Speaking during a conference call with investors today, Ubisoft’s Yves Guillemot refused to divulge a possible release date for Assassin’s Creed 2, but confirmed the company is indeed “working hard on the product."
In related news, Giantbomb revealed that during the taping of Geoff Keighley's Bonus Round with Kotaku's Michael McWhertor and Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter, Ubisoft is planning on changing the time frame of Assassin's Creed 2.
According to Patcher, Ubisoft said that they are moving from 1191 A.D. to “several hundred years in the future” or more specifically, “sometime in the 1700s.” It's speculated that the sequel with have Altair running around during the French Revolution, as that's a time period that has not been over explored by videogames, much like the Crusades era.
Either way, it's great to know that the game is coming along. Let's hope it's not too long before Ubisoft reels back the curtain on this highly anticipated sequel.
UPDATE:
According to VG247, a Ubisoft representative has replied to the rumor stating, "this is only a rumor and we would prefer not to comment on rumors."

Great news! Big fan of the first one. I hope we hear more information in December.

the first was awesome (although a little repetitive) but i honestly believe that they'll change the timeframe, and it won't be Altair you play as but another person in Desmonds ancestry. this would leave the series open to the third chapter (the game was touted as a trilogy at the beginning) where you play as Desmond.
Just my thoughts of course...

great news, i really liked the first one. it did get a little repetetive but it was a very original game. i like to hear that they are putting it in another time frame. the crusades was really cool to play in.

Assassin's Creed was NOT a let down. Yes it was repetitive but think about this: If you are an assassin you will be gathering as much information on your target as you can EVERY SINGLE TIME, unless you want to get dead fast.

@ 10
does that make the game interesting? no
would have prefered something like a shop to buy blackmarket weapons etc, and clothing like disguises
