Sony Corporation has announced that it sold approximately 9.24 million PlayStation 3 consoles in the financial year ended March 31, further adding that it plans to sell 10 million during the upcoming 2008 business year.
This brings the total number of PS3s sold globally since launch to 12.85 million, with the Xbox 360 currently at 19 million and the Wii at 24.45 million.
The company also revealed that it sold a total of 15 million PlayStation Portable units, although it neglected to reveal its current sales forecast for the handheld device.
Elsewhere, the platform holder is also expected to sell 17 million liquid crystal TVs for the fiscal year ending March 2009, up from the previous year ended March 31 2008, where the firm sold 10.6 million.
Mizuho Securities analyst, Koichi Hariya, commented: “The forecast for 450 billion yen in operating profit this financial year looks solid, given that there’s been speculation the yen’s rise and slower U.S. growth could have a negative impact.”
“The results could lead to bullish sentiment on Sony shares."

why does everyone seem so surprised at these statements? I never doubted for a second that the PS3 would be any thing other than successfull. the playstation brand has the largest console following in the world bar none and now with the new machine including a Blu Ray player its appealing to those that are after a standalone high def machine. Its going to sell! And yes maybe its price at the moment is prohibiting sales to certain people, but then the PS2 was £299 when it first came out so over time and numerous price drops the PS3 will become even more accesible.

I love how XBOX fans always say they outselling us sooo bad, with these numbers if the XBOX and PS3 launched at the same time we would be so far ahead now. I say we will be far in the lead by early to mid 09, with metal gear, FF, and home I dont think MS wil be able to hold their position for much longer.

PS3 sales are rocketing, the Wii is slowing up, and the 360 is going down!

well, vgcharts might be considered a no no here, but the ps3 market share has been whittling away at the competition. while monitoring it on said site, around september/october the ps3 market share was at about 17.**-18.**% (cant remember exact) but as of now, it is 22% over there. decent rise. i blame the good games and cold weather...

Wow, so the 360 hasn't cracked the 20 million number, even with a 1 year lead amazing! M$ published a news byte that they are the first console to get to 10 million in the US and that "historically that has shown it wins you the console war for a generation." LOL! Grasping at straws aren't we? So it means 10 in the US and 9 million elsewhere. With the PS3 heavy hitters coming the future looks grim for M$.
