someone is going to get hit in the head with a real bat lol.

edit: you don't swing the real bat you just scan it into the game then use the controller to swing it.

so you can use your real gun in a shooting game

is that a Light Saber? yep that's a Light Saber.

Edit:

Remember the people accidentally throwing their Wii-motes into their TV's.

I wonder how long it will be before someone fires a 9mm round into their TV after scanning it in and then trying to use it as the remote instead of the controller with the glowing ball.

And yes, it will end up happening as some idiot won't get the concept and try to use the gun as the controller and that same idiot will have it loaded with a round in the chamber.

You know, this kind of looks like a, "hey, let's stop MS from putting random real objects in their games with Natal" kind of a patent to me.

Geez, so I don't read patents often. All I saw was the June 18, 2009 date. There's no reason to roll your eyes.

it's just that people like to say Sony is doing this and that because of so and so!

when it was sony that was doing it in the 1st place, they just take their time and try to do it the best way they can before coming out with the product.

like people are quick to say that the wand is a ripoff of the wiimote, but there is a video of Dr. Richard Marks showing the prototype of the wand back in the PS2 days with the EyeToy.

The cup demo used colour recognition, I think you'll see the cups with the wands.

The more I think about it the more those wands seem fantastic.

So does that strange U-shaped bar thing represent the wand or something? This really doesn't seem to be an object-scanning thing like some of you are suggesting. It's just about the virtual representation of objects being controlled by your U-bar or wand or whatever. Look at the topmost image, on the left it says "REAL-WORLD" and on the right it says "IN-GAME". There is nothing suggesting that the virtual objects have been scanned in by the user.

Sony's been doing amazing things with video and the Eye cameras for years but no one every gives it the time of day.

That's PS2 tech there.

SUMMARY

[0007]In one embodiment, a computer-implemented method to interactively capture and utilize a three-dimensional object as a controlling device for a computer system is disclosed. One operation of the method is capturing depth data of the three-dimensional object. In another operation, the depth data of the three-dimensional object undergoes processing to create geometric defining parameters for the three-dimensional object. The method can also include defining correlations between particular actions performed with the three-dimensional object and particular actions to be performed by the computer system. The method also includes an operation to save the geometric defining parameters of the three-dimensional object to a recognized object database. In another operation, the correlations between particular actions performed with the three-dimensional object and particular actions to be performed by the computer system in response to recognizing the particular actions are also saved to the recognized object database.

[0008]In another embodiment, a computer-implemented method is disclosed to interactively capture and utilize a three-dimensional object to be a controlling device for a computer system. The method includes an operation for identifying the three-dimensional object. To identify the three-dimensional object, there are operations for capturing depth data of the three-dimensional object and processing captured depth data of the three-dimensional object to create geometric defining parameters for the three-dimensional object. There are also operations for defining correlations between particular actions performed with the three-dimensional object and particular actions to be performed by the computer system. Additionally, there are also operations for saving the geometric defining parameters of the three-dimensional object and correlations between particular actions performed with the three-dimensional object and particular actions to be performed by the computer system to a recognized object database. The method also includes operations for presenting the three-dimensional object to a camera and moving the presented three-dimensional object in front of the camera so as to trigger one or more of the particular actions to be performed by the computer system.

[0009]In yet another embodiment, a system for using a three-dimensional object as a controlling device when interfacing with a computer system is disclosed. The system includes a camera interfaced with the computer system that is configured to capture data from a three-dimensional space. Also include in the system is storage that is linked to the computer system. The system can also include a display that can be coupled to the computer system. The display can be configured to display a plurality of graphical display screens to enable set-up of a capture session to obtain geometric parameters of an object. The capture session can also be used to assign actions to be performed with the object when moved in front of the camera during an interactive session. During the interactive session, the geometric parameters and the assigned actions can be saved to a database for access on the storage linked to the computer system. Wherein the assigned actions can be custom defined by a user for particular movements made by the user on the object when holding the object in front of the camera.
it's more to it than what you see in the picture.

or even 2007 when they filed for the other patent just like this

when it was sony that was doing it in the 1st place, they just take their time and try to do it the best way they can before coming out with the product.

like people are quick to say that the wand is a ripoff of the wiimote, but there is a video of Dr. Richard Marks showing the prototype of the wand back in the PS2 days with the EyeToy.

epicness +rep to ONQ.

This is actually pretty damn cool. If all of this comes together, it will bring a new side to gameplay.

i think the whole idea of drawing a tank and using that as your vehicle is pretty epic, i remember seeing that video well over a year ago.

I think this is what some of that patent is talking about.
