Crystal Dynamics feels PSN is "more flexible" than XBL

The Lead Designer on Crystal Dynamic’s Tomb Raider: Anniversary, Riley Cooper, has said that he feels PlayStation Network may provide companies the most effective outlet for delivering online content, suggesting that Sony’s service offers a more “flexible” approach than Microsoft’s Xbox Live.
Cooper was speaking in light of releasing Tomb Raider: Anniversary as a digital download to Xbox 360 owners via Xbox Live, where users are able to download the title – also available on PlayStation 2 and Wii – in episodic chunks.
"I'm very, very interested in digital distribution and the potential it has," said Cooper, during an interview with Gamesindustry.biz. "PlayStation Network is extremely interesting because it's a more flexible space."
"We made an in-road with Anniversary on 360, and it was a full game essentially, but Microsoft is only slowly increasing requirements and opening up the constraints of Xbox Live”, he added.
“It's been a slow process, whereas PSN hasn't been restricted by size, they've just done Warhawk for example.”
The company's next instalment in the Tomb Raider series, Underworld, is currently in development and expected to be released for PS3, PC and Xbox 360 some time in 2008.

I agree with chelseapaul - I've always been a TR fan (I even enjoyed AoD), and I loved Anniversary... but Uncharted out-Tomb Raider's Tomb Raider!
I've no doubt I will buy the next TR game regardless, but it's going to have improve big time to compete with Uncharted.

psn id: gingo... more and more developers are giving sony praise for its more flexible and open psn compared to the rigid boundaries set by microsoft on xbl so maybe this is a good sign for the future where companies can do things on psn that couldn't be done on xbl, UT3 has already started a hopefully great trend

So why didn't they release Aniversary in full on the PSN instead of releasing it in episode content on live? They would have made more money on PSN as with live they would sell the first episode much cheaper and many people not necessarily would buy episode two.

Uncharted sucks. No originality. Uncharted is nothing but a Tomb Raider rip off game anyway. I cant wait for an actual real Tomb Raider game. Which is what we will be getting later this year.

To be open ended does have its faults in that Sony can not always oversee what is being put in and seeing that its only of the highest quality for PSN users. With that said, More developers need the freedom PSN offers over LIve due to the fact its the best bet they can essentially catchup and compare to live in the coming year when the AAA titles are finally released for the PS3.

Nucleus you numbskull Sony has the exact same strict quality standards as Microsoft do with XBL. The developer was talking about the fact that XBL limits the size of downloads for games to a very paltry amount. The PSN has set no limits. Really I do wander about the intelligence of the general gaming public. Perhaps some of you should stop playing games and get an education!!!

@bluesuedeshoes
Actually M$ has more restrictions. For example, they dont allow user made mods where as Sony, ie UT3 does. The fact of the matter is that Sony is more open then M$. They do have some of the same standards (to guard against hacks and viruses) but at the end of the day, PSN has a better online service. -

@Punisher99
Most games are inspired by other games (not rip-offs, improvements). There are many unique aspects to Uncharted... apparently you haven't played through the whole game before making a judgment.
@bluesuedeshoes
This isn't the first developer to say Sony has a better setup for developers, and he wasn't talking about file size. It was Mark Rein talking about how Sony is open to user-created content and has far fewer restrictions than 360. Mark was even quoted as saying that Unreal Tournament may not have a life on 360 depending on Microsoft's reaction to user-created content.

@Xdeth
I'm not sure the UTIII mods are downloaded via the PSN are they? But even if they are they'll go through the exact same debugging process as all other PSN downloads which DO go through very rigorous stages of quality control.
@French
Mark Rein was in my home town of Birmingham UK recently and I had a good little chat with the man (5 to 10 mins tops) just before he nipped off with an interview with a UK mag called Edge at a Lan Cafe. Trust me when I say that UTIII will 100% be heading to 360 as he said they were working on it now for a early to mid 2008 release. Also User created content isn't the problem with XBL apparently that everyone thinks it is. Its that Microsoft want to charge for everything downloaded from live in some way. Its the payment method and who gets the money thats the issue, the modder (nope), Epic Games (Nope) or Microsoft (yes apparently).

@Xdeth
Thats my point, the user created mods do not come via the PSN store so its not that the PSN is flexible but the PS3 itself. We'll eventually download UTIII mods via the PS3's browser. The major problem with XBL is the size restriction on game downloads etc. and most companies will tell you this. Also the fact that people don't want decent new content on live and seem to prefer dodgey old zx spectrum games is also a bit of a downer for people creating new IP's for XBL whereas games like Flow, Calling All Cars have found a willing market in the PSN. Live isn't as great as Microsoft claim it is.
