Home definitely coming in 2008; will remain free

Speaking to IGN.com, PlayStation Home producer Martijn Van der Meulen reiterated the company’s commitment to releasing the online service by the end of this year, and confirmed "there are no plans to charge for Home, even in the far future."
"First and foremost, Van der Meulen told me (without hesitation) that it is a 100 percent guarantee that Home will be released by the end of this calendar year," wrote IGN's Ryan Clements.
"Van der Meulen also assured me, quite adamantly, that Home will always be a free service -- only premium content will need to be purchased."
Other details that were revealed in IGN's home update included talk of gamer apartment space and unlockables. According to Van der Meulen, players will have access to the free Harbor view studio at first and then larger/better spaces will be made available to acquire in the future.
Also, trophies won't be the only unlockables for PlayStation Home. Players will be able to unlock items such as t-shirts and other knickknacks by completing certain tasks through external games. For example, players who beat Dark Sector might be able to unlock Hayden's metal arm as an apparel item for their Home avatar.

Thats what I thought also. Oh well t least its 100% guaranteed it'll be out by the end of this year. That's gotta mean something right guys.

Home Beta is up to version 0.98, so I would expect the 1.0 release to be Martijn Van der Meulen's "100% guarantee" that it will be released this year. If I'm right, then that's just 0.02 iterations away.
Home looks to be interesting, but I'm still very skeptical. I doubt I'll use it, after seeing a friend who is in the closed beta use it, it pretty much sucks as it stands right now.

@11 Might be more interesting when everybody is using it. I'm not sure if Sony use the convention of odd and even version numbering (odd numbers are usually dev snapshots and evens are more formal releases), if that is the case then there is hope that we'll see it sooner rather than later. Probably on 0.99 in the source repos already, just holding back to get the system rolled out.

This gaming console (or whatever you want to call it) is one of the most amazing entertainment tech toys ever. If not the bes. I kno it's doing well, but why aren't more people on top of it? I know people that HAVE a PS3 that STILL don't know al that it does...

See. This is the kind of crap that gets me upset with Sony. How come M$ already announce a date for their 360 fall update? 360 fans are set for a November release date. Us? We don't even know. To make matters worse. PS Home have been in productions longer then the new 360 update. That's a damn shame!

what is with these articles being so late? i read about this on IGN like 4 days ago.
on the subject tho, like #1 said, i'l believe it when i see it. this "guarantee" bs is getting really old. to me, its turned into "the boy who cried wolf." They've lead us on soo long and keep dissappointing, i've quit keeping track of this pittiful service...
