Resistance 2 info ironed out; expanded

When Resistance 2 was announced earlier this month, a bounty of overwhelming info clogged every nook and cranny of the internet. Amidst the 60 player multiplayer, the separate campaigns, an eight player cooperative mode, and so on, some details simply became downright befuddled. We're here to clear that up for you.

First off, a rough version of the single player mode is already done. Yeah, we're impressed also. Just off the heels of the magnificent Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, Insomniac has already completed the structural outline of all the levels for Nathan Hale's America-bound adventure. All that's lacking is some tuning and polish before it can be considered complete.

Remember the procedurally generated levels that were mentioned when the bulk of information came out regarding Resistance 2? That was somewhat exaggerated; it only applies to the coop mode. Even then though, while the diversity, variety and set-up of the levels will change, they won't be truly procedurally generated.

Another nugget of information released was regarding the “freaking awesome” eight player coop online mode. This is the only mode with confirmed player classes, as it isn't yet known if these soldier classes will be implemented in the competitive online multiplayer. Anyways, the online coop is apparently coming along quite nicely, as the team at Insomniac is cramming it to the brim with features prior to polishing up the visuals.

As for graphics, expect the game to look ages beyond the original. Texture streaming, advanced shaders and normal mapping will be implemented in such a way that Resistance 2 won't only be pretty from afar like the original.

Lastly, the Game Informer article which contained the exclusive reveal for the game misled us regarding the new enemy, the Chameleon. Screens in the article displayed merely the newly designed stalker, not the implied Chameleon. The Chameleon will be a living creature that stalks its prey - vague, but enticing. More for you on this incredible-looking title soon.

Which one to pick Haze, KZ2 or this? I think all three are gonna be dope and possible Halo killers.

I read the whole Gameinformer article, and they hinted on fighting Goliath's again, Chimera have flying spave ships take over San Franciso (according to some art work). Also I'm not surprised about seeing Resistance 2 this early, they're using some really good software for the games they make

    @Stickemup

Halo doesn't need a killer. It's an over-hyped game, nothing needs to kill it. If we're talking about how good a game is, then COD4 and UT3 have already killed it. If we're talking about sales numbers, it's going to be awhile before the PS3 pulls over more software sales on a single Exclusive than Halo 3. Possible Gran Turismo 5, when the PS3 has a massive fan base. Those games have always sold well.

As for the article.......In my opinion, Resistance only looked good up close. I couldn't see any detail from afar. I could barely see the chimera if they weren't a few yards from me, they looked like a tiny dot. This is what made the online suck for me. Never got into it. Looks like Resistance 2 is going to smooth this out, and is going to be one helI of a game.

One question. resistance one 32 player online, resistence 2 60 player online - why in the heck are we still playing cod4 with 12 and the like? why is resistence the only game on the planet that will give us the awsomeness of so many people playing at one time?

Wow, I can't believe they're so far along already.  Does this mean it'll be out early 2009?  Late 2008?  I can't wait to get this.  Insomniac has done a great deal to make the purchase of a PS3 at launch and throughout 2007 justifiable, and I'm going to definitely reward their efforts with a blind buy when this is released.

I was talking about texture detail mainly - it looked good from afar but fell apart when you got close to something.

its funny how people say this is better than Killzone 2. It's not, its all just new info with big #'s (online) and some modes. I still think KZ2 will make you forget about Resistance 2. Once new Kz2 screens, gameplay vids, info comes out... its hype will be much greater than Resistance 2 b/c we've been anticipated this game for 3 years(since 2005). I'm probably going to buy this game, but to add. Resistance 40-player online was a bit boring to be honest, look at COD4 with 16 and it owns. I hope insomniac makes online fun.

this is def not a killzone 2 killer. right now.. nothing is in my opinion. but resistance 1 was a halo 3 killer in my book, so this game should be awesome!

Insomniac and Naughty Dog are THE PS3 devs at the moment, in my book. All other devs should be looking to them for inspiration and guidance as to what the system is truly capable of, before giving us half-assed ports. And if they can't do something at least as good, they really shouldn't bother.

@Cleptomaniac: We play COD4 becouse its better then Resistance, it doesn't matter if 40 or 12 people are in a game. It just comes down to how the good gameplay experience is online.

Nice, another hit in the making!! Now what are they going to do to pull away some of the COD4 players after this hits. Its going to be a wierd transition back to R:FOM isn't it?

The ps3 has been out for just over a year and Insomniac are already developing there third ps3 title.  I think Insomniac deserve a very long holiday after the release of the release.

yup anyways kz2 is on its own level, btw seen the new ea game tiberium or something some people think its gonna beat kz2, kz2 is on its own level of detail and all that is now needed is a demo of awesome gameplay then im sold, i think that insomaniac has almost as big team as guer~ games but it took them less time b/c of the 2 previous releases and that they learned lot from it. so i think insomaniac is past guer~ games but they are still not going to kill kz2 b/c of the time it took to develop

the problem with killzone is that if it ever gets as much hype and media attention as halo, jack thompson will have a field day.

just imagine all the tv presenters talking about the launch of "KILzone 2"

    • 6:37am GMT - January 19th, 2008

You can't really compare COD and RFOM 1. One is a luanch game, and it was amazing for what it was. I see RFOM2 being better than killzone 2 because of the production qualityies of insomniac. They are able to put out top notch games in a fraction of the timeof other people and they understand the hardware from sony. Even the first ratchet and clank for the PS2 years ago was running at 60 fps and had better graphics than most games on that system to this day. I do think that killzone will be awesome as well and I will get both games.

How does a game all of a sudden get branded a 'Halo-killer' anyway? Does it have to get higher scores on gaming websites? Seriously, who cares what nerds on the internet who review games think? If you like one FPS over Halo, that's good enough in and of itself, it is a Halo killer to you, and to heck with what other people think about it (there will never be a shortage of Halo-loving nerds who enjoy fighting goofy Pokemon-lookalike creatures with goofy looking weapons).
