Nintendo: "PS3 is like an SUV; Wii like a Hybrid"

Nintendo's George Harrison was recently interviewed by Fool.com, and when asked about how much of a threat he felt the PS3 and the XBox 360 posed to Nintendo, he replied with a car metaphor.
"Consider three 30-something suburbanites," he began. Two people could be out buying rims for their SUVs, while another shops online to compare products for his hybrid. All three are car improvements, but their interests don't necessarily overlap. That is how Nintendo sees the video game business right now, he concluded; "two companies are going one direction, and we're headed another".
Many people have speculated about how many of Nintendo's sales have gone to first time gamers, or light gamers who only use their console sparingly and often for very few purposes and games. Nintendo continues to insist that it is primarily bringing new customers into the market because of their different approach to gaming, while critics often point to the low attatch ratio and apathetic customer base as signs that the Wii is a fad that will pass in the future.
Still, the car metaphor paints a pretty clear picture of how Nintendo sees themselves. Two competitors clunking along in cumbersome machines polishing their wheels, while Nintendo is simply trying to get the best mileage they can.

That actually makes sense when you think about. I would buy a Wii if there were more than one game I wanted to play for it.

Hes right, the PS3 IS an SUV. It cost more (The price of an SUV vs Hybrid), the games (Gas) cost more then the Wii and in California, Gas Guzzler Tax which would be say oh...HDMI cables and other accesories :) I dont want to hear anymore Wii bashing, just want release dates on games :)

yea makes sense only morons buy hybrids because they don't relise hybrids arn't any more fuel effiecent or enviromentally friendly than regular cars. Just like stupid people buy a wii becuase they think it will offer better gameplay. as ps3 being an SUV, can an SUV play blu ray games at 1080p play your music, movies, surf the internet run linux AND help find cures for cancer.... I don't think so.

It might be a fad. Kinda like how Hybrids cars are a fad right now. They are good and cost efficient, but onestly most people I know who have them, dont know anything about them other than it was the "cool" thing to do right now. Offcourse though Hybrid cars are one fad that wont go away. Maybe thats not the same... or is for the Wii... hum Dosent matter, I just wish a PS3 and Wii hooked up and we had a lil PSiiii in 10 years.

@ tabular. Good. I'm glad the PS3 is bigger than the Wii. Its supposed. Because its bigger and better. The way I look at is. The Wii is a cheeseburger and the PS3 is a steak.

It's true though, they are bringing in more gamers with they're lower price and game titles appealing to a younger crowd. If anything they are molding PS4 and XBOX720 owners,so more power to them
@random1448 bet you'll get more girls in a SUV though

Molding PS4 and Xbox 3 owners? Perhaps, but it is also getting people into the PS3 and Xbox 360 as well. I know people who didnt play video games at all. They got hooked on the Wii, then they tried out the PS3 and now like it too. The Wii is good for everybody...including Sony. -

TO me the Wii is the tiger handheld of the game market right now. I own one and out side of zelda, I haven't touched it. I have pretty much decided its going to be the party machine. However, No more heros looks pretty cool.

hey nintendo what direction is that exactly? tell us, where are you giong with making a weak console that attracts "light gamers"? getting new people? i don't want "new people" because the more people who are into something, the more retarded it gets. thats true of everything, and if EVERYBODY likes it, it must be dumbed down to fit EVERYONE's needs and wants. so your direction sucks.

Here's the way I see it: The Wii is a video game console that attracts "light gamers" and non-gamers. Nintendo are obviously hoping to expand the video game market, and I give them thanks for that. However, most of the people who are buying and want a Wii are the light- and non-gamers. How long do you think they'll play their Wii for on a regular basis? Very few have been playing regularly since launch; is that the kind of success Nintendo wants? I can guarantee most PS3 owners play their PS3 daily; and that number exceeds the number of Wii owners who play their Wii daily. To me the Wii is just another fad that will eventually fade. It's already starting to happen in Japan with its recent decline in sales since June 2007. Going from six-to-one in June, four-to-one in July and three-to-one in August (Wii-vs-PS3 monthly sales in Japan), the Wii is already starting to die out in Japan. Whereas PS3 sales have been steadily increasing since the $100 price cut in July.
