how NISA could handle the localization. I thought they only localized games that NIS handled in Japan, or are they actually able to approach other games without the aproval of NIS?

Ar Tonelico 2 is Gust/Banpresto(now NBGI), but NISA localized AT2, so they do localize games outside NIS product line.

Thanks there Forbidden,
Id also like to see Agarest zenki and zero, i can always dream . Wish alot of games could even be released like the few titles in asian copies where its english. I dont mind importing if it saves costs of localisation.
NISA are also punlishing some sega games so they could do pretty much anything. There was some bad blood between them and Idea Factory for a bit though, but I guess that must be resolved by now I'd certainly love to pick up the Agarest games is they released them
Added a few vids for anyone interested, probably seen em before, although you catch bits and pieces of some of the world map, status screens and so on as well as battles and so on.
I just noticed that this box art doesn't have the "PlayStation Network" part at the top next to the "Only on PlayStation" logo. So I expect the boxart to get changed, although not in terms of design, but in terms of the addition of that part up top, given that games with Trophies(which this game has) have had that little part of the banner up top.
the preview didn't mention loadtime issues so looks like you guys are getting Cross Edge with the patch...first 2-3 weeks, we had to wait 5~15sec per load sometimes until a patch was released

Yeah I actually noticed the load times in a few videos, I wasnt sure if it was the way the videos were made or if it were the load times. In some parts it was like, whats the delay .Would be great if that was fixed. It wouldnt really bother me but i can see it could really put people off who just want get moving fast. I find most previews usually just talk about the good stuff, although i probably absolutely wrong here, i find the criticism comes in the review, i find the preview usually tries hype the games, which is good.
Edit: What really gripes me though is i would give anythin for these types of games to be a success . I mean i know they have never been fantastic success, It would be nice to have just enough to warrant a look of "hey, lets release some more". Though perhaps it already has if NIS is looking to release this and already released Disgaea3. Does anyone know or have rough idea of what the publishers consider in sales a success for rpgs
DblEdit: Just wondered if anyone thought should turn this into the offical thread, an add more previews/reviews when available. Or should just let it full to the abyss of the forums.

There isnt any other official thread afaik so why not? ^^
I'd totally buy another Cross Edge if they got a few more RPG teams involved, especially sega
The great thing about Cross Edge is, anyone who has played any of the games in the crossover will probably be able to deal with the highly complex battle system
if this is relatively successful, NISA should localize Agarest Senki and Agarest Senki ZERO...they share a lot of the same battle system aspects and what not so it would be an easy transition for people who've played Cross Edge.
Yeah, I think that's definitely a possibility to see AS 0 localized. The first one is probably a lost cause though, I can't see it happening this late.
Even the H-scenes are only in-line with AT, right?
Considering they're releasing Sakura Taisen 5 that came out in 2005? I dont think it's too late at all
Wait... did Sakura Taisen 5 come out that long ago? Well, then I'd have to say that they're more likely to just localize the newer game and be done with it. Unless they've already started on AS1.
They sound really great to be honest. NIS, atleast someone is trying to get these games across.
Found this so thought id upload it. I know the term, dont believer everything you read, but the localisation of the titles there doing shows there not just words

For me, this game will make or break NISA. One mistake for Ar Tonelico 2 is bad enough (Rhapsody isn't that important to me), but to do it again will make me stop buying their games. I'll forgive them though if they do a good job on this one (up to par with AT1).

It won't break or make NISA for me. They've localized too many good titles in the past for me to completely ignore them in the future. Disgaeas, Phantom Brave, and Mana Khemia were pure win, and that wins me over any day.
